McCarthy Still Looking For Signings
Friday, 16th Nov 2012 12:36

Manager Mick McCarthy says he’s still looking for further additions to his squad, having added Bradley Orr on loan from Blackburn and former Charlton left-back Kelly Youga on a short-term contract this week. Football League clubs are able to bring players in on so-called emergency loans until Thursday of next week.

McCarthy said: “I’m still looking. I don’t think we’ve got the strongest squad, hence taking Kelly Youga, who has been out for a long time to give me a bit of cover at left-back.

“I’ll keep looking. I’ve lost Richie Wellens for now, whether that happens again, I don’t know. If it doesn’t then, I’ll be looking for somebody else.”

He says he’s not sure whether midfielder Wellens — who could face the Blues for parent club Leicester tomorrow — will be back next week: “It remains to be seen. I can have a chat with Nigel Pearson up there tomorrow.”

The Blues boss says Wellens ideally wants to be playing for his parent club, something which he understands fully: “I think Richie wants to see if can get in the Leicester side first. I don’t blame him, it’s a long trek down when you’ve got a wife and young kids.

“We’d all want to play for the team where we’re living rather than being on loan, and he’s no different. I’ll get more of an idea tomorrow when I speak to them.”

McCarthy played down online rumours linking Arsenal’s Emmanuel Frimpong, whose loan return to Wolves broke down yesterday, apparently due to his lack of fitness as he recovers from his second cruciate knee ligament injury.

Asked whether there was anything in the links with Town, the Town manager said: “Nothing at all, except that I admire Manny.

“He’s a really a good player. He came to Wolves and was excellent and then he did his cruciate again at QPR.

“He’s a player that I really like,” he added, perhaps not ruling out a move for the 20-year-old at some point in the future.

As revealed by TWTD yesterday, Nathan Ellington is set to join League One Scunthorpe on a month’s loan and McCarthy confirmed that some players could move out of Portman Road for temporary spells before Thursday’s deadline: “Possibly. Just wait and see. I’m not going to be starting tempting fate, but there may be some going out.”

Early days in McCarthy's reign and his hands are fairly tied at the present time, but it is already interesting to see what he is doing to reshape and tinker with the squad he inherited. The early changes already appear to to positive and in line with supporters thoughts so that bodes well.

January will be the really interesting time when he can really launch the rebuild we all know we need.

Captain Beefheart "Trout Mask Replica" - a classic. Saw him live in Brighton 1973 (I think !)

He died a couple of years back if I'm not mistaken ?

Don't make them like him any more do they ?

Interesting. Will he be happy with the midfielder's he has, or will he get in a big centre forward??

Interesting. I'm not knocking MM, he's done a great job so far but it's a shame the position we have found ourselves in has forced such short-termism. As i said, not MM's fault at all, his priority has to be to get points on the board, and quickly, we cant afford to think about much else right now. It would be nice to get back to a position where we can afford to be favouring players like Whight, Hyam and Loach over loanees and quick fixes like Henderson, Youga and Reo-Coker who are essentially their direct competition.

Hopefully with a few more wins between now and Jan/Feb we can pull away from the relegation dog fight and start thinking futher ahead.

The good thing about MM announcements, of still being intrested in signings will enforce into the current squads minds that there is no place here at PR for non committed players and the desire for this club to get back to positive attitude, performances, etc on the pitch and in general conduct i personally support him and his staff 100% COYBsss!!!

As most have been saying on here, all the news coming out of PR is positive. I have not been so upbeat for years. Hopefully we will soon be out of this relegation mire and looking forward to next season. Having said that there is still a lot to do but hope springs eternal.

Yes Andrew the good Captain died a couple years back. He spent the last 20 years more interested in painting than music. His paintings now shift for huge sums of money. Hail to the Don.
