Midfielder Josh Carson spent Friday and Saturday training with League Two Northampton, but we understand he is still to hear whether he impressed manager Aidy Boothroyd. The Cobblers are one of a number of clubs interested in taking the Northern Ireland international on loan.

Last week, Blues boss Mick McCarthy said Carson would benefit from a spell away from Portman Road: “A few would like to have Josh Carson on loan and that would be something I would be open to.

“I think he needs to go and play some football. He’s just a young lad learning his trade and travelling with us and training with us is not good enough for him, he needs to play. So that might happen.”

The 19-year-old, who played in central midfield for the U21s at Brighton last night, a role he regularly filled when in the academy, is contracted to the Blues until the summer of 2014.

Another player who could move out on loan before the transfer window closes is right-back Jack Ainsley, who recently travelled to Preston to train with the League One side but was with the Lancastrians only very briefly as they instead added Leeds full-back Paul Connolly to their squad on loan.

We understand Ainsley was close to joining Capital One Cup finalists Bradford earlier in the season but the move was halted when the change of manager took place at Portman Road with new boss Mick McCarthy keen to look at all the players at his disposal.

AbujaBlue added 11:56 - Jan 29 It's unfair to say he was a let down, people can't just expect someone of his age to be an instant success playing for a struggling Championship club. Expectations by some on here were far too unrealistic, almost seeing him as an answer to all our midfield problems in the early part of the season. A loan move to the Cobblers would be a good move - see how he plays with them and MM can make an assessment in the Summer.

MathieandMarshall added 12:31 - Jan 29 looked decent when first burst into the first team but never produced anything since. recall him coming back to pre-season that first summer out of shape and dropping down the pecking order. sadly looks like a case of thinking he'd "made it" too soon.

Mark added 13:13 - Jan 29 I remember Carson outshining Wickham, in Jewell's first few months I believe it was. He looked a real handful and scored a few goals that season. The next two seasons though he has looked so poor that he won't even make it as a professional. I think Jewell said Carson returned unfit in the summer, and that seems to me like throwing away a golden career.

Couple of games for Northern Ireland and he thinks he is a world beater. The club gave him a 3 year deal not so long ago and he has gone backwards very rapidly. Time to move him on I think. Maybe Chelmsford could give him a trial!!!!

Any promising youngster's progress is bound to be erratic - sometimes playing impressively but occasionally being disappointing on the pitch. It sounds to me that, overall, MM is managing his young players well. Micknosehowtodoit: It is common practice for players to have a trial, at the very least a training session, before they sign on any dotted line. No manager will sign a player that does not live up to his expectations. Carson has the talent. Has he the application? We will soon know.
