U21s Win At Colchester
Monday, 22nd Apr 2013 20:55

Mark Timlin, Jack Marriott (pictured) and Michael Chopra netted the goals as Town’s U21s ended their 2012/13 campaign with a 3-0 victory at Colchester United.

The Blues took an early lead with a goal in the third minute. Lee Martin had his shot well saved, but the ball was pushed into the path of Timlin, who had an easy finish.

Town doubled their lead five minutes later. A strong run into the box from Marriott combined with a cool finish saw the striker add to his already impressive goal tally this season, nine of them for the U21s in addition to 17 for the U18s.

Colchester had their first decent chance on goal in the 13th minute, with Tosin Olufemi having a shot blocked by Reece Brown.

The second half started off with Colchester having the better of the possession with the Blues playing as if the job had already been done.

Colchester left-back Michael O'Donoghue almost got his team back in it when his cross from the left was tipped over by Arran Lee-Barrett.

The home side had their best chance of the game in the 64th minute. A good cross to the back post from substitute Jack Simmons — a former Blues academy scholar - found Olufemi unmarked, but he headed wide of the target.

With 17 minutes remaining the Blues got their third goal, this time through Chopra. The striker took a great first touch to make some space before coolly placing the ball passed the keeper.

Lee-Barrett was called into action with six minutes remaining, again from an O'Donoghue cross which almost crept in at the far post.

Overall, it was a decent display and a good performance to round off the season. Two goals in the first half meant there wasn't a need to work as hard in the second with the game essentially over.

Jack Marriott continues to look impressive getting another goal and could be finding himself in the first team in the near future.

Lee-Barrett was alert to the end and made a strong save with only seconds remaining to earn himself a clean sheet.

U21s: Lee-Barrett, Hewitt, Mings, Berkane (Leddy 90), Brown, Clarke, Timlin, Wordsworth (Lawrence 46), Marriott, Chopra, Martin (Galvin 65)

Colchester: Phillips, Spence, O'Donoghue, Sanderson, Fletcher, Heath, Hubble, Melaugh, Olufemi, Ladapo (Szmodics 75), Wright (Simmons 46). Att: 232.

I thought we were only allowed 3 overage players?

First time I've seen reserves this season, we've got some good players. Big and strong at the back, centre backs looked good, Brown and Clark. Tidy midfield, and Marriott and Chopra worked hard and rewarded with a goal each. Hewitt looks very good, Martin sadly disappointing as ever.

The overage rule is outfield players. Keepers don't count

Marriott scoring a goal again? Would love to see him get 15 minutes from the bench in the first team.

Hopefully we can get 3 points against Birmingham and hopefully we can give boys like Marriott a bit of a run out at Burnley and see how they get on!

Hopefully Marrriott can be our young Michael Owen next season. Timlin could also be a good prospect.

I went last night, great performance from most of the lads Tyrone Mings and Reece Brown looked brilliant at the back and Jack Marriot ran the show upfront.

In terms of the so called first teamers Chopra was agaiin awful and even at this level looked lazy and his first touch kept to the usual poor standard we are used to, although all creit to Chops he did score a good goal. Lee Martin was ok down the wing at times but spent much of the game looking disintrested and fed up.

Elliot Hewit was very very good he had no trouble in dealing with the very little threat colchester had to offer but was much more of a threat to colchester in terms of attacking with one or two really good attacks down the right hand side linking up well with the wide man.

Overall a decent display, but what I got from it the performance is that chopra simply isnt good enough in his current form and Martin really has very little intrest in playing for ITFC. Although there are positives to take such as Jack Marriot and Tyrone Mings who I think we could see breaking into the first team in the very near future.

J45 don't know where you got the disinterested from Martin - Knackered maybe but certainly gave it his all. Chopra I would have said looked totally disinterested in the first half.

Lucytown- Martin offerd very little in both halves considering the level he was playing at. You would expect a player of his qaulity to bring more to the table at a game like that and not sure how he could be knackered he hasnt been playing for three weeks he should be fiit and pushing to get in the first team which going by lasts nights performance he isnt even close to.

Although cant dissagree about chopra looked very poor in first half.

Can't see that disinterested and quality are anywhere near the same. He has been ill and had an injury so obviously hasn't been training therefore not match fit or up to speed.
