Town Confirm Barnett Loan
Monday, 19th Nov 2012 15:50

Town have confirmed that Peterborough United striker Tyrone Barnett has joined the Blues on loan until January 19th. The 27-year-old, who will not be eligible to face his parent club at Portman Road on Saturday, had been transfer-listed by Posh after a breach of club discipline.

Barnett, who TWTD revealed was a Blues target when with Crawley last January, was a youth player with West Brom before dropping into non-league with Rushall Olympic, Telford, Willenhall Town and Hednesford. He broke into the Football League with Macclesfield in the summer of 2010.

After 13 goals in 50 starts and one sub appearance in his only season with the Silkmen, the 6ft 3in tall frontman moved on to Crawley for £150,000 the following summer.

Impressive displays for the Red Devils attracted plenty of interest with the likes of Fulham, Wigan and Stoke all reported to be keeping an eye before Christmas. Blackpool agreed a fee approaching £1 million before the deal broke down.

Barnett subsequently joined Posh, initially on loan, for a similar figure in February, signing a deal until 2015. He scored in the Blues' 3-2 victory over Peterborough at Portman Road last season as he netted 19 goals over the campaign, 15 of them for Crawley. This year he has scored just once in nine starts and one substitute appearance.

A week ago, the striker, club captain Gaby Zakuani, Emile Sinclair and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing were all transfer-listed and fined after an incident outside a nightclub in Peterborough city centre in the early hours of last Sunday morning. Zakuani and Sinclair have subsequently been taken off the list and have had their fines quashed.

The move for Barnett is unlikely to be a signal that QPR are planning to recall DJ Campbell with the Loftus Road club unlikely to get permission to draft an additional player into their 25-man Premier League squad despite Andy Johnson and Bobby Zamora suffering injuries.

A number of Championship clubs, including Birmingham, Barnsley and Brighton, were also believed to have been interested in signing the frontman.

The signing takes Town's loan total back to eight, six of those - Barnett, Stephen Henderson, Danny Higginbotham, DJ Campbell, Bilel Mohsni and Bradley Orr - domestic loanees with only five permitted in a matchday squad. The other two loans, Daryl Murphy from Celtic and St Etienne's Guirane N'Daw don't count as they are from clubs in 'foreign' associations.

I understand the frustrations of our fans, but the reality is he hasn't kicked a ball for us yet, genuinely believe he has potential to be decent for us because it is the type of player that has been missing for a while. Can't play Saturday but then its Forest at home which could be the perfect opportunity for him to impress and give the home fans something to be excited about.

any one will be better than Murphy IMO - and if TB is supposed to be quick , that will add much needed pace to the side.

But as far as Im concerned all this is MM treading water until the Jan window. The loan players we have may well find themselves on their bikes come the window - they have done little to impress but poor old Mick is stuck with them until Jan. So he adopts the carrot approach instead of the stick - wise man indeed he is !

town on the up/ where have you heard all these bad things then? let me guess, youve read posts on here today quoting boro supporters comments. the same kind of fans who were exaggerating our players night out not so long ago. in other words, people gossiping, nothing more. as others said om 1st story, my guess is they expect to be relegated this year & are clearing the top earners ready for that, thus the reason barnett still listed. besides that, i dont particularly care what hes done elsewhere. as long as he comes here & plays well for us thats all that matters. im certain if he waas to get out of line here that mm woyld deal with it. as for those people commenting on here without reading the story 1st? fatoby for instance. story clearly states that hes ineligible to play saturday.and radiohead, clearly states we have 8 loan players. what is the point of posting if you not read the story 1st?

Not a fan of loans BUT MM's hands are tied until January. He needed to act, beacuse the current 'squad' is woeful. Can only assume this is a view to a permanent deal.

Good player, but this breach of club rules is a concern; as we seem to have a number of players who do that already!

Hmm , well that is the end of Murphy as we know it, after Saturday anyway. The strange thing is Did anyone expect Orr to be any good , i didnt ,he is slow , no pace and new team mates ,means a shocker ,and thats what he has had. i HOPE mm HASNT CAUGHT THE PLAYFORD Rd Disease. ie there is a stray dog over there ,lets give him aa home.

Another loan, but hopefully a good one. Get rid of Henderson, and hopefully means Chopra is on his way in January. Free up some cash for MM to spend on who he wants.

Did you know our players were reportedly out on the lash in Ipswich on Saturday having turned in another fantastic display at Leicester!

Fully agree with NorseBlue. Let Moshni have a go at central defence. Does not matter who he replaces IMO as Higinbotham has flattered to deceive and Chambers is just plain awful. Welcome aboard Mr Barnett.

quite agree Cakeman. Moshni hasnt had much of a chance to show what he can do and we could do with some blood n guts and height in the defence

@50yearsablue

"Why don't some of you read the article before commenting? He can't play Saturday!! "

Sometimes an article is amended after comments have been posted. In this case the words "who will not be eligible to face his parent club at Portman Road on Saturday" were added after, and perhaps because, I posted "can he play on Saturday?".

The jury is out for me on this guy - ignoring his off field 'reported' issues his scoring rate at Peterborough doesn't seem great. We do need a proven goal scorer at this level and as people have said, hopefully will come in and earn a move to us in Jan. I also agree with giving Moshni a run in defence. Could he be worse than what we've got?

Again showing the state of the club. If you look at the bare facts, we have how many strikers on the books... Chops, Ellington, DJ, Murphy, Scotland, the new guy who's broke his foot (ok not his fault for the purposes of this post), the guy from Southend, then the lads in the reserves/youth setup (I've probably missed some too), but from my reckoning that makes easily 7-8 strikers on the books for MM to pick from. But here we are with another new face (loanee or otherwise), what does that say about A) the quality of our current players B) MM's faith in what we have.

There has to be some serious issues to say that from what we have in that position none of them are considered regular first team material or up for scoring goals even with some coaching/motivation from a new boss. Is the issue midfield aren't delivering or are the forwards that bad? Both, either, none of the above… Good luck to him, hope it works, for me just highlights the shambles we're in, hope MM can sort it out. I feel like a war veteran in the thick of it now, not even bothering to learn the replacements names because you know they'll be gone no sooner than they arrived.

Good luck mate, do a job, hope you knock some in, the boss seems to think you can so don't let him, us or the bunch of blokes loosely resembling a team down please. Hope you fit in and help us out. Fingers crossed… what a mess we're in hey!

Welcome aboard, another loan for Reject Utd

- Points here I come but surely you would just take a punt on a youth team striker before stooping this low wouldn't you? What motivation do our youngsters have these days? No chance of ever getting a chance in the first team when prats like this just get in ahead of you.

McCarthy, I like what you have said so far but please don't make the same mistakes.

Clueless club.

Stop banging on the drum about yet more loans, this is clearly a permanent signing which will be made official in January when the rules allow it to be so. There is this thing you see called a 'Transfer Window' google it! You will be surprised what you might learn! #dimlows
