New Signings Should Spark JET
Tuesday, 15th Jan 2013 06:00

Manager Mick McCarthy says players such as Jay Emmanuel-Thomas should use the influx of recent signings as a "spark". The 22-year-old was left out of the 18 at Cardiff on Saturday having been a regular matchday squad member ever since he joined the club from Arsenal in the summer of 2011.

McCarthy said: “You always hope that new players coming in might spark other players and if it doesn’t it’s to their detriment, I always think. If someone coming in doesn’t make you play better, run harder and be better for it, it’s your loss.”

The Town boss had seen Emmanuel-Thomas, who scored in yesterday’s U21 victory at Charlton, as more of a striker than a wide midfielder, however, he says his thinking has changed: “There’s a time when everybody has to deliver. But I’m not suggesting for any minute that my patience is running thin with him anyway.

“I’ve played him up front, I’m not convinced that’s his role, although I thought it should be, but he’s certainly gone down the pecking order in that position [since the recent signings came in].

“He played on the right instead of Carlos [at Aston Villa] and I think that’s the position that he prefers. So, he’s just got to keep working at it.”

Soon after taking over at Town, McCarthy said he wouldn’t call the Londoner by his JET nickname until “he looks like he’s got a rocket up his backside”.

However, the Blues boss revealed he recently used it, although in error: “I actually called him JET the other day and he laughed and said it was the first time I’d called him that.

“I said it was a slip of the tongue. It’s not turned to that yet, but he’s working at it. To be fair to him, he trains well every day.”

it wont happen, its just part of JET, he's not capable of that kind of energy, presence or. Not enough pace or energy for a winger and not enough presence for a striker. Sadly even though he's a magician with a ball I cant see him ever finding a position that he's capable of playing or making it above low league football when his contract is out.

I didn't say he shouldn't work hard of course he should but its just not natural for him to do that, its hard to instill that in a player who relies on his skill and dribbling abilities. If the manager pulled Daryl Murphy to one side and said "I'm going to work on you beating players and putting a cross in" he would probably struggle to grasp it. JET has been brought up at Arsenal where most of the work is based on offensive football and possession, sure he can do more off the ball but he has to be educated in doing it or he will just look clumsy. Sometimes it looks like he is lazy but its how he plays, many of our players dont have the skill he has.

Fatcatevans, I don't mean everyone thinks that, and I don't think he will ever be a world-beater or score a hat-trick, but that seems to be the general idea where i sit in upper Britannia. I'm sure that he has one hell of a lot of potential. However, where I sit, if JET tries a skill and it doesn't quite come off, the people who sit around me lose patience immediately. It drives me insane, as I'm sure that the negativity he gets almost as soon as he comes on is a massive factor in his poor performances

It's for the Manager to decide whether he's worth keeping. With his record we probably won't get a lot for him but if we get rid of him for a pittance and he comes good at another club everyone will blame MM for letting him go. It'll be a Jordan Rhodes scenario all over again.

Unfortunately it's rarely match day. There seems to be a school of thought that skill is enough. Unfortunately for Jet stats show that the best teams I.e Barcelona etc actually work harder than the opposition. They impose themselves then play rather than thinking that skill alone will suffice

Get rid of him now not that anyone would want him lazy in the extreme ITFC would be better to put his wages to better use ,like relay PR pitch.

he is not tenacious enough to be a striker. Strikers have to go in where it hurts and he won't. he has undoubted talent but does he have the will? We shall see...

I've seen so many players like JET over the years. Absolutely astonishing in the school playground, storming their way through U12 - U18 level and then just not quite making it in the pro game. Undoubtedly talented as an individual but just something about his game that doesn't work. MM says he is not running out of patience with JET. I think he is also implying that JET doesn't have much longer to start to prove why he should stay on the books at PR.

I think he looks a bit clumsy when he runs with the ball and i agree sometimes he is lazy but the lazy word is somethink Mick wont tolerate from any of the players in his team.
I dont think Mick will move him on because he has got talent and i think he will come in and out of the team as cover.
Mick as just give him a kick up the backside and brought him down to earth a bit because he probuary thought his name was on the team sheet every week somewhere because he was to good to leave out but now he will learn its its not just a team its a sqaud of players who have to work hard for there place not just in training but in match days to.
Mick is such a great manager and he know the players who work hard on and off the pitch theirs no hiding place when he is watching.
Hopefully this will make JET a better player now Mick is on his case but it will go either one way or the other and he better get his act together or it will end up the other.

It's a shame; he seems to have so much ability. I fear that he is one of those players who if we let him go will hurt us.

Doing things like blocking those who are supporting and encouraging him on Twitter has made some of his bigger supporters a lot more critical. It also highlights he is very immature. Perhaps MM can help him overcome this but right now he's more Air Crash Investigation than JET.

He is still young and might mature, or he might be one of those who end up moving around clubs based on potential rather than consistency.
