Hunt Close to Signing New Deal
Sunday, 15th Dec 2013 20:27

Winger Stephen Hunt has revealed that he is close to putting pen to paper on a longer term deal with the Blues. The 32-year-old joined Town last month on a short-term play-to-be-paid deal which is up in January.

Manager Mick McCarthy told Hunt he wanted him to remain at Portman Road a week ago and has now firmed up that interest by offering him new terms, understood to take the Ireland international to the end of the season.

"I'm on the right road to getting signed soon if all goes well.” he told the Irish Independent. "I'm happy. I don't want to go anywhere else.”

Hunt recalled how his move to the Blues initially came about after a frustrating summer in which a number of potential deals elsewhere had broken down.

"I called Mick, saying I would play for free and would just accept appearance money,” he said.

“He agreed. I arrived here on the Thursday, after a six and a half hour car journey from Ireland, signed on the Friday and played on the Saturday [at Blackpool].”

Hunt, who McCarthy previously took to Wolves from Hull City for £3 million in August 2010, has so far made one start and three sub appearances for Town.

Another step in the right direction! Now just need to get Ebanks-Blake on a contract, and either graham on loan for the rest of the season, or buy a fast skilful right winger, play offs here we come!

What a decent, honest guy Hunty is!

Pay to be paid? That is a brilliant deal. I thought he was excellent when I saw him against Blackburn. He ran out of steam a bit before being taken off, but that was due to the amount of effort he put in to the 70 or so minutes he was on the pitch. Would be a great signing.

Being pedantic, you're not playing for free if you're accepting appearance money ;-) Will be interesting to see if he gets more gametime when he's on a regular contract.

Good news, hasn't featured a lot but his experience will be vital. Been promoted from this league before so he can offer something to the younger players.

I like him, he's class. I have that rare feeling of anticipation when he is running with the ball. He might slide a nice pass through the defence setting someone up. He seems to look up a lot, place his passes, and generally know where everyone is. Skuse seems to be hitting the opposition with half his passes at the moment, so nice to see some quality. We have been lacking quality in midfield recently. Lots of effort and tackles but less attacking passing and running with the ball. Hunt could change that.

Fatboy - He is technically playing for free in that he is not earning a weekly wage like the other players. The only way he is getting paid by town is if he plays, meaning he is getting paid an appearance fee. He is relying solely on playing games to earn money, hence the 'play-to-be-paid'.

Great news btw

Quality player, looked a touch of class, plus great work rate against Blackburn - get him back in the team on Sat. Welcome aboard, Hunty!
