Another Match Off for Veseli's Bury
Tuesday, 28th Jan 2014 11:24

Right-back Freddie Veseli's loan side Bury’s League Two game at Mansfield tonight has been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. The Swiss U21 international’s game time during his initial month with the Shakers has been limited to only three matches with three fixtures having succumbed to the weather or opposition involvement in the FA Cup.

Having signed Frazer Richardson on loan, manager Mick McCarthy is happy for Veseli to remain with the Lancashire club and for fellow right-back Elliott Hewitt to stay with his loan club Gillingham.

Striker Jack Marriott is with Hewitt at the Gills, his loan already runs to the end of the season, and he impressed his boss Peter Taylor with his debut from the bench in Friday’s 2-1 defeat at Brentford.

“He didn’t have long but he did well,” the former England boss told Kent Online. “It would have been nice for him to have scored and, with his first chance, maybe he should have scored but he has hit the target and it was a good save from the goalkeeper. After that, he had another chance that was blocked.

“That’s what he is. That’s how he scores his goals. He is not going to get one from a long way out after beating 300 people, that’s not him.

“He is always in that box, making runs, getting on the shoulders of people and I was expecting a goal to be honest. I am pleased he went on and had a bit of an impact.”

Gillingham’s next game is against Port Vale at the Priestfield Stadium on Saturday, while Bury are scheduled to take on Wycombe Wanderers at home.

It's up to Veseli and Hewitt to have really good loan spells and convince McCarthy that they are the righ-back future, rather than signing Richardson in the summer. At 21 now really is the time for Veseli particularly to push on.
