McCarthy Set to Be Named New Town Boss
Tuesday, 30th Oct 2012 19:30

TWTD understands that Mick McCarthy will be confirmed as Town’s new manager in the next couple of days with his Wolves assistant Terry Connor and with former Blues skipper Matt Holland as part of his staff. McCarthy has been favourite to succeed Paul Jewell since he was reported to be in talks with Town at the end of last week.

The 53-year-old was sacked by Wolves after six years in charge in February. His assistant, one-time England U21 international Connor, took over for the remainder of the season but couldn’t prevent the Black Country club from dropping into the Championship.

Born in Barnsley, centre-half McCarthy played for his hometown club, Manchester City, Celtic, Lyon and Millwall as well as winning 57 caps and scoring two goals for the Republic of Ireland, the country of his father’s birth.

He began his management career with the Lions in 1992 before moving on to manage his former national side in 1996, a spell which saw his famous clash with ex-Blues boss Roy Keane at the 2002 World Cup.

A few months after that tournament — in which Holland was a regular in the Ireland midfield — McCarthy resigned, joining Sunderland as their boss in March 2003, taking the Black Cats into the Premier League in 2004/05. Having failed to keep them in the top flight the following season he was fired.

In July 2006 he took over at Wolves and led them into the Premier League as Championship winners in 2008/09 and kept them there until his exit in February.

Connor, 49, was a striker with Leeds, Brighton, Portsmouth, Swindon, Bristol City and Yeovil during his playing days.

After hanging up his boots, he coached at Swindon, Bristol Rovers and Bristol City before being taken to Wolves by John Ward in 1999.

In February he took over after McCarthy’s sacking, rejoining the backroom team under new boss StÃ¥le Solbakken. But four games into this season he left the club.

Holland, 38, needs no introduction to Town supporters having played at Portman Road between 1997 and 2003 during which time he skippered the side in the 2000 play-off final victory over Barnsley at Wembley.

Previously with West Ham and Bournemouth, Holland moved on to Charlton before retiring in 2009. More recently the Bury-born midfielder, who won 49 Ireland caps, scoring five times, has been working in the media and is the patron of the ITFC Charitable Trust.

Blues skipper Carlos Edwards previously played for McCarthy during a two-month spell on loan at Wolves in 2008, making five starts and one sub appearance.

Loanee Daryl Murphy was signed from his hometown club Waterford United during McCarthy's time as Sunderland boss, after he had had trials at Portman Road.

Coach Mark Kennedy previously worked with the new boss as a youngster at Millwall and for the Republic of Ireland.

So, if it's true, then it's a fait accompli. Bien fait. We fans owe it to the very essence of Ipswich Town to get behind MM and his team. I have been increasingly disappointed and upset by the negative, nasty, personal postings that have appeared on this forum over the last few months. We are now where we are. The Manager has been appointed. For goodness' sake - get behind the owner, management and most of all the players. This is now a matter of the very survival of our team. That is not a dramatic statement - it's a statement of fact. Get behind the team; pack Portman Road to the rafters; bring back the noise level for which we were once so celebrated; bring back Fortress Portman Road. We really have to fight for our survival - not just as a Championship team but an FA team. Come on - show what we Ipswich fans are capable of. Forget all the petty annoyances. Show the budgies up the road that we are on our way back to where we belong. GET BEHIND THE TEAM, BEHIND THE NEW MANAGEMENT. It's our club - it's our Ipswich. WE CAN DO IT!!!!! COYB

If true, I think that Clegg and Evans have done well- when thinking about what the club needs are McCarthy makes most sense. Winning football is more enjoyable than anything served up over the last 6-7 years at Portman Road
I Would have been enviuos of any other club had they got him - you always felt that he would get Wolves and SUnderland up lets hope he gets us challenging.

Brum away all of a sudden seems more interesting

I'm actually optimistic now. The first time for 5+ years.

We as fans must unite now behind this new team and give it 100% support. They need us as much as we need them. We're the 12th man. This is Fortress Portman Road. Come on you Blues.

I have criticised Clegg (yesterday I think) but if MM agrees to join then I think Clegg and of course ME deserve praise. MM has recently turned down Bolton and Forest and I assume he would not accept us if he did not respect Clegg or ME.
Whether or not MM is the right long term manager is possibly open for debate, but he is on paper a great appointment to get us out of he mess we are in. I don't think you can ask for more than that.
I think people who are already criticising are showing themselves to be more fond of their ego driven opinions than the club.

Hey Phil, please get rid of the ratings and just add a block feature. Ive had enough of these budgies in disguise. It wont take away from anything you've got going on here and we can focus on connecting with REAL itfc supporters.

Nice to see Holland involved, but I really hope this news report is going to be the same as all PJ's transfer targets that Clegg couldn't seal over the last two seasons!
Think I'd rather actually have Jewell back!!

MM is exactly what the club now needs.

He will come in and clear out the hangers on and panic loans.

I hope this happens, Matty H in the set up would be awesome too.

When he gets in the door his first job is to make Chambers club captain and line up the 'famous' five and stick ten bells into them and basically tell them 'tow the line or find the door'

Would love to be a fly on the wall when he does!!

Welcome Mick. Now sort out some of our so called town players. Kick them into touch if they dont want to play for town with pride & passion.

another average british coach wont change anything,we need to think outside the box and look to some overseas coaches with experience .we need someone who is a tactician and can win the game and change the game from the bench when the match calls for it.
why couldnt we look at someone like serge markarian who has won titles galore in south america ,coached national teams ,coached in europe and champions league and is a tactical genious ? or maybe a brazilian like paolo campos. what we have been doing hasnt been working thats why we are were we are,we need to do things differently, from our scouting to the youths teams.
we had a young 16 yr old trial with us last season who was cut because he was to skinny he has gone on to represent greece at under 17 level and uner 18 level and is also on australias national team radar.he was told we like our center backs built like tanks in this country, dont worry about the fact he had speed to burn ,could dribble and pass but hey he was to thin.thinking like that has to change.
we need a experienced foreign coach who can do things different and better than what our opposition is doing.
