Chambers Players' Player of the Year
Wednesday, 24th Apr 2013 00:27

Central defender Luke Chambers was named the Town Players’ Player of the Year at Tuesday evening’s end of season dinner at Milsoms in Kesgrave.

Aaron Cresswell’s strike during last week’s 3-0 victory over Crystal Palace at Portman Road was named the Goal of the Season, while Tommy Smith carried off the Boxholders and Sponsors’ Player of the Year gong.

Luke Hyam won the John Kerridge Memorial Trophy for the most improved player, manager Mick McCarthy having been the man deciding the destination of that award.

Striker Jack Marriott was the Academy Player of the Year, having netted 26 goals for the U18s and U21s during 2012/13.

Voting for the Supporters' Player of the Year has already started online and continues before Saturday's game against Birmingham City.

Younger Town fans can also vote for the Junior Blues Player of the season here.

Sounds like the right people won the right awards, Smith, Chambers, Cresswell, Hyam and Marriot all deserve acknowledgement so well done to all involved.

Couldn't agree more. Chambers and Smith have been a rock at the back and also delighted Hyam's cemented a place in the first team after we all begged him to be given a chance! Looking forward to the future with players like Marriott coming through. Exciting times to be a Town fan again.

Can't argue with those results. They all definitely deserved an award. Would be great to see Marriot get a few mins in the first team, after we are safe of course.

Well done to Chambers. Deserves it.
TonyThePony- barring a mathematical disaster- we are safe. Barnsley have to beat Hull, Huddersfield have to beat Bristol , Peterborough have to beat Sheff Wed and Wolves have to beat Burnley. Even in the event of these results - it would take some weird results on the final day for us to be gone (and Huddersfield have to play Barnsley on the last day). Fair enough, we have an awkward last game against Burnley (who are also fighting for their life in this division).
Would be more concerned if I was a Blackpool fan. They have Derby at home followed by Bolton away. Bolton away is never good (and double bad as its basically a derby game).Blackpool really must beat Derby, so will be watching that match carefully also.
Of course- we should AT LEAST pick up 1 more point this season (though all of us will hope for all 6).
We can't count our chickens- but barring a disaster we are safe. Feel 1 of the big names (Blackpool or Wolves) is going to go down though and given their squads and parachute payments that would be a catastrophy for either club.
I am assuming Wolves' premiership parachute will continue into League 1? What a strong team they will have there......that's if they can get the players to play there.

Well done Mr Chambers fully deserved ,even after your slating at the start of the season by many fans on here .An excellent partnership with Smith that can continue for a number of years with Cresswell and maybe Hewitt also ,with Loach sat behind and Luke Hyam sat in front all the youngsters could form a strong core that we have been so missing .
Excellent work by MM to get them playing with confidence and to their levels of ability but well done also to PJ for original signings

well said Surco72
I'd just like to point out that PJ made all those signings - Chambers, Hewitt, Loach and Cresswell... it didn't work out for him, but for those players certainly did, and hopefully MM will take them (and us) to the Premier league... COYB

An excellent performer once he found his feet after the first few weeks. His passion, commitment and desire is clear to see which makes him a favourite amongst us.

I cant see any reason why he cant go on to be a club captain for years to come! Well done Lukey Chambo.

itfcserbia: You are so right.

Roy Keane destroyed the squad
Paul Jewell rebuilt the squad
And Mick McCarthy will improve it beyond the level that Roy Keane first inherited.

Still feel a bit sorry for PJ.

What were the odds back in October before Jewell went that Chambers and Smith would be our best two players this season?! Well done to Big Mick - and to the two players, of course.

I'll never dislike PJ. Always liked him as a person and no one can question his effort for the club, and i don't think some people understand just what a mess Keane left behind for him to clear up. He did make some very good signings (Chambers, Hewitt, Cresswell) and got the wage bill down hugely too! However, he isn't in the same bracket of class as Mick in terms of management.

Didn't Chambers get a similar gong at Forest ? At least as good as McAuley and wouldn't look out of place in the Premiership.

one thing we are starting to get now that no manager can buy or loan is belief. The quality of play still needs work but the team are pulling together; believing in themselves and trust in the coaching team. RK dissected the team and tried to mash it all together and ultimately failed; PJ made some shocking and clever signings but couldn't work the team well enough; And MM has come in with his team and carefully started to stitch the holes up; mades some inspired loans; bought Scott loach back into form; bought the defence into form and ha patience with the front line. Now I feel all we need is to try hard to hold onto the Defense; try and sign stearman, McGoldrick and Tabb; have a heart to heart with Chopra, Sign Murphy of he is reasonable in his wages (I never rated him until Mick McCarthy came along he's improved greatly) and get some new blood in Midfield. I have respect for Martin and Drury but I don't feel they are the right fit. With any luck next year the loans we make are exactly for what they should be; depth and cover for injury and suspensions maybe with a marquee season long striker loan with intent to buy. I feel Marriott in the youth set up should be allowed to move on loan for the first three months of the new season only then bought on for sub appearances if he maintains his youth quality a into the professional ranks.

Congrats to Luke and all the other winners..defensively we're looking the strongest we have for 9 or 10 seasons..the backline is picking itself at the month and that's always a good sign.

Another shout out to Jewell for signing Chambers but a big pat on the back for MM & TC for getting the team organised.

Well done, thoroughly deserved on all counts.

I would have no problem with Marriott being involved on Saturday. At the end of the day he is not going to lose us the game being a striker (it would be differenet if he was a GK or Defender) and we are just not going down, whatever this matematical rubbish is about. It just isnt going to happen.

MM dropped him when he first came and that has worked wonders! Since then he has been exemplary and performed very well.
Well deserved award and here's hoping he might get even better as time goes on.

Chambo: I remember when we signed him Forest fans said his game had fallen apart since being given the captaincy. Strictly from a fan's viewpoint (I dont know what goes on behind the scenes) I would like Smith to become next club captain - he's obviously done enough to get NZ captaincy (although maybe that's because all their other players are useless, I've no idea). Thank you.

One thing all teams need is commitment. Chambo has manned up, in a difficult environment, and shown us exactly what we were missing under Keane and Jewell. He may not be everyone's image of a Player of the Year, but come the voting on Saturday we could do a hell of a lot worse. He already has my vote. Rock on Chambo!
