Davis Linked With Town Return
Wednesday, 21st Nov 2012 10:57

Town want former keeper Kelvin Davis to return to Portman Road, according to a report in one of this morning’s tabloids. The 36-year-old, who is currently out of favour at Southampton, enjoyed a successful spell with the Blues between 2003 and 2005.

Boss Mick McCarthy is said to want to sign Davis on an initial loan with a view to a permanent deal in January.

Bedford-born Davis began his career with Luton Town, during which he spent time on loan at Torquay and Hartlepool. He joined Wimbledon in 1999 before moving to the Blues for £600,000 in the summer of 2003 with the Dons in financial trouble.

After Town lost out in the play-offs to West Ham for the second year in succession, Davis was sold to Sunderland for £1.25 million in the summer of 2005.

Current Blues manager McCarthy took over as manager at the Stadium of Light in March 2006 and Davis was a regular in his side as the Wearsiders dropped into the Championship.

However, it had been an unhappy spell in the North-East for the 6ft 1in tall keeper and he moved on to Southampton that summer for £2 million.

Last season, Davis was named in the PFA's Championship Team of the Year - he had been in the League One XIs in the previous two seasons - as he helped the Saints back into the Premier League.

He started the campaign as their number one but lost his place after their 6-1 thumping to Arsenal in September, although he has appeared once since then, in the 3-0 Capital One Cup defeat to Leeds.

Town moving for an experienced permanent keeper would be little surprise with loanee Stephen Henderson currently the number one ahead of Scott Loach, 24, who was dropped by previous boss Paul Jewell having signed for £150,000 from Watford in the summer.

Davis, who made 93 appearances while with the Blues, is well-known to Town keeper-coach Malcolm Webster from his time at Portman Road and also under George Burley’s management early on in his six years with the Saints.

We should persevere with Loach for my money - he wasn't rated at £3 million by fluke.

TWTD are reporting that Taylor has been arrested in connection with an alleged serious assault. It is not clear how TWTD got the name of the footballer.

If, as alleged, Taylor was involved, then Clegg's position as CEO must now be untenable.

There is a list of other incidents involving current players that is harming the club. He should be managing these people, but is failing to do so. He should resign.

The humiliation of ITFC goes on and on.

Davis was the best keeper we've had since Paul Cooper. He was a much better keeper than Wright, who in my opinion was highly overrated. I for one would be very happy to see Davis return.

Strange. Not one 'too old' comment yet. Good move if true.

Agree with you Highwayman.

If this is true then we have reached an all time low.

Let's have him here. Send Henderson back. At 36, he is not too old for a goalkeeper & did well for us in the past. It's a long time since we had a decent keeper. I always rated Neil Alexander too, but sadly he didn't stay very long.

I loved Kelvin Davis in his previous spell and I don't know if he is still at the standard he was when he was last here now (or better). But he is 36, looks like being here as annother loan and, if he wants to return (or is just using loan as means to get back in Saints 1st XI or a move elsewhere) any subsequent permanent deal will not be a long term signing.

My concern is that we are very fast becoming a "hire 'em. fire 'em" club and we don't give opportunities for players to settle. Loach is a very capable keeper who is in poor form - if he was in the form of his life, we would not have got him for £150k - why could we not show some faith in players.

I'm sure our managers have had in their minds our "best XI," but after a poor performance, they change their minds. (Think Loach, Hyam, Smith, Drury, even Delaney).

The managers who stick aroud the longest build teams, not assemble them quickly. I think Loach needs an arm round him and to be told, "you are the No.1" go out and play.

Yes please but let's sign him up on a permanent deal - totally fed up with the amount of loanees, especially the keeper's.

Davis imho was the best keeper this club has had over the last 20 years.

Striker Taylor Arressted

So Town are now becoming the new Crazy Gang ?

Chopra up before the Racing Authorities soon
Edwards banned from driving
Typhoon Bennett allegedly involved in a fracas in a peterboro night club
The gang of five having a qiuck pint or two the afternoon of PJs departure
Taylor arrested

This seems to be spiralling out of control

Strnge there is no "comment" field available on the article pertaining tro Taylor.

Phil ?

no comment field as people get carried away and put a load of drivel down such as Clegg is responsible for Taylors 'alleged' incident. This is a legal case and if people post on Phils website anything that is liable he could be in trouble hence he has stopped what im sure would be a flow of people "knowing" exactly what went on. Taylor is innocent until proven guilty but will be hung by many here and now.

the highwayman. of all the moronic comments that have been made about clegg resigning, yours really takes the biscuit. of course, if this is proven to be correct, then clegg should take action against taylor, but to suggest hes responsible for another adults behaviour is absolutely ridiculous. so you are saying that if you were to assault someone then the ceos position in the company you work for would be untenable? cant believe you actually think that. just looking for an excuse to have a go at clegg, as theres been no opportunity for a while for that to happen

I know you can only have 5 domestic loans in the team at any one time, but is there a limit to the number of loans you can take in a season?
