McCarthy Could Look to Loan Market
Tuesday, 6th Aug 2013 06:02

Boss Mick McCarthy says he is able to go back into the loan market if required with his squad having suffered a few early season injuries. Left-backs Aaron Cresswell (thigh) and Tyrone Mings (knee) will both miss tonight’s Capital One Cup tie at Stevenage, while midfielder Anthony Wordsworth is out with a calf injury.

McCarthy said: “We can do it if need be. I’m hoping that Cressy will be back on Saturday. We’re all right for the moment, but if we need to do it, we’ll do it.”

Wordsworth is back in training and Mings will be out for at least two weeks and McCarthy feels his squad would be stretched should too many more of his players pick up knocks: “I want to win this game and I’d like to get some of the injured players back because I do think if we’re relying on 16 or 18 players because of injuries [it'll be tough].

“We’ve got 22 players, two for every position and then we’ve got some of the kids. Whether they’re ready for it, who knows?

“If you get four or five of your main squad injured and you’re trying to compete at trying to get into the top six and trying to stay in the cup it gets difficult, but I want to win this game and see what happens.”

The Town boss says he’d ideally like to get some of his younger players out on loan to gain experience: “We’ve got 22 players and beneath that we’ve got Kyle Hammond, who I think has been exceptional, he’s been great in pre-season.

“And then there’s David October, Byron Lawrence, Amir Berkane, Jack Marriott, they’re really the five that have been pushing and are near it.

“If I got the chance to send them out on loan somewhere, I would. But it’s difficult for anybody to take them on loan at the moment, there have been no U21 games.

“Nobody’s really seen them and I guess when they start playing people will come and watch our U21 games and there’ll be some team from a lower league that might think they might do something with them, that’s when it will happen.”

if they are good enough for a lower league team they are good enough to play against Stevanage throw Marriott and Lawrence in.

Do you remember how we were al saying good old mick, bringing in perminant signings instead of loans. And then he says thus and we say...

McCarthy uses the loan system as it should be, get in strong youngster from top premiership club to add to squad or to come in as short term cover for injuries, not like Jewell who used loan system to make up half the team

Bit harsh there stevelincsexile - using loans to cover injuries is fair enough in my book

Bit harsh there, Mitch.

Making up half the squad with season-long loans is one thing, but dipping in to the loan market to cover a potentially thread-bare squad during an injury hit spell within the squad on a short-term basis is perfectly good use of the loan system in my book.

No one with any sense moans about the odd loan "if required" these days it just makes sense.

Tractorboydan: I agree. I don't think Mitch has thought this one through. MM & TC have got rid of the loanees and made the core of the squad permanent. One loanee is fine. Remember, we have had as many as 7 or 8.

In this case, with 2 players who cover the same position & are both injured, using the loan system makes perfect sense. It's only for cover until AC & TM are fit again.

"...if they are good enough for a lower league team they are good enough to play against Stevanage throw Marriott and Lawrence in."

Except Micks comments above say that he would like to send them on loan, but its about waiting to see if any lower league team think they are good enough.

I think mick would only use the loan market for players as cover, which is the sensible way of doing it. Unfortunately injuries happen

sir Bobby Robson was not a prolific purchaser of players, he bought wisely and sparingly. If we had this loan system during those glory days would we have seen the likes of Sivell,Burley,Butcher,Beattie,Osman,Peddelty,Wark,Woods,Talbot,Osborne,Lambert,Brazil,Gates,Geddes,Bertschin and more. No loans give a couple of the youngsters a game,we should have enough to beat Stevenage,I would be worried if we did'nt.

stevelincsexile.... I think you have misread the story. As I read it MM has no intention of getting in loan players for the Stevenage match or for any matches in the near future. If however, Cressy and Ty fail to make a quick recovery and/or we collect a couple more injuries, the club are in a financial position to dip into the loan market as need be.

Smithy - I guess you could say that Verselli could cover RB or CB so would fill the gap next to Chambers. For the other RM option after Edwards I guess you could place Taylor / Hewitt? I think we have another flexibility in the squad to cover all positions ?

Even if Carson goes i would still like to see 2/3 more permanent signings so we have a squad of 25. If we get a few injuries then we could have problems and i would prefer to see October, Hammond, Berkane etc gain some experience on loan first before they come in as cover

Sounds as though Hammond is really pushing and in Micks thoughts. Would be great if somebody like that really forced their way in the team unexpectedly.

Smithy - I think you can argue that Doherty is cover for Tabb on the left and Ando is cover for Edwards right. Wordy can also switch left and Tabb can come inside etc...As 'MathieandMarshall' rightly says, we have enough flexibility in the squad now to cover all area's - barring further injuries.

McGoldrick must be a good example of how to use the loan system,COYB.

In fairness to PJ he held his hands up on Soccer Saturday and admitted to making a massive mistake relying on loans and pretty much said it's asking for trouble.

As others point out, MM is using the loan system to suppliment his squad and ensure cover for injuries.

if anything I would have a few less senior players say 14-15 max and after that use the academy.
if we have 22-25 senior players what is the point in having the academy?
I think a few people would be suprised how well we would do if we followed this policy but its all about having the grapefruits to implement it
