McCarthy Set to Be Named New Town Boss
Tuesday, 30th Oct 2012 19:30

TWTD understands that Mick McCarthy will be confirmed as Town’s new manager in the next couple of days with his Wolves assistant Terry Connor and with former Blues skipper Matt Holland as part of his staff. McCarthy has been favourite to succeed Paul Jewell since he was reported to be in talks with Town at the end of last week.

The 53-year-old was sacked by Wolves after six years in charge in February. His assistant, one-time England U21 international Connor, took over for the remainder of the season but couldn’t prevent the Black Country club from dropping into the Championship.

Born in Barnsley, centre-half McCarthy played for his hometown club, Manchester City, Celtic, Lyon and Millwall as well as winning 57 caps and scoring two goals for the Republic of Ireland, the country of his father’s birth.

He began his management career with the Lions in 1992 before moving on to manage his former national side in 1996, a spell which saw his famous clash with ex-Blues boss Roy Keane at the 2002 World Cup.

A few months after that tournament — in which Holland was a regular in the Ireland midfield — McCarthy resigned, joining Sunderland as their boss in March 2003, taking the Black Cats into the Premier League in 2004/05. Having failed to keep them in the top flight the following season he was fired.

In July 2006 he took over at Wolves and led them into the Premier League as Championship winners in 2008/09 and kept them there until his exit in February.

Connor, 49, was a striker with Leeds, Brighton, Portsmouth, Swindon, Bristol City and Yeovil during his playing days.

After hanging up his boots, he coached at Swindon, Bristol Rovers and Bristol City before being taken to Wolves by John Ward in 1999.

In February he took over after McCarthy’s sacking, rejoining the backroom team under new boss StÃ¥le Solbakken. But four games into this season he left the club.

Holland, 38, needs no introduction to Town supporters having played at Portman Road between 1997 and 2003 during which time he skippered the side in the 2000 play-off final victory over Barnsley at Wembley.

Previously with West Ham and Bournemouth, Holland moved on to Charlton before retiring in 2009. More recently the Bury-born midfielder, who won 49 Ireland caps, scoring five times, has been working in the media and is the patron of the ITFC Charitable Trust.

Blues skipper Carlos Edwards previously played for McCarthy during a two-month spell on loan at Wolves in 2008, making five starts and one sub appearance.

Loanee Daryl Murphy was signed from his hometown club Waterford United during McCarthy's time as Sunderland boss, after he had had trials at Portman Road.

Coach Mark Kennedy previously worked with the new boss as a youngster at Millwall and for the Republic of Ireland.

Fingers crossed this happens. Like its been said before would of liked a young up and coming manager but because of where we are we need a strong, experienced leader to get out of this mess.

And to the people saying its going to be boring football...eh? For pretty much the last few seasons we've been hoofing it long a lot of the time, mostly to a striker who is about 2 feet shorter than the opposition defenders. I think at least we may have more variety and maybe he'll finally get in a 6ft+ striker who can get those long balls.

I'm looking forward to games again now. And to all those negative posters- at least give the new guy a chance! Seriously I'm not sure what you expect but get real. We are in a fight and need a battler. And MM certainly fits that description.

COYBs!

The right man under the circumstances who is passionate and can man manage. We're presently bottom so it's definitely not a popularity contest. Let's hope that if there is going to be an offer on the table that it will be a win/win situation for both parties.

If this appointment comes to fruition, I will be a very happy season ticket holder. A no nonsense Manager (former centre-back), backed by Connor. good coach and (former forward) and finally Matt Holland, a Town legend and (former midfielder)...now just need Andy Rhoades as goalkeeper coach telling his son to come back to the fold?

Does this mean loads of ageing ex Sunderland players! Seriously I am quite excited by this threesome. It will still take a lot of effort to turn this bunch of useless players into a team which can escape relagation. But if anyone can McCarthy can.

Expected to see 4-4-2 on Sat with Murphy up alongside DJ. Just need someone to put in some quality balls!

Brilliant (assuming it's true) - delighted - right here and right now he is EXACTLY what we need, esp with his nos. 2 and 3, so welcome to ITFC Mick, and a seriously huge welcome back to Matt! Now please sort out those in the dressing room who are disruptive wasters & build a team from the back cos let's face it, we've not had a flippin defence for years. Oh, and well done Messrs. Evans and Clegg for landing the spot on correct choice of manager (I think/hope/pray!)for the first time - we all know MM's a good one, fingers crossed he's a lucky one too - cos as someone once said, you also need a bit of that to be successful.

And well said adrianpaz, couldn't agree more re us fans and TWTD-ers reuniting :)

Some previous comments have said how McCarthy is comparable in ways to Keane in his approach and management style. Difference for me is that McCarthy is similar in a way but is far more proven in knowing what he's doing and talking about, whereas Keane we all know made some very poor decisions costing the club dearly.

I'm pleased if this happens. I was saying to friends today the one thing I feel i've lost as a supporter since Evans bought the club, is a lack of connection with the club. Little to no ex players involved at the club in the right places etc. But with Holland potentially being involved I couldn't be happier. Someone who knows what our expectations will be. Someone who can explain to the new boss how great this club can be when things go right, and equally that should he just show us a team that will give 100 percent effort all the time, we'll still be proud to be supporters of this Football Club, even in defeat.

COYB.

Best of luck Mick you´ll need it with the massive egos that most need putting in place. Only half the team give a flying fcuk and the oyher half will either run down thier contracts or return to their parent clubs after a loan period. Most of these journeymen dont care one way or the other about ITFC.
Give them whatfor Mick your not at PR to make friends just keep us up.
