McCarthy Appointment Reportedly Close
Monday, 29th Oct 2012 23:09

Town are close to naming former Wolves, Republic of Ireland, Sunderland and Millwall boss Mick McCarthy as their new manager, according to national newspaper reports. The 53-year-old and ex-Charlton and West Ham boss Alan Curbishley have always been viewed as the frontrunners to succeed Paul Jewell since the Liverpudlian’s exit by mutual consent last week.

If confirmed, McCarthy is expected to be joined at Portman Road by his former Wolves assistant Terry Connor with former Blues skipper Matt Holland, who played for the one-time centre-half with Ireland, believed to be another prospective member of the Barnsley-born boss’s staff.

A three-year deal is understood to be on the table for McCarthy, who has been out of work since leaving Wolves in February after more than five years at Molineux.

In the summer he spoke to Nottingham Forest about their vacancy prior to Sean O’Driscoll’s appointment, while more recently he has been linked with the likes of Bolton, Burnley, Blackburn and Crystal Palace.

Town chief executive Simon Clegg said last week that he was hoping to have the new appointment in place before Saturday's game at Birmingham City.

I agree, Wolves were not exactly a long ball team, they would get it wide to Jarvis he would use trickery and pace and the same with likes of Hunt and Kightly. He signed players such as O'Hara and Milijas who are also very good ball players, besides the biggest area we need strengthening is perhaps our defence and I would trust Mick to get some decent defenders on board. Those who are unhappy need a dose of reality, its a results buisness and we're not getting them, that has the potential to change with Mick.

Great news he won't take no sh£t - they need more than a rocket up there arse - would be a fantastic appointment if they can pull this off just the type of person we need at the helm

My first choice, if true I think he could be a fine appointment.

Great appointment, would do us the world of good! People saying his style of football is not good, that is rubbish! Remember the story when they played Chelsea off the park and John Terry walked into their changing rooms after the game to say how well they played and how unlucky they were to lose it.

Buzzing for this!

All this talk of McCarthy's teams being route-one hoofers is massively overplayed. His style of football is direct but can be quite exciting to watch.

I'd take any improvement over the current dross.

I feel it's the wrong manager at the right time. He's what we need although he's likely to upset the football purists. Ultimately fans prefer a 1-0 ugly win to a 6-1 defeat with neat triangular passing. As Wellens (and Supple) implied, we need passion but have a senior squad who play for their pay cheque. McCarthy seems to be the best option to shake things up and motivate the players we have. He also has the contacts to attract players into key positions.

As with any manager I'll support him. I said a couple of days ago my head 'says' he's the right choice even if my heart looks elsewhere. Then again I'm always a bit like this an haven't been excited by a managerial appointment since Burley.

Not sure he is the right man long term but now it is of ultra-importance that whoever is given the reigns has the full support of the fans... and the players!

He'll need to bring a big old broom with him to sweep out the cobwebs and start acquiring some playing staff with big hearts and small egos.

A few never-were's need to be shown the door for their woeful display of undercommitment and their lack of respect for the shirt.

Let's hope that this time ME and Cleggy stumble haplessly upon the answer to our prayers and that the good times return to our wonderful club.

All the best... whoever you are!

I'm surprised. If you look at the recent reports he turned down Bolton and Forrest because they were not in the Prem... could it be that he is being motivated by being the one to turn round the club Roy ruined?

Completely agree with Marcus. Not my first choice and it looks like for the third time in a row, we're going for someone who has taken a team up to the Prem and them failed. My preferred route would be someone who has taken a team up and stayed up with improving fortunes over more than one season or someone who is succeeding with a lower league team and aspires to headier heights. Saying all of that, MM will at least bang heads together and we all know that we have a team crammed full of heads that needs a good seeing to. Egos need to be put firmly in the back seat rather than the driving seat. Good luck to you sir

This has cheered me up no end. I hope it leads to galvanising of the team who will be able to understand their roles on the pitch in training and whilst tweeting! The club and us as fans have suffered enough huliliation with success north of the border and rubbish on the Portman Road turf. I look forward to the new era......... assuming he comes!!! LOL
Welcome to Ipswich just a hint go and take the wife house hunting to Bury St Edmunds far better than Ipswich!

This has to be the correct short-term move. Whether MM has the ability to take the club forward in the longer to medium term is open to question, but I think he has the credentials to at least hold his own and better in this league. Agree with KernewekBlue; that dressing room appears to need sorting out. Whoever takes charge needs to establish who are the nucleus he wishes to build his team around. Interesting times ahead, that's for sure!

I've always liked Big Macs, sorry about that but had to get the joke in. Like many on here he would not have been my first choice, but better than having Curbs.

If true, it is as good appointment as we could hope for. He has twice got sides promoted to the Prem, has played at all levels of the game and takes no cr@p from players. He also had a famous bust up with Roy Keane, which is irrelevant to how he might perform as Town manager, but still makes me chuckle a decade later!

In all honesty i've got no idea what to think any more but Wellen's is right, we're a soft touch and we have been for a long time and that stems from what we put out on the field to the support from the stands and the ethos of the club by large.

You have to give any manager respect com,ing into this job as it's a disgusting mess at the moment so anyone coming here is clearly up for the challenge and can luckily see the ailing potential.

For me, Mick can get this bunch playing and he knows he can otherwise he wouldn't take the role. Chopra, JET and Edwards are a disgrace so here's hoping big Mick ives them the ultimatum straight up.

In my opinion he needs to let 2 or 3 of the loanees go straight away and bring one or two in unfortunately. We're so poor in certain areas it beggars belief! Still no right back, still no target man, still no competition for left back...

All the georgie Mick. Here's hoping you get backing rather than mindless divided loyalty.

I think he is the man to sort a few players out, might seem dull, but i bet he will kick off behind the scene, just what a few of our players need, a massive kick up the arse..
I hope he signs.
Sign and keep us up first and foremost , then , maybe, just maybe

I can't imagine this working. Maybe it will, I just can't picture him in charge of ipswich. But we'll see.

Desperate times call for desperate measures and this is desperate! I think Mick can do a job in keeping town up, which at the moment is what were all interested in and is the priority.

I just wonder how long it will take for the moaners to start about the style of play. I just hope he's allowed to shake the club up top to bottom. And I can't see him being messed around by Mr Clegg, which is a major plus.

Just saying that a deal was on the table not long ago from the new owners of Notts Forrest and Mc Carthy turned that down because he wanted Premier League football, so lets see!

mawwam if you check I think you'll find Curbishley has a better record as a manager that Mc Carthy and 16 years at the same club shows loyalty, so don't dismiss him out of hand. I personally think he is mre 'Ipswich' for the long term but shall support McCarthy 100 per cent if he gets the job.....both good candidates in my humble opinion.

I like McCarthy. He always tells it as it is. His teams may not play much beautiful football, but he usually gets the best from limited resources. I like Coonor too - seems a humble, honest sort of chap. And Holland is a great mix of intelligence and passion, and should work well with the players. Could be a good team.

I meant 'Connor' obviously. Very unfortunate typo.

Look out the premerdonnas and attitude players who feel theyare doing everyone a favour just turning up. Big Mick is a manager who will not stand for it and who can attract a much better quality player to portman road than our last 3 managers so be in no dought that at present none of you are anything other than expendable. Please we need this to happen , dont blow it clegg & co.COYB

This is an appointment I'd be happy with, an experienced head but with a *recent* track record of promotion with Wolves unlike when we appointed Jewell and went on past glory. Mick wouldn't be my first choice, would rather Ian Holloway or Steve Coppell but I will 100% back McCarthy if this comes to fruition.

If he'd joined Coventry last year we would have all thought they had got a good man in considering their position. This year we are that team.
