JET: Me and Mick Didn't Click
Tuesday, 6th Aug 2013 12:19

Former Blues midfielder Jay Emmanuel-Thomas has admitted that he and boss Mick McCarthy weren’t on the same wavelength when it came to utilising the 22-year-old’s talents during his time with Town. The ex-Arsenal youngster left Portman Road for Bristol City this summer in a swap deal which saw Paul Anderson move the other way.

Emmanuel-Thomas, who scored one and created one on his Robins debut, Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Bradford, told the Bristol Post: "Mick McCarthy and I did not really click on the football pitch. We had different ideas and that is why I came to Bristol City.

"I wanted to be somewhere where I knew I would be given a free role to play football. Having played for [City manager] Sean [O’Driscoll while on loan at Doncaster] in the past, I knew what he would want from me"

The Londoner is viewed more as a withdrawn striker at Ashton Gate, a position he appears to relish more than the wide right role he usually occupied at Town where he was expected to be more involved at both ends of the field.

“I've come here to score goals and to create goals, it's as simple as that,” he said. “There will be games when I see a lot of the ball and other games when I don't see so much of it.

"Whatever the situation, I see my job being to make sure things happen in and around the box. I'm here to make and take chances.

"I do have some defensive duties, but getting on the ball and hurting the opposition is my main job.”

Having seen the flick Anderson produced for the opening goal against Crawley I reckon we got the better end of the bargain. Good luck to JET but Mick made the right decision on this one

"There will be games when I see a lot of the ball and other games when I don't see so much of it."

I'm afraid Mr E-T that unless you improve your work ethic, the days where you 'don't see so much of it' will far outweigh the others.

I also hope his team mates do not have to rely on those defensive duties of his, because that was the biggest weakness of his game in my view.

Have you seen Jet play? He's not very good. The country is full of players who didn't quite make it and he is one of them, but If you wan't someone to come off the bench on the last 10 minutes and produce one tricky bit of skill then he's your man.

On Saturday we needed a player like jet/lee Martin I can't think of one time a town player got on the ball and ran at reading I know it's early days but we still need an creative midfielder hyam and skuse are great at protecting the back four but not so good going forward anyone at reading could see the space between our midfield and strikers was massive.tabb was outstanding on Saturday

we've had so many players with potenial only for them to blow it with the look at me attiude. modern footballers need to wake up and understand its the team that matters not the individual.

Two assists for JET tonight for Bristol City. And look at us, we can't even beat Stevenage! JET may well have been a force in the Championship if he'd of been given a creative role. He was one of the few players we had that could make something happen out of nothing. Yes he was frustrating in that he could look lazy and so on. But then creative type players often do look like that, just think of Berbatov. I'm in no way comparing JET to Berbs, however, if you want 11 water carriers who give their all for the team then great, but don't be surprised when there is a lack of goals! :-(
I'm not saying our team is made up of 11 water carriers, players like Taylor and McGoldrick look exciting prospects, however, sometimes creative players have to be cut a bit of slack and certain managers find that hard to do. Just look at Taraabt, he got QPR promoted, but has seemed to cause problems for various managers. But aren't a few problems worth it for a player that has it in his locker to win promotion?

From what I've seen of Paul Anderson so far, he doesn't look anywhere near as skilful as JET. Bit harsh to say that though as it's early days so I'm hoping PA given time does the business. JET is in the past now, best to look to the future, just got a feeling he might come good and not be the write off that so many seem to think he already is. He does need to step it up though in order not to be yet another wasted talent. But he does have the talent, and talent can't taught.

I wonder why he didn't perform much for Paul Jewell either. but he did twitter us fans to stop worrying pre season last year, he said it would all be ok when the league matches start!!!

Football at the lower leagues is full of players like JET - just look at the number of 'England U15/16/17 etc players plying their trade in the lower leagues - alot of them no doubt have talent - but turning that into consistent performances is something else
Terry Connor worked alot with JET - but he just did not deliver
on another note I fear we have another player at the club - who learnt his trade as a youngster at another Prem club - who also may have ability , but not the end product - I hope FN makes it but I am not convinced by him either
Really need a good performance on Saturday COYB !!
