Smith Called Up
Wednesday, 14th Aug 2013 11:11

Central defender Tommy Smith has been named in the New Zealand squad for the OSN Cup in Saudi Arabia next month. The 23-year-old will be away between September 2nd and 10th.

The All Whites and the hosts are taking part in the tournament along with the UAE and Trinidad & Tobago.

Blues skipper Carlos Edwards could feature for the Soca Warriors, although he recently hinted that he will be retiring from international football.

Smith has previously won 22 full New Zealand caps and has scored two international goals.

So, it's during the international break? Sure with the travelling to Middle East we might miss him for a game or two. Good job we've got Berra: hope he can get up to speed by then!

Great chance for Berra, this is where our strength in depth needs to come good.

No problem. He'll be back 3 days before he has to play, plenty of time to recover.

to be fair NSL , whilst there were some idiots slagging Tommy off constantly there were others who knew he was going to be special

I'm surprised Smith would want to risk his career by taking part in this. Surely being ever present for a (hopefully) top championship side is far more valuable to him. Imagine, if he became third choice after Berra came in and delivered. Big mistake?

I can see your logic flash, but playing for NZ has only been good for Tommy's career so far. Why would he give it up?

Yet more lengthy trips half way round the World for Smith then,. Not good for ITFC , IMO as he will have 40 odd games to play for this Club this season. How can he if he's knackered! I predict he will lose his place to Berra as he pursues his International career.
