Chopra Linked With Wednesday Move
Monday, 22nd Jul 2013 09:16

Blues striker Michael Chopra is reportedly set to be reunited with his former Cardiff City manager Dave Jones at Sheffield Wednesday. Rumours on the TWTD Message Board over the weekend linked the 29-year-old, who has been made available for transfer despite having a year remaining on his contract, with the Owls, while a proposed switch to Barnsley, also mentioned as a potential destination over the weekend, is said to have previously broken down.

Blues boss Mick McCarthy played down talk of serious interest in Chopra after Saturday’s game at Barnet — “not yet” — but admitted that the former England U21 had been left on the bench to prevent him picking up an injury.

Unconfirmed sources on social media subsequently reported that Chopra had told some supporters that he would be moving on.

The striker appears certain to leave Town on a free with the club likely to have to settle the remaining year on what’s understood to be an £18,000-a-week contract.

Owls boss Dave Jones has also expressed an interest in re-signing former Blues striker Connor Wickham from Sunderland on loan: "It is something we would be interested in if it came around, but it is far too early to even contemplate it at the moment."

Wickham, 20, spent just over a month at Hillsborough towards the end of last season, netting once in four starts and two sub appearances.

Meanwhile, new right-back Frederic Veseli has been handed the number 20 shirt for the season ahead.

Just transfer a couple thousand into his bet365 account and I'm sure he'd be happy to leave

We must take whatever opportunity arises to get this parasite out of our club.

Not really sure how this works re settling Chopra's contract.
Look at Wickham, for example. Signed a new contract just before his sale, therefore it had plenty of time to run. He didn't hand in a transfer request, but an offer came in from Sunderland and we sold him.
He obviously wanted to go there and therefore I very much doubt we paid off his remaining contract.
Surely if Chopra is keen on a move to Wednesday then we wouldn't need to settle his contract. Surely it's just a case of a normal transfer just without a transfer fee (as stated in Phil's column).
Surely the only way that we have to settle his contract is if we (or ITFC, rather) decide to terminate it, and therefore, as it is a contract, ITFC are obliged to pay off the remainder, or agree a settlement with the player and his agent to be paid over X, Y or Z amount of time?

Surely if he agrees a transfer to Wednesday that automatically cancels his contract with us and starts his new one with Wednesday. I'm pretty certain that when Arsenal sold Van Persie to United for £22m that they didn't also pay the player his remaining year, otherwise I'm sure they'd have been holding out for significantly more money. This is exactly the same just without a transfer fee (which I don't see as a factor that would be likely to make any difference in the process).

Same as JET, there was talk of having to settle his contract, but he agreed a transfer to Bristol City in a player swap deal, signing a new contract. I see no reason why, if the player is consensual to a move, that the club should be paying the player off. Regardless of whether it is at the contract's full remaining value or a settlement value.
It should only be that way if the club decides to terminate the contract outright.
Talk about having your cake and eating it.

Having said all that (apologies for the long read, everyone), I suppose it is a small price to pay knowing that we'll be getting a trouble making, no good waste of space far away from our beloved club!

as somebody stated i think we would have to pay the differance between what wednesday are paying him and what we are currently paying him.
so if wednesday want to pay him 10,000 a week we will pay 8,000 to him until his contract end date at which point payment would stop and he would just have his wednesday wage.
If this happens we should have a clause that he cant play against us.
despite my general dislike for him i still think if wednesday play him up top with a target man next to him he can score 20 goals and id hate him to score against us while we were still paying him

The paying off of his remaining contract, if true, would leave a sour taste.. Pampering of his career again. Hope he appreciates it

will be good for everyone, we don't need Chops problems, Chops needs a new start so he can finally prove himself & sort h=out his daemons and Sheffield Wednesday need a striker.

We should have just sacked him and then let him sort his self out. I'm sure most employers could quite legitimately get rid of someone who's behaved as he has!

As for paying off his contact, is he not in breach of his contact!?
I pose the question, if you or I got banned from driving; charged by the British Horseracing Authority for "suspicious betting activity"; checked into rehab; wound the fans up; spent nights on the lash in Ipswich before important matches - and then didn't actually score any goals what would happen to us?

"while a proposed switch to Barnsley is said to have previously broken down."

Phil - any idea why the Barnsley deal broke down and where that rumour originated from? Well done to Hamish1979 though for calling it, pretty accurate stuff. It seems some on here owe him an apology.

I wonder what the Owls fans are thinking of all of this?

Really hope this is true and Chopra leaves sooner rather than later!

All the gambling jokes are rather old and cringeworthy now folks.

Another thing, has anyone ever actually witnessed how "disruptive" and how much of a "negative influence" Chopra is within the dressing room? He could well be, I just think its a cheap shot that often lacks any substance.

Unless we are to really save any money, or more importantly find a replacement, I don't really see the point of getting rid of him. Like it or not we haven't got another striker like him at the moment. We could be a good team this year, there's still goals in him given the chances.

Feel it will be another 'Jimmy moment' (what could have been) if/when Michael Chopra leaves. Depressing whichever way you look at it I think.

Poor old chops, in this perfect world we all live in with perfect fans and players and people that have never had a problem or addiction. I think certain section of town fans have helped make the chopra affair much worse than it is or was hounding the guy on twitter faceache etc, yes he has made some stupid comments but you know what he is a goal machine that needs a supplier we havent given him that.
I will be sorry to see him go he will come back to bite us playing for wednesday, and i wont be a bit supprised. MM is not a super god so get real folks he makes plenty of mistakes as well look at some of his signings, and how people soon get on his case when its going wrong. The honey moon is over lets get on with supporting our team manager and players and give those budgies something to winge about. COYB for 40 years plus
