McCarthy: Feels Like a Defeat
Saturday, 31st Aug 2013 18:28

Boss Mick McCarthy admitted he felt like Town had been beaten after the Blues’ 1-1 draw at Birmingham. The Town manager was delighted with his team’s performance.

“I feel like we’ve been beaten,” he admitted. “I thought we were excellent all round, I thought we deserved to win.

“I’ve been banging on about it not being bad luck when we’ve lost games, against Leeds, for example, it’s been down to four or five tiny little errors.

“But that was bad luck today, we came up a goalkeeper who was in outstanding form and they’ve had a get out of jail free card. I hope we get a slice of luck like that at some stage.”

Birmingham keeper Darren Randolph made a succession of fine saves and McCarthy feels he was a bargain free transfer for the Midlanders: “On that performance, absolutely, very good, terrific.”

The Blues boss was pleased to see Christophe Berra net in his first Town league start, his first goal in English football, having failed to score during his four years with McCarthy’s old club Wolves.

“Berra’s excellent, he’s been terrific, he’s a really good defender and I was delighted to get him in on a free transfer,” the Blues manager said.

“He’ll add to the squad and he’s got a goal, and so he should as well, he’s good and he attacks the ball. I know he never scored one [for me at Wolves], we did mention that yesterday.”

After conceding Chris Burke’s goal, which appeared to deflect off Cole Skuse, McCarthy admits he was concerned that his team might end up falling to a defeat: “There’s always that when you see one spooning over the goalkeeper like that, you’re hoping you’re not going to get another dose of it. Thankfully we didn’t.”

Regarding the late penalty call when David McGoldrick was felled not far outside the area, the Blues boss wasn’t sure: “I don’t know if it was a penalty, no idea, they’re saying it was on the line. They’re all looking at it I wasn’t sure, I didn’t think we were getting one.”

McCarthy says there has still been no interest Aaron Cresswell, but reiterated that he couldn’t confirm that the left-back — one of Town’s star performers at St Andrew’s — would still be here once the transfer window shuts at 11pm on Monday.

“I haven’t said that, I’ve said that if somebody offers us a shedload of money and he wants to go and it’s enough, he’ll go,” he said.

“I’m not saying that [he’s definitely staying] because I’ll make myself look a chump if I say that and the deal’s right for everybody because that’s what football is.

“Of course, we don’t want him to go, we want him to stay. Who knows? But I don’t think there’s anything happening between now and Monday.

“I keep saying that I think he’s the best in the league, that’s there to be argued by everybody else, but that’s how I think of him and I think he can play in the Premier League.”

He added: “We’ve never had any interest, it’s only you guys [the press] who are interested.”

Regarding Josh Carson who has been on trial at Hibernian this week, McCarthy says no deal is likely to go through even if the SPL side want him with the Scottish transfer window closing at 11pm tonight: “They could be in trouble because I don’t think our secretaries will be in tonight doing that one!”

I want to feel confident when Town go on the pitch, and unfortunately I still feel that I hope we don't lose; not we're gonna thrash em. I had hoped that this would change this season, but it hasn't. We are now in the lower half of the league and another painful year seems to be stretched out in front of us. We need to get some wins under the belt NOW, how though is a good question. Answer on a post card please...coz I don't have the answers. Still will always love the Town. COYB.

Why so downbeat. We have only played five games and two of those were against two of the best if not the best teams in the league and they were games we could and deserved to get something from. We have had bad luck with deflections but be patient our luck will change and I have faith in MM finding the right partner for Mcgoldrick and then onwards and upwards.

Bobby Petta, yes if MM hadn't come in and done the job last season we would be in Div 1. How ever I feel he should have been given a short term contract to keep us up. In the long term I can't see us doing anything apart from being an unattractive mid to lower championship team. ME obviously is not prepared to splash the cash & the monetary restrictions that now apply mean a free scoring forward is realistically out of the question. I would prefer to see attractive, entertaining football & settle for mid table rather than what is on offer aand then build on it. Gus Poyet & and Tarrico are out of work aren't they & they managed to turn Brighton around. GB is unemployed I think. Under Mm we are going to get some pretty boring games through the winter.

Some people here need to get a grip. McCarthy saved us from what would have been certain relegation, he does that, is building a side, and gets the stick he is getting, and he cant spend any money?! Some of you are clueless. I was there today and we played really well. Tunnicliffe, Cresswell and McGoldrick were the stand out players, as well as their keeper. We had lots a good efforts but their keeper was in such good form. Whereas in the other games we cant really say that. Lots of positives on show today. A draw is very harsh on us as Gerken wasnt tested the whole match. They got a bit of luck which we arent getting at the moment. Good turn out today! COYB!

telford blue. I agree with most of your post tho I don't think mcgoldrick will reach 20 goals but what you have to realise is most of those knocking you and the team weren't there today so have a ckue as to what the performance was like. are just on here to criticise and slag the team off. had we won you wouldn't have seen the likes of h32 anywhere near this site tonight

no, no excuses h32, I just tell it as it is, rather thanlike youjust come on to slag the team off when results go against them. when we win ur nowhere to be seen. ste=range isn't it/ always keen to slag off but never there to praise. but then that's prob because youwerent at the game so don't actualy know how the game was. read mms comments, they'll tell you how it was. tho we have I past games been guilty of letting teams off the hook, that wasn't the case today. their keeper was named their man of the match. tells you all you need to know. but that doesn't interest idiots like you dor=es it. I mean why let the facts get in the way of you slagging the team off#

....... first of all DO NOT call me an idiot - OK.
I may well think you are one - but I have more about me as a person than to call you one - OK.

Also, check out your facts please before 'spouting off' - I suggest you check my past posts when we win - your statement will then be proved TOTALLY INCORRECT.

I rest my case, and DO NOT wish to liase with someone who has to be abusive - as indeed you have been.

h32. you've got nothing about you other than being a total .whinger and no, ive never seen you on here once when weve won. wouldn't have a problem with you moaning if those moans were justified, we all do that. but todays performance was very good in general and we simply were unfortunate to concede a deflected goal, and to come across a keeper in top form. their mom. if wed plat=yed poorly then yes, youd have every right to moan but today ur criticism is unjust. will apologise for calling ypu an idiot but just frustratyed that people just slag the team off for no reason

I bet some of you on here are a right laugh down the pub, your glasses are really half full aren't they!! For God sake stop bloody moaning about everything and everyone, of course we all want to see our team flying high back in the Prem, even then I suspect some of you would be unhappy, probably about the price of pies!!!!

Can we all get a grip on reality, we are lucky compared to most clubs and we are 5....yes 5.... games into a new season, we have 46 games and we won't win them all, we've not been played off the park once, lost by the odd goal which tells me we're not far from getting it right!

If you want to moan constantly, go somewhere else and do it!!!!!!

blues 1 - .... thanks for your second round of abuse - but accept your apology for the first.

Shame some of you have to do it - and make FALSE statements in the process - but that's life, and people, I guess.

If you cannot have anything other than a positive opinion ( when you think otherwise ) to post on here - it defeats the object in my opinion, therefore no further posts from me because of abuse for such.

h32 - methinks thou does protest too much. Haven't you always enjoyed being a bit of a pantomime villain on here, otherwise why engage in discourse with people who have had a pop at you. I enjoy reading your posts but even you must admit that they mostly come out of the drawer marked " not very positive".

h32 I've called you up on some of the idiotic crap you've posted on here before - the others are right - you love to moan about Ipswich. Thats NOT supporting the team. You think that moaning and wanting more makes you more of a fan (because you care!) but it doesnt, youre a cowardly whinger of the highest order, now go find a team that wears yellow to match the colour of the streak down your back! Phil I think its time to have users publicly swear an oath of allegiance to our beloved club. Naaarwich fans would not sign up so easily for this forum if that was in place.

Overall this season apart from Stevenage we've played reasonably well. Little slice of luck not been on our side. Our main problem which is plain as day is an out and out striker to play off McGoldrick. But funds need to be released to get a quality forward in. Will Evans let MM spend? A Billy Sharp or Kevin Doyle would definitely help us. Until we can finish teams off there will a lot more results like this however well we play. Town are still a work in progress after previous managers have done a lot of damage to the club, so keep the faith

No disrespect intended to any respondents on here but the fact is that whatever squad we have we will always 'need/want' a better player here or there. What's wrong with accepting that what we have is what we have to go with? Football squads are always fluid with players coming in and going out. Historically the better teams have settled teams, know the game, respect the opposition and 'love' their teammates. Whether or not our guys are 'united' or not is a moot point. But rather than looking at the squad as 'we need a new striker' or 'we need a new goalkeeper' perhaps we should trust that MM has constructed a group that will really take us forward, and indeed place trust in that group ourselves.

I understand where people are coming from by saying performances are good. However, looking at the table, we have 4 points out of a possible 15. Although I didn't expect maximum points from these fixtures - certainly expected better than 4 and the reason we haven't is because our strikers have scored just ONE goal combined from 6 games (if you include the cup). This is certainly not good enough at any level and must be addressed ASAP.

I admire the optimism of many, but unless we sign a goalscorer, this looks like being a mediocre / poor season yet again. Huddersfield spent a reported £1M on Vaughan in the Summer. Money well spent, as he has scored 8 goals already. IMO we should have been able to spend more than £20k this Summer. Not millions perhaps, but £500k on a decent striker.

p.s. re the ongoing debate about 'moaning' on here - I have said many times before that the purpose of this board is to debate and offer an opinion. That does not mean being either positive or negative all of the time. We will not all agree - that's what forums and boards like this are all about. Yes, performances have been decent - but results have not. That's my opinion. h32 seems to get quite a bit of criticism, but in fairness he DOES generally post win, lose or draw. At the moment, I tend to share peoples frustrations at the results - we should have won yesterday, and would have done if we had a goalscorer.

OK.We should have probably won the last two matches. But the season is long and these things tend to even themselves up.
