Emmanuel-Thomas: Time for New Adventure
Monday, 6th May 2013 12:45

Midfielder Jay Emmanuel-Thomas says it’s “time for a new adventure” having been told he can move on by the Blues. The 22-year-old and striker Michael Chopra have been informed that they can leave Portman Road this summer if offers come in, despite having a year left on their contracts.

The former Arsenal youngster tweeted: “Time for a new adventure, had a great time but my time is up. #ThankYou”

Emmanuel-Thomas made 43 starts and 32 substitute appearances for the Blues, scoring nine goals, having joined from the Gunners in the summer of 2011 for a fee which could ultimately have reached £2 million had various clauses been triggered. Chopra has already said he won’t necessarily be moving on.

Keeper Arran Lee-Barrett and midfielder Andy Drury have been told they won’t be offered new terms when their contracts are up at the end of the season, while Lee Martin has rejected much-reduced new terms.

We understand keeper Jason Brown, who signed on a short-term deal in March, is now also set to be released.

If JET had Nouble's work rate he would be awesome, without it he is a luxury we can't afford in the team.

Will watch his progress with interest.

Good luck to him and a real grown up attitude to what must have been very difficult news for one so young (Unlike the reaction of MC, who will get heaps of abuse for his reaction to the news). Well done young JET.

I feel most of us are letting our opinion of the guy in general cloud our perception from a purely footballing point of view. If it were Martin or Murphy that put it JET standard performances, everyone would want them gone in an instant. His personality and the fact he just simply looks like 'he should be good' tempts you to keep wanting him to have another chance. It is a shame, got to love the sort of 'banter' he and provide, must be good to have in the changing room.

I'd personally like to see him stay, but has he done enough since he has been here, probably not. Sounds like Mick and TC had been working with him a lot, perhaps they don't think they can improve him any further.

Three quality players on their day but not seen enough from Chops or JET and Martin clearly thinks he can get more money elsewhere. If replaced by Judge, Doyle and McLean will we be moaning in 6 months? I doubt it.

Talented, maybe! He has simply not delivered. Flashes of talent every other match cannot be seen as enough. I have thought throughout this season that he really needed to make a much bigger impression, or get on his bike. We can't be continually waiting for him to come good. However, like Chopra, I don't see a queue of clubs lining up for the opportunity to take him.

That said, I like the guy, I like his style and the way he presents himself. He will definitely be missed if he goes, and maybe, maybe, there is still a degree of mileage left in his Ipswich story.

Expect his mate Frank(Nouble) will miss him as they seem to have a good rapport, wouldn't want to see a whole team of grafters;but have to trust managers judgement.

Gutted he's leaving, but MM knows more than any of us and must see he's not going to work here. Has so much promise but never really produced it here. At least he has said the right things, whereas Chopra seems to take the pi$$ again. He'll gladly stay in the reserves as long as he's collecting his wage.

Best of luck JET, sod off now Chopra

The more I think about this, the happier I am with it. Too long have we allowed big contracts to Peter out to nothing only to see us recoup nothing on the fees we've paid. If Chopra and JET both have poor seasons this year we'll be in exactly the same boat. At least putting them in the shop window early gives us as much time as possible to avoid that happening!

Also, chops's wages alone are enough for three or four lower league players!

Again, I think MM and TC have these two decisions bang on!

I just trust MM / TC, don't know why, i just do!! No-one else i can remember has come in, turned it around and survived, and then grab the bull by the horns and taken charge..........COME ON MICK!!!!!!!!

Not bothered, didn't do enough for me. In fact the only one I am sorry to see leave is ALB, poor lad got so much stick at times but always tried his best. In fact was usually excellent for the first 3 games of any recall but would then fade, I think he's good enough to be number 3. I hope Mick as some keeping options as we are now only left with one.

..... I would have thought that maybe his response to this would have been 'to buck up' and prove himself at long last - AT THIS CLUB.
Maybe he thinks it's easier to do as he has here - at some other Club - before they eventually move him on also.

If this lad is going to be a success in the game - he needs to engage the above 'first liner' - if not, get out and pursue another career.
He is working currently for a Club, and Manager, that has presented him with a tremendous opportunity - he may not realise it, but chances are that he will regret not taking it. Watch this space.

"I for one will not miss him although he has the skill to make the grade at championship level and is certainly worth a fee. "

Umm, skill-wise he is arguably Champions League level in all honesty - it's everything else which is in question.

Very sad to see him go, but I don't think he's that interested in dedicating his life to football.

@Keanish - yep agree, Mick's looking obviously at the players who simply aren't contributing enough alongside their pay packet. Martin as well now and as you mentioned there in the window if anybody wants them.

Of course JET could become a very good player but he's had many chances and MM & TC have had plenty of time to take a close look at him. MM seems to deal in certainties not wishful thinking. Taking into account that retaining JET could trigger more fees, I think MM has made a wise decision. I'd like to see us take a punt on a two or three young, hungry players from outside the Premier League- that's where we've had most success on the transfer market- Walters, Cresswell, Chambers, Hewitt, Loach, Nouble, McGoldrick (sure I've missed some)

I don't think that players that have been stars or been at 'massive' clubs in the Premier league are hungry enough to play in the Championship- Chopra, Bowyer, Reo-Coker, JET, Martin spring to mind- sure I've missed some. I suppose Carlos is the exception that proves the rule.

I suppose I'm really talking about attitude- hunger, a little humility and professionalism. Our experience has shown that you're much more likely to find these attributes in players if they see ITFC as career progression rather than a step-down.

The sad thing for Mr Emmanuel-Thomas is he will be a great asset for a lower Premier League side but is too much of a luxury player in the Championship. However, he shown a much better attitude than his colleagues at this news and I hope for his sake he fulfills the promise of the talent we have occassionally seen.
