Villa Linked With New Move for Cresswell
Tuesday, 21st May 2013 23:27

Aston Villa will renew their interest in Town left-back Aaron Cresswell this summer, according to tabloid reports.

Last July, Villa made an enquiry regarding Cresswell, 23, before eventually opting to add Middlesbrough left-back Joe Bennett to their squad.

Manager Paul Lambert is said to be keen to improve his backline during this close season and will reportedly again target Cresswell, who played every minute of Town's 2012/13 campaign.

If an offer is forthcoming it would come as no surprise to Blues boss Mick McCarthy, who said recently that he was expecting interest in the Liverpudlian, who he views as “a Premier League footballer in the making”.

Cresswell, who is contracted to the Blues until June 2015, joined Town from Tranmere at the end of his terms at Prenton Park in the summer of 2011.

A Football League tribunal set compensation at an initial £240,000 rising to £520,000 after various milestone clauses, while Rovers are entitled to 20% of the profit if Cresswell is sold.

As Cressy suggests in this picture: "No chance"
Stay away Villa. Anyway, is there a slim chance we might get Bent? I know wages are a high task but a loan wouldnt be THAT unlikely?

Would be gutted to see Cressy leave, been one of our most consistent players for the last two years and we'd just got a settled back line. Hopefully just paper talk but if we do get a few million then hopefully Evans will put the money back in to improve the squad.

If we have to let him go, please make sure it's for a proper wedge, something to rebuild the team further. £10M+

i'm not that involved in scouting up and coming players but surely to find someone on his wage, age, and quality even for 6mil is gonna be a challenge for us if he leaves

Hopefully Cressy will give the only ex-ipswich player in the villa squad a ring before deciding anything.

I'm sure Darren Bent would confirm that Lambert is a egotistical, tempestuous ar$e and to avoid contact with him at all cost.

Lambert won't be there for long in the new season, he only just escaped losing his job this time round and Cressy is no mug. In the meantime Lambert can go **** himself. Sorry about that but that bloke brings out the worst in me, made even worse knowing he's an ex scummer.

Said it once will say again and I think I am falling on deaf kiddies ears tbh. Mick will get us promoted next year, then relegated the year after- cos he's not bright enough to survive in PL. Championship is his level. You heard it here first

Bangor31 - I know he's only played the one game, but Mings does look a good prospect. Not that I want to lose the excellent Cresswell, but Mings at left back and Hewitt on the right next season (with Chambers and Smith in the centre and Loach behind) wouldn't cause me any real disquiet either.

Personally I feel Cressy was very average this season. There isn't one player in our squad who is worth over £3m. I think if villa do decide to make an offer of anything over £3.5m then town will sell. If invested back into the club as a transfer kitty; £3.5m will go along way in the Championship.

Considering the inflated prices nowadays, would have to be similar value to wickam, otherwise there is nothing in it for us. How long is left on his contract? Want to avoid another bosmun situation also though

Walk the wark
mick got wolves into premier league and how long were they there for??
Was it after his sacking they started to have major problems, who knows what would have happened if they didn't sack him.
I don't know how bright he is but he is no mug.

Lazy tabloid jounalism again. Every summer we see the same thing; if there is no story, let's dig out an old one of a player being linked & add the words "renewed their interest". Bennett has done well for Villa, especially since Christmas, they are not going to spend £6m (Cressy played every minute so he hardly lost value) for a player to have in reserve.
There will be Premiership interest in Cresswell no doubt, but it won't be from Villa

Cresswell has publicly stated he doesn't want to move, having settled & bought a house in the area. I suppose it would depend how much Villa would pay. Let's hope it doesn't happen, but whatever, we mustn't let him go cheaply. I know Lambert is not popular on here, but he has to be one of the best managers around. What he succeeded to do at Norwich, was unbelievable considering how low they'd sunk. At Villa, he only just managed to keep them up, but with a young developing side, they'll do much better next season.

I only have two words to say to Lambert and Villa and the second one is OFF you can make up your mind for the first

Win Win this one for me - if he stays we keep a very good and reliable left back (played every game of the season) if he goes Mick will spend the money wisely not like our previous managers!!! Onwards and upwards either way!!

"Tabloid" is the important word in this article. I for one won't start making a fuss about this until it's in the EADT or an actual report directly from TWTD.

Don't think cressy will go but if he did cash plus bent on a season long loan would be a good deal.thing is will the money we get go on players if wickham went for 8m cressy must be worth 6m at least.

One good thing to consider is that the money gap between Premier earnings and Championship is even greater, if a Championship club can afford not to need to sell, they certainly have far more bargaining power, and that is the case with us.

We can name our price, if Villa are prepared to pay, fine, if not, then we keep him, but you then risk him running his contract down and leaving.

Duncan - That's providing ME lets MM have the money to recruit. There is no certainty that for any player sold MM will have that money to re-invest!
