McCarthy: Point Gained
Saturday, 24th Nov 2012 18:03

Town boss Mick McCarthy felt that ultimately the Blues’ 1-1 draw with Peterborough was a point gained rather than one lost with Posh having gone in front in the first half.

McCarthy said it could be seen as either points dropped or one gained: “You can see it both ways I guess. It’s a point won.

“I haven’t seen the goal we conceded yet to pick the bones out of it but it looked like another soft and milky goal.

“People just score against us too easily, but I won’t know the reasons why until I see it. We didn’t play well in the first half, we couldn’t pass it to our team-mates.

“But it was coming, the performance, towards the end of the first half we were getting better and thankfully we improved in the second half with a bit more intensity and I think we deserved the point certainly, that’s for sure.”

The Blues manager thought there was no argument with Mark Halsey’s decision to award the spotkick: “I thought it was a penalty, I thought it was a stonewall penalty, to be honest.

“He got him stood up and as he’s gone past him he’s clipped his foot. He may have gone down slowly but it was a penalty.”

He had no issue with the crowd’s reaction to the first half display: “I understand that they deserved to boo us off. We were pretty poor in the first half, I’ve no problem with that at all.

“In the second half I thought there was a response from everybody, from the players and from the crowd. We were getting better, we were starting to look better and goals, penalties, make everyone feel better.

“There were chances at both ends, the game became really stretched,” he added. “We were trying to win it and we were in danger losing it in trying to win it.

“Their keeper made a good save, Hendo made a good save from the shot. They broke on us a couple of times. DJ Campbell clips it with his studs and if he gets a bit more on it he scores. It wasn’t great, it was exciting.”

McCarthy says Nigel Reo-Coker is definitely out of the Nottingham Forest match: “He’s hurt his hamstring so there’s no chance of him playing on Tuesday. He might be out for two or three weeks.”

Posh boss Darren Ferguson said his side would have won if they scored a second goal: “I am disappointed that we didn’t get the three points. I think it was a lost opportunity.

“We just needed that second goal. That was our biggest frustration. If we get the second goal, I think we win the game.”

He had no argument with the penalty: “No, I don’t think so. I haven’t seen it again. Lee Tomlin doesn’t think it was, he felt it was soft, but one of my coaches sits in the stand and he thought it was a penalty. He’s given it, so it is.”

In Mick I trust - He will ensure we fight another season in this division.

I'd much rather have seen Darren Ferguson as boss as opposed to Big Mick

Well, where to begin with this one. Clearly there isn't any confidence in this team. January cannot come some enough.

Higginbotham, who's been ok for us, was abysmal. Quite what he thought he was doing for their goal, I have no idea. Worse than schoolboy stuff, although I suppose Henderson and Cresswell need to take some responsibility.

Reo-Coker, meanwhile, is terrible. Did he do anything at all today? He just gave the ball away, time and time again. It's that midfield that's killing us at the moment.

Otherwise, there isn't a lot to say about that display. Dreadful first half (I had my head in my heads on several occasions), better second, although that we could only score from the spot is a concern. One point more on the board, and we move on. We need to be doing better against poorer teams like Peterborough, though.

Is it just me or did others notice how poor Henderson's body lanaguage was at half time ? He just ambled off looking as though he couldn't careless !
And as for Reo-Coker - has there been a worse midfielder ? He was pathetic, never passed the forward and didn't show any energy or passion.
MM get rid of him and put Hyam in the team.

I know that managers have to come out with these remarks after a match, but it's difficult to see it as a point gained. We were playing at home. Peterborough went into this bottom of the league and having lost six of their eight away games. If we are going to avoid the drop, then we have to win our matches against fellow strugglers.

I am still curious about the position with Luke Hyam. Against Leicester we went 5-0 down after 53 minutes. He was brought on three minutes later and we only conceded one more goal. Today, he was brought on for the last ten minutes or so and according to the match report (I'm afraid I couldn't make the match) we improved noticeably in the final period. What does it take for the manager to pick him from the start?

It seems to me that what we need is an Allan Hunter both to organise the defence and as a dressing room character. Not only was he a superb player in his own right, but he was totally dedicated to the cause. This defence wouldn't dare make mistakes with him around. Anyone who could intimidate Terry Butcher must have been scary! Obviously, it is much easier to write that than actually find and sign such a person.

Fantastic result. Not letting in six and gaining a point. Can't ask for more.

Quiz question: what have Mick and 'Arry got in common?

Clue: £££ yes please. Reputation : couldn't give a monkey's.

Whenever Ipswich go a goal down I'd always take a draw after that, so I am happy from that respect as losing today would have been awful. Still, we were so poor first half and 1-1 against Peterborough is disappointing.

It's hard to analyse in many ways, as so many players are poor. Reo-Coker was one of the worst, as although N'Daw didn't play that much better at least he can win a header and a tackle. As for positives, Campbell did well again, Martin worked hard and got the penalty, and Henderson (who I was surprised to see start after awful recent form) make two crucial saves.

I can't help thinking that we'll be lucky to stay up with a team of loanees. The lack of investment on permanent players in the summer looks a big mistake.

To ipswichbusiness, I think even the real Allan hunter would be better even at his age than the current bunch

peterborough at home should be a comfortable 3 points, especially at home but we concede a sloppy goal early and were on the backfoot as usual!

When Mick was appointed I said he has a dreadful job on his hands keeping this Club in the Championship and today just confirms my thoughts. I agree it was a point gained as Posh were far more fluent than us and must be very disappointed they did not collect all 3 points. A draw was a fair result in the end as we did up our game in the second half but if you cannot beat Peterborough at home then it does not bode well. The defence is lopsided and you may get away with two left sided centre backs once but not twice and I always had the feeling Posh would score. Once again we have no pace whatsoever and yet Posh pick up players like Berahino and Gayle who were miles quicker than anything we have. Can't fault Henderson today as he made a couple of excellent saves and his kicking was better if not perfect. Cannot agree with Mick McCarthy regarding Chopra thought he offered little but then MM is not going to slate him is he. Orr got better as the game wore on but at the moment he is not the player he was. Thought NDaw worked hard and with Reo Coker out now, at last we can see Luke Hyam in the side where he should have been weeks ago. Still not sure about the luxury of having two attacking midfield players out of the four but Martin was one of our better players today and got us the penalty. A long hard season ensues I am afraid.

However way you put it, a draw at home to Peterborough is simply unacceptable. For the life of me i don't know why Reo-Coker plays every week he's dreadful!

Mikeybloo88; I think that we can agree on one thing, namely that Allan Hunter would never, never have allowed "soft and milky" goals against.

Perhaps he could come back in some sort of coaching capacity?

Ipswich business someone like Allan hunter would cost about £40 million these days! I feel your pain however.

Reo-Coker out is a bit of a blessing in my opinion.
Hyam and Drury for me. If nothing else then for their work rate. If we can bring back Loach as well i'd be very happy! Tough ask Tuesday sadly!

I suppose overall this has to go down as a disappointing result. Having said that, before MM took over we lost FIVE straight home games - so a win and a draw is considerably better. Being honest though, we didn't deserve to win this one - if anything Peterboro will be disappointed.

The first half was abysmal ... but second half was okay. Our defence is clearly the worst in the division - in an ideal world the entire back five would be replaced (although Orr needs time). Midfield is up and down; we have some decent players, but the balance seems all wrong. Forwardline, forgetting that many are loans, actually looks okay - barnett will add even further options.

MM will turn this mess around, but as we saw today, it will take time as this is the worst ITFC team I can remember.

I think we can safely say, we will not miss Reo-coker one bit! Awful first half, couldn't believe my eyes. The only way Reo-coker went was backwards. As for their goal, it was a bit of deja vu of the Leicester match? Someone needs to take responsibility there, and i'm afraid Henderson doesn't do that. Hopefully Hyam comes in for Reo-coker now, who I thought again when he came on looked good.

We definitely couldn't of lost this game, a draw was not what I wanted either given we were the home team. We need to try and get as many points as possible until January. VERY important month coming up.

Let's focus on the positives... Reo-coker is out of the forest game. I don't like the idea of two defensive minded central midfielders, I've said it a lot and now maybe big Mick will be forced into a more attacking formation.

At least we didn't lose COYB!

I love fergusons quote.... If we had scored another goal we would have won, no s@@t sherlock :-). Orr was terrible first half but if he can start a game how he finished it I would be happy.. He has begun to develop a partnership with Edwards and that can only get better i feel. Smith was back to being an accident waiting to happen and nearly gifted them the winner! Henderson is no better nor worse than Loach is lets play loach... Can only assume big mick has a new no 1 lined up for Jan or surely he would play loach knowing Henderson is going back! Edwards played with his heart on his sleeve again, I wish we had eleven like him! Anyone see hyam and smith having the bust up!?? Disagree with Chopra I thought he was totally shown up by cambells work rate! We will miss him if he does go back! For me a massive issue is the lack of goals from midfield we miss a Norris type player.

fatcatevans; if memory serves me right, Allan Hunter was signed for £60,000 plus someone I have forgotten going in the other direction. That would have been a big fee by early 70s standards, but loose change now.

It was hard to watch ,we lack so much. Things can only get better in terms of performance. we look at odds with ourselves ,zero cohesion.

TimmyH added 19:20 - Nov 24
Yeah agreed we didn't deserve to win this game, we played somewhat better second half with more tempo but still Peterboro got through us all to easily and had 3 second half opportunities two of which were saved by Henderson. Defense still looks nervy and it seems all 4 aren't really on the same wave length, the only pluses were from the outside midfield men Martin and Edwards (who again looks a cut above the rest) - N'Daw and Reo-Coker showed little quality whilst Chopra's comeback was quiet and our biggest threat again from Campbell who should have bagged himself a brace.
First time I have seen the team this season and have to say not particularly confident at the moment we aill get out of the relegation zone, and as another poster mentioned the January transfer window can't come soon enough - some dead wood out please and hopefully MM will know who to bring in.
