Former Town chief executive Simon Clegg has been handed a new role working on the inaugural European Games which will be staged in Baku, Azerbaijan in June 2015. Clegg, who left Town in February after almost four years at the club, has been named senior European Games consultant.

Speaking about the appointments of Clegg and sports consultant Makis Asimakopoulos, Patrick Hickey, president of the European Olympic Committees, said: “I am delighted we have secured the services of two such experienced and respected international sports professionals.

"I am convinced that both Simon and Makis together will make a major contribution to the success of our inaugural event whilst helping to build the brand for future editions.”

Spyros Capralos, chairman of the EOC’s 2015 European Games Coordination Commission and president of the Hellenic Olympic Committee, said: “Simon Clegg and Makis Asimakopoulos are the best appointments we could have made, both bring considerable experience and skills to this exciting project that will see the best athletes from the 49 European National Olympic Committees compete across 18 different sports.”

Clegg, who also has roles on Madrid’s bid for the 2020 Olympics and as chairman of Great Britain Badminton, added: “I am delighted to have been given this exciting opportunity to help deliver a successful event in 2015 whilst helping to create a dynamic brand for future European Games.

“I look forward to working with the organising committee in Baku and with the Minister for Youth and Sport, Azad Rahimov, to contribute to a memorable event for all 7,000 participants.”
