Young U21 Squad Facing Swans
Monday, 4th Nov 2013 10:58

Jack Marriott, Jordan Adekunle, Jack Doherty and Byron Lawrence are in a young Town U21 squad which faces Swansea City at Stebonheath Park this afternoon (KO 2pm).

Lawrence will be playing his first game since suffering an ankle injury in the U21s defeat at QPR in September. Marriott picked up a minor ankle problem in training last week, but looks likely to start against the Swans.

First-year pro Tom Winter and academy scholars Amir Berkane, Ted Bishop, Matt Clarke and Cory Galvin — who scored for the U18s in their win at Cardiff on Saturday — were also amongst those who made the long trek to Wales last night.

Mark Kennedy’s side are still looking for their first Professional Development League Two win of the season.

Meanwhile, let-back David October made his third appearance for loan club Histon as they lost 2-1 at Stalybridge Celtic in the Skrill North on Saturday. The 18-year-old is still available to play for Town’s U21s while with the Stutes.

Why such a weakened squad? We don't have a 1st team midweek game so you'd think the likes of Wordsworth, Edwards and Tabb would be in need of a game.

To be honest bontcho, I am actually pleased that those players you mention are not included. This team is for competing in the U21 Professional Development League and it should be used solely for this purpose and not giving fringe first teamers game time. How else are our young players going to develop towards a first team spot unless they are given 'regular' match time at this level. We should be building a settled U21 squad that plays together week after week which can build a team cameradary to mirror the first team squad and in so doing learn what it means to be part of a team and not 11 individuals. It is little surprise we have not won a game at this level all season with all the changing of personnel in each game is it!!!

Nouble needs to play these sort of matches, even though he is not good enough for them either.

As much as I admire MM and respect what he has done since he has been here, he seems very reluctant to play the young players. Having seen Nouble play I doubt very much if he would have scored the same number as goals what Marriott has done. I know that some strikers (like Heskey and Murphy) aren't prolific but when the midfield is as sterile of goals and creativity all the strikers have to be able to take their chances.

As fans we don't tend to afford managers the luxury of time but I do think that we would be more forgiving of poor results if the young players were getting experience and getting better. Instead we boo a tired and dare I say it dull (but experienced team).

Also yesterday it was reported that Harry Kane might well come here on loan - I know its was just a rumour but I don't see the point in producing youth players if instead of playing them we just make other clubs young players better by giving them playing time.

Ok, rant over
