Colchester Midfielder Set to Sign
Saturday, 12th Jan 2013 23:33

TWTD understands that Town are set to sign Colchester United midfielder Anthony Wordsworth in a £200,000 deal. In November, we reported that Blues boss Mick McCarthy and assistant Terry Connor had watched the 24-year-old in action for the U’s.

Camden-born Wordsworth came through the Colchester youth system and made his senior debut in August 2007.

Since then the central midfielder or wideman has made 155 starts and 44 substitute appearances, scoring 35 goals.

Last season he scored 13 times but this campaign, as the U’s have struggled near the foot of League One, the set-piece expert has managed only three.

Wordsworth, who has also been linked with Charlton, Leicester City, Middlesbrough and Peterborough recently, is out of contract at the end of the season.

A more creative central midfielder presenting a greater goal threat seemed likely to be on manager Mick McCarthy’s January wish-list even before Nigel Reo-Coker left the club at the end of his short-term contract.

Meanwhile Watford boss Gianfranco Zola has revealed that the Hornets have received interest in winger Mark Yeates with Bristol City and Town believed to be the clubs involved.

The Blues were recently linked with Yeates's Watford team-mate Jonathan Hogg, however, a local source suggested to TWTD that the former Colchester man was instead the subject of Town interest.

Dubliner Yeates, 28, has also played for Tottenham, Middlesbrough, Sheffield United, Brighton (loan), Swindon (loan), Hull (loan) and Leicester (loan).

Whats happening with DJ Campbell, we have already signed three strikers but QPR aren't playing him. Redknapp has confirmed that QPR are interested in signing Peter Odemwingie. And with Zamora, Cisse, Taarabt, Johnson and Odemwingie DJ's not going to get a look in. He didn't play at all this weekend. Are we just going to pass off on him?

looks a great player in that video. also left footed and attacking . perfect !

As for t yeates i remember him tearing us apart on the left w wing for sheff utd 9 the year they went down ) and he got 2 goals and an assist for their third. Tricky winger .Pretty sure he is left footed and a good dead ball specialist aswell.

Garv, you seem to be the only one who doesn't rate him. Is this because he is neither Owen Garvan or a PJ signing?

He,s twice the player Garvin will ever be.

Fatcatevans that is big talk for a player who has yet to prove himself in the championship ,compared to a regular for a challenging team at the top of the table with a number of goals and assists ?

I haven't seen anything of Wordsworth, but he sounds like the type of player we should be signing.
I would be sorry if it meant the end of Martin. I know it's unfashionable to say so, but I think he's a decent player. Mind you, there doesn't exactly seem to be a queue of clubs trying to sign him so maybe I'm wrong!

Seen him a few times. Don't rate him. Yes he's stood out in a struggling league 1 side, but then I think I'd stand out in that team to be honest.

Well buryblue with respect I doubt many of these people calling this the signing of the window have actually seen him play and are most likely being blindly optimistic and over positive, which we are all guilty of at times including me. I don't blame them after what Mick has done so far.

But I have seen him play a few times and all I'm saying is I don't think he's a star. Stood out for Col u because they are a shambles, but even then he wasn't brilliant. Was better last season I think. He's got a good left foot and delivers a top set piece, other than that I'm not sure.

Mick knows more about football than me though, so we'll see.

The scales will fall from your eyes when you see him play Surco 72. One things for sure he can't be slower than Garven .

Nice one..decent goalscoring record too.

Glad to get Reo-Coker off the wage bill at the same time..another who's been a waste of space gone.

Lots of excited posts on here regarding this player but without wishing to put a dampener on things , there's no cast iron cofirmation of him signing yet - or is there!

From what I've seen of him he looks great, anyone else notice the look on his face in the picture!
