McCarthy: Solid Team Performance
Saturday, 28th Sep 2013 18:20

Town boss Mick McCarthy was delighted with double goalscorer David McGoldrick but also with the rest of his team after the Blues’ 2-0 home victory over Brighton.

McCarthy said his team had to work hard to get the better of what he believes was a decent Seagulls team: “We had to beat them today, you don’t get anything easy from them, they’re a good outfit, they’ve got some good players.

“They had a good start, they started better than us, missed a sitter. That’s this league. How many times do I say that? Last week they made saves or we missed chances.

“You’ve got to take chances when they come along and we did with a really good performance from Dids.

“He was excellent today. But I think you could go through the team and we’ve had a good, solid team performance and you have to do to win games.”

The Blues boss says consistent performances throughout the side are important: “TC marks them down and we check the marks every week and if you’ve got a team that’s got seven out of 10 all across the board, you’ve generally got a chance of winning.

“If you’ve got a few fours and fives, that’s when you get beaten. It’s all about marks afterwards, TC’s marks and I have a look at them.

“When you’re saying they played well, I think if you went through the team today you’d be saying the same about everybody.”

McCarthy said Town didn’t have it all their own way and admitted his team might have had a touch of good fortune in the second half: “You’ve got to play well to beat a good team and they are a good side with some good footballers and I thought they posed us a few problems, I thought, early on and they kept going.

“I know they’re screaming about a penalty. I haven’t seen it but personally I think it’s a great decision by the ref.

“I don’t know, I’m taking the Mick, of course, I’ve no idea until I see it. But, by the way, if it is a dubious one, it’s about time we got one anyway. How many deflections have flown in our bleeding net?

“At the time, I said we’d get a slice of luck because it would come around and if that’s our slice of luck, then great. But I won’t know until I’ve seen it.”

Overall, McCarthy was pleased with the performance: “I thought some of our football was nice today. If you can win and entertain fans as well [that’s good], but I’d settle for winning at any club wherever I am.

“There’s this fallacy about having to play sexy football. Bollocks, you’ve got to win. Because playing sexy football and getting beaten sees me driving out the gate with all my stuff, boxes piled up in my car, going back to Bromley with the sack. Win, and then if you can put some little bells and whistles on it, fantastic!”

Brighton boss Oscar Garcia thought his team improved as the game progressed: “McGoldrick was the difference between the two sides. We didn't start too well and that made it hard for us.

“We knew McGoldrick could be a threat and today he showed that he is player who can play at a higher level. We were not good in the first 25 minutes, but after that we improved.”

The Seagulls manager believed his team ought to have been awarded a spotkick: “I'm not sure why the referee did not award a penalty in the second half. It was a clear handball.”

It was a really good team performance, and David McGoldrick was class. His second goal was reminiscent of Marcus Stewart in his prime. The quality of McGoldrick and Cresswell showed through and the rest of the team worked hard to earn a good three points.

Hopefully with the good results and ticket promotions coming up we can see some bigger attendances down at Portman Road. It's a shame the season ticket promotion for Barnsley is limited to four as I could sell many more than that at £10 each.

Great result today, looking good for top 6 Mick! GOALdrick will be our 20+ striker. Happy days!

Love it Mick.
He likes to big his players up and I'm sure that gives them confidence.
He's right that if you play nice football and lose it will inevitably cost the manager his job.

Pretty comfortable, Dids was the difference and looks like he could hit 20 this season. We didn't look in any real danger at all even though their shout for a pen looked pretty solid. Bar Leeds, we seem to only be losing to teams who should finish in the top six, Wigan, QPR and Reading all away. If our home form keeps up (apparently we are joint top scorers at home with Watford). 9th having played three of the favourites away? Good show so far Mick!

@Mark, have to agreed with your post re McGoldrick being compared to Marcus Stewart - he is clever, skilful & has the same finishing ability as Stewart. Well done MM for unearthing a real gem!

Not sure what others think, but i've got everything crossed that MM / TC don't get snipped up by the FAI, cannot believe the difference they have made, so solid. Really enjoying watching the results of the higher teams in the league rather than the relegation battlers!! ITID!!

Jewel got McGoldrick and the best left back in the league. People will be sniffing McGoldrick in January if he continues with this form. Personally don't care about 20 goals ,I would rather him get 10 and midfielders get double figures also.

Jewel got McGoldrick? Not sure he did, think he was banging them in for Cov when he was in charge. but what a bargain he is turning out to be. Sounded like we were in charge for pretty much all the game looking forward to seeing how we do in the next couple of games. Tough but winnable.

Mick's comments were prescient ahead of Tuesday, given what has happened to Nigel Clough. Clough's team have been playing attractive passing football, but have been out-muscled in recent games.

In my opinion, it was a poor decision to dismiss Clough, but Mick's remarks were very apt.

It is possible that the referee didn't award the penalty against Town as seconds before it had cannoned of a Brighton hand/arm and he didn't award a free kick to Town.

much improved approach from town with ball being played through midfield and not being hoofed up to murphy who was made pretty redundant as a result. well done mick for getting the lads playing entertaining football and the crowd loved it. brighton supporters seemed to be kicking off and then our lads escorted out of sir alf, anyone shed any light on that

Bluefeast - McGoldrick signed on loan two months after Jewell had left the club, having been watched by McCarthy and Connor in the November. Credit must go to the latter two for our striker.

Not that Jewell didn't spot some good talent (Cresswell, Chambers, Loach, Hewitt).

Good comment about Jewell spotting some talent - just couldn't get the best from them . One mistake though - Loach must be the worst keeper we've had in years

Just love MM's comments esp packing his car up boxes and stuff if he;s not a winner. As far as i'm concerned he's definitely a winner and long may he stay at PR.
My only issue is getting midfield to score goals as too many are defensive and aren't prepared to even try. Perhaps the answer is to get Ming at LB and move Cressy up at expense of Hyam. Also disappointed with Murphy and Nouble as neither seem to be in right place (unlike Rhodes)
