Owner Sounds Out Skipper Edwards
Tuesday, 9th Apr 2013 12:52

Skipper Carlos Edwards has revealed that he recently met with Marcus Evans at the Blues’ owner’s house where he was quizzed on his thoughts regarding next season. Edwards was speaking at last night’s Supporters Club event at Brantham, where he was joined by team-mates Tommy Smith and Jason Brown, joint-managing director Ian Milne and player liaison officer Simon Milton.

More than 100 fans were at a packed Brantham Bull for an entertaining question and answer session in which the established players, new boy Brown — who already appeared very happy and settled at the club — and Milton painted a very positive picture of life at Playford Road under Mick McCarthy.

Edwards was in no doubt that Evans remains “100% committed” to Town despite five years in which the Blues have failed to seriously challenge for a place in the Premier League.

The 34-year-old said he wasn’t expecting to be sounded out by the club’s owner: “I had a meeting with him a couple of weeks ago. The questions that he was asking me, I was really surprised. I don’t think a manager has asked me those sorts of questions.

“He was asking me things like ‘What do you think we should be doing for next season? Which areas do I think we should be strengthening?’.

“But obviously I’m the club captain, a senior player and he took everything on board. He himself was really surprised and I was surprised at the conversation that we were having.”

The Trinidad and Tobago international, who recently triggered a clause in his contract entitling him to an additional year with the Blues, left feeling confident about the 2013/14 campaign: “He was so straightforward and the feeling that I got after I left the meeting was that we’re going to good come next season because he wasn’t just asking me the questions for the sake of it, just for conversation. He could have seen me for five minutes, but I think I was there for maybe 45 minutes at his house.

“It made me feel that this is the place to be come next season because I can guarantee you that whatever the gaffer needs for next season that he’s going to do his best to make sure he has it. I just hope that I’m not just saying that, that it could come to reality this time next year.”

Milne, who was asked about Town’s financial results and reiterated the earlier comments made by financial director Mark Andrews, says Evans will continue to back his bosses and will soon be speaking to Mick McCarthy regarding their summer transfer plans: “Marcus takes the advice of the manager at the time and I’m sure it will be a very interesting discussion that he will have with Mick.”

After the question and answer session and a raffle, in which skipper Edwards was one of the winners, Milton chaired an auction of memorabilia donated by the players — Brown’s gloves, Smith’s boots and Edwards’s shirt - raising £500 for the academy.

Milton, who is also the academy’s sponsorship manager, flew out to Spain earlier today to join up with the U13s squad which is playing games against Barcelona and Espanyol this week.

The Supporters Club’s next event is Legends in Legends on Saturday with full details on their website here.

How much did Brown's gloves go for? I wouldn't pay more than their shop value.

Don't suppose Carlos suggested we need new wingers/wide players then? ;)

Browns gloves fetched a fiver ,and that included a day out in Barcelona for Milton who was the main bidder. Carlos shirt fetched a tenner ,this included a day at the races with Chopra. Smiths boots went for 485 quid and included a year long supply of of new Zealand lamb.. Happy evening spent wondering what next season will bring watching smith play without boots , Edwards without a shirt ,and well urmmm brown at home trying to get hold of Milton.

Bossman .... bluefest got a negative because some people on this site just read things and take them literally. Made me laugh too.

Of all the brain-dead people to invite for a meeting it had to be Carlos. I am sorry if this offends some supporters but making him captain was and still is, a complete joke. I thought once Mick took over from Paul he would relieve Edwards of the captaincy but this has not been the case. Yes, it was a great goal he scored last week - even if it was a long time in coming but quite frankly I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall when he talked with Marcus Evans for near on an hour! You don't have to be a rocket scientist to know that at the end of it Evans must of though, "Well... that was a waste of time...must check what captain actually means in footballing terms because it obviously does not involve intellect"

We really must confirm Championship status fiest before even thinking about whats going to happen close season, this has still not been put to bed. We have just seen how quickly we went up the table with a good win, the same could happen to those below us; so concentration is of the upmost importance; as is continued support. We need as many people as possible at Saturdays game so all season ticket holders should speculate £40 and buy the extra tickets, even just to give them away to friends; but make sure there are vocal. Saturday's game is a big one and the boys need all the help they can get. COYB.

niceone bluefeast made me laugh to and you are right think (the majority) are more relaxed now!

Whoever he asked and why it has to be alot better than a Venky summons to India.

Gazelle - he doesn't even know what he looks like as he gagged and blindfolded for 24hours prior to his interrogation Lol

should have read "could not should buy extra tickets, I know everyone spends a lot of money to see the lads; but if you could afford it to give someone the chance to see ITFC and increase the noice level on Saturday; it would be £40 well spent.

relax Lennyboy. we are safe. unless we start playing like a completly different team and gain zero points then i think we will be fine. if you look at the current form table i would calculate 2 points is needed at most

Summer transfer plans should be non-existent. If Evans has learnt anything from the past six years, it's that wholesale changes to a well-performing team at the backend of a season cause it to perform badly at the start of next. Sign up the better loanees, then step away from the cheque book. End of.

Have to say not sure if Carlos is sure of a starting place next season, we need more creativity and possibly Tabb in the centre. Steadman, McGoldrick and a signed dependable goalie (not loan) and a goalscorer. Not sure if that is asking too much.

I know Carlos hit a screamer saturday but i still don't think he should be first name in the starting 11. I'd like to see us bring in another winger or two next year to compete for his place!

Norwichbeater, I know what you are trying to say to me but it's difficult to do that and I probably won't until after the Birmingham win...oopps sorry...match. Ya see your positive nature is infectious. Oh and with a really good name like yours you need a picture.

Very interesting. I hope ME has also sounded MM out! If so we will get some real attacking players next year - creative ones at least.

Is creativity in Mick's style of management though? - he might want to keep playing the way we are for next season and get a tough no nonsense cm in and a goalscorer. I feel Steadman and another goalie on our books is a must though.

Let's face it we would probably be near the play-offs if PJ was sacked a month or so earlier!
