Town Move for Barnett
Monday, 19th Nov 2012 11:02

Town are understood to have agreed to sign Peterborough United striker Tyrone Barnett on loan. The 27-year-old, who TWTD revealed was a Blues target when with Crawley last January, is set to put pen to paper on a one-month deal having been transfer-listed by Posh last week after a breach of club discipline.

A number of Championship clubs, including Birmingham, Barnsley and Brighton, are also believed to have been interested in the frontman.

Barnett was a youth player with West Brom before dropping into non-league with Rushall Olympic, Telford, Willenhall Town and Hednesford. He broke into the Football League with Macclesfield in the summer of 2010.

After 13 goals in 50 starts and one sub appearance in his only season with the Silkmen, the 6ft 3in tall frontman moved on to Crawley for £150,000 the following summer.

Impressive displays for the Red Devils attracted plenty of interest with the likes of Fulham, Wigan and Stoke all reported to be keeping an eye before Christmas. Blackpool agreed a fee approaching £1 million before the deal broke down.

Barnett subsequently joined Posh, initially on loan, for a similar fee in February, signing a deal until 2015. He scored in the Blues' 3-2 victory over Peterborough at Portman Road last season as he netted 19 goals over the campaign, 15 of them for Crawley. This year he has scored just once in nine starts and one substitute appearance.

The striker, club captain Gaby Zakuani, Emile Sinclair and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing were all transfer-listed and fined last week after an incident outside a nightclub in Peterborough city centre in the early hours of last Sunday morning. Zakuani and Sinclair have subsequently been taken off the list and have had their fines rescinded.

The move for Barnett is unlikely to be a signal that QPR are planning to recall DJ Campbell with the Loftus Road club unlikely to get permission to draft an additional player into their 25-man Premier League squad despite Andy Johnson and Bobby Zamora suffering injuries.

Football League clubs are entitled to bring players in on loan until Thursday with manager Mick McCarthy indicating on Saturday that he might enter the market before the deadline.

Meanwhile, Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong has joined Charlton on loan for a month. Last week McCarthy dismissed claims that the Blues had made a move for the 20-year-old, who briefly played for him at Wolves.

I know theres negativity surrounding our club, the loan signings haven't delivered, but dont judge new players because of that, its a new person a new player so why be pessimistic. I heard Steve Evans say he was the best striker from League 1 or 2 when he was manager at Crawley and he went on a decent run for Posh not so long back. He brings a physial precence and pace which we dont have, we have Murphy who is physical and little else, DJ and Chops are goalscorers. Mick will make sure his attitude is right and that he doesnt show laziness and I'm sure will let him know whats required at this moment what with where we are at the moment. Only a month yes, but transfer listed, so if he impresses maybe we will snap him up, if he doesnt at least then January will soon be upon as and Mick can have a proper look around.

Another one right out of the blue! Personally I would have liked to have seen a defender come through the revolving door next but I will give Tyrone the benfit of the doubt till I have seen him play.

After Saturday I did wonder how many more games Henderson & Murphy would get in a Town shirt again under MM. I imagine one or both might get sent back this week unless there are clauses where we cant. I do also wonder where this leaves Chopra & Scotland now though? They both seem to be going further & further down the pecking order!

Heres hoping Tyrone comes in and starts banging a few in, I know the defence is leaking goals at the minute but our strikers are not exactly firing on all cylinders either so fingers crossed Tyrone & DJ can link up well and score a few much needed goals between them. COYB

Sounds not so much of a discipline problem - although why is he the only one of the three to be left on the transfer list? - as an attitude problem. Four non-league clubs before he got into league football at the age of 25. Everyone seems to unload him quickly.

Tyrone, Wednesday night is club night in Ipswich, bit of a change I know, but i'm sure you'll settle in just fine.

Time will tell on this one, hardly prolific, comes with a bad rep and is another very short term loan..................I could understand this if DJ was recalled, but seems a bit odd otherwise.

Some people on here have labelled him a bad guy...WHY? because he went out with his workmates and it got a little out of hand? Its not as though he broke the law is it, at worst he got pissed with his mates...at best broke a couple of club rules..big deal!!! Doesnt stop him being a good player. Posh seem to have resigned themselves to DIV one next season and are offloading the higher wage earners....fully expect to see the other transfer listed players go in january along with Boyd....Barnett can do a job for us...no doubt.

From a Posh fan.. he's apparently very poor - "Lazy and not up to Championship level (assessment made before his misdemeanours last week). Shame we can't insert a clause meaning you have to play him against us!"

that, following "... He's rubbish by the way. £1m worth of rubbish".

We have no real goalscorers at the club at the moment, plenty of crosses pinging in and nobody to put them away. OK this guys not Mother Teresa but he's worth a punt for a month before the transfer window to see if he's any good surely.....come on guys stop whinging and get behind the boys!!!!!!

Well sometimes it's said that defending can start with the strikers! Hence Tyrone he will hassle & harry alot more than Murph so i think it could work. MM hands are tied really until jan. Hopefully he can keep us in sight of safety till then. For anyone thinking he will step out of line under MM well they should have a word with judas keane. Agree with earlier posts Bye to Henderson & Moshni. Would like Wellens back. Proven at this level & has shown he cares.

We don't have to applaud every signing. Loads of comments on here before Saturday going over the top about Orr who then went on to have a stinker. The warning signs were there with Chopra (known gambling problems) and we didn't listen, Bullard and we didn't listen, Loach (not 1st choice and Watford fans pleased to see the back of him). I hate being negative and if DJ going back then Mick is right to get in an alternative. I also accept that in November there aren't many options available and saving grace is that it is only a loan. I know the minus stuff will come but it came even bigger when I stood by my guns over Jewell being the wrong man for the job and I was proved right. This guy might turn out to be a success but right now Mick needs another "problem child" like a whole in the head.

Well if DJ is recalled then fair enough...seems like a reasonable enough move although very short term in nature and if he makes an impression we might get him longer or on a permanent as long as he behaves himself off the pitch and on it come to that...Mick won't take any s*@t!!

IF true and he was fighting, at least he has fight in him !, some of the team havnt the fight in them to escape from a wet paper bag at present .Even in these dire times i dont think Mick would bring anyone in if they hadnt got something to add. Give Mick some credit and the player a chance . COYB

I agree dirtydingusmagee, I know this goes against the Ipswich image of being a 'Nice' and 'Decent' club but we need players with some guile and fight. Sign him and play him along side Moshni up front.
They would certainly worry oposition defences.

I'm presuming Paul Taylor would have had some input into this and if so, he should know

We need a whole new defence first.
You can't seriously play them players after the Leicester defeat.
send back Henderson, Higginbotham,Orr, Chambers? Cresswell?
ALL USELESS!!!

Personally not a 'Town' signing - and why are we lookin at players who are unprofessional off the pitch as hardly sets the standard for on it. Think he is definitely being signed to replace Campbell - shame as DJ has been the only one who looks likes like being able to find the net with any sort of regularity

Our main problem is that we keep bringing in mediocre loan players with no real loyalty to the club rather than organising our own players more effectively. Hoped this would end with MM coming in but seems to be continuing.

Frustrates me that managers bring in these loans and playing them without any real chance of team bonding. I've been told Orr was also shameful on Saturday? if this is true what do we honestly expect from a player who only arrived last week and given very little training with the team. We need a settled back 4 and players who want to play and show passion for the club if this means playing fit youngsters week in week out then so be it,

Bossman, good post. 95% onhere (me included) were applauding the signing of Orr & like the rest he had a stinker on Sat.

We do need pace, strength and height up front - Barnett has all three. However, I fear that this could be yet another 'trouble' signing for ITFC. Potential another clown to join up with the likes of Chopra & co. Ferguson can't get rid of him quick enough.

Not for me, thanks. As much as I would like to see the back of Murphy.

(let the minus signs begin)

I have seen Tyrone play at Crawley many times when he was down here and I have to say that he is an awesome signing! He's got it all in Pace, Power, Good in the air and really has the ability to frighten defenders. Beggars can't be choosers and as we have been saying for many seasons, we need players who are young, hungry and with a point to prove at a higher level. Much better than having that lump Murphy up front.

Whilst i welcome a new striker that is hungry to prove himself under Micks guidance, the question remains?
Just what the feck are we paying this gambling addict Chopra an obcene amount of money every week for? he has done nothing but cost our club extorntiate amounts of dosh since he arrived, special clinic,s, treatment at a health farm in Florida, etc etc, its about time he got his cheque book out, paid us back what he owes us and buggers off!

Orr was all at sea on Saturday but Edwards didnt help him alot as he was dragged into the middle too much by our inept Midfield duo
Orr will be ok , but I thought Chambers was ok vs Burnely as was Smith ( who I know was Jet lagged )
Wellens was a BIG MISS in Midfield
I think he will be back - so get rid of some of the others incl Murphy - waste of space
