Town Confirm Williams Loan Signing
Thursday, 27th Feb 2014 16:53

Town have confirmed the signing of Crystal Palace midfielder Jonny Williams on loan until the end of March.

Williams, 20, trained with the Blues squad at Playford Road this morning and will go straight into the squad for Saturday’s home game against Birmingham.

The Wales international, who scored for Palace’s U21s in their 2-1 victory over Town on Monday, will wear the number 25 shirt.

He told the club site he was surprised to be back in Suffolk so soon after Monday's match: “I didn’t expect to be back here so quickly after playing at Ipswich on Monday but I’m really looking forward to my time here.

“[Palace manager] Tony Pulis told me I would be going out on loan after the game against Manchester United last weekend and I think there were two or three clubs interested.

“I spoke to Mick McCarthy after the game on Monday though, and he told me Ipswich were interested and where he sees me playing in the team. He talked about his ambitions and I was excited about the challenge of coming here.

“I know what a great club Ipswich is. I know they have been in the top flight and I know that’s where they want to get back to.”

Born in Kent, 5ft 6in tall Williams came through the youth system at Selhurst Park and made his senior debut in August 2011.

Since then he has gone on to make 27 starts and 37 sub appearances, scoring one goal, but has not started a Premier League game since the Eagles' promotion last summer. In September he suffered an ankle injury which sidelined him for two months.

Highly-rated Williams, who recently signed a new contract with Palace until the summer of 2018, was a constant threat on the left of midfield on Monday and can also operate in the centre and on the right.

Qualifying via his father, Williams has won four full Wales caps having previously played at U17, U19 and U21 levels.

In addition to Town, who are understood to be paying 100 per cent of his wages while he is at Portman Road, Charlton and an unnamed third Championship club were chasing the midfielder.

Get in there! Just what we need, hopefully he performs and gets an extended contract until the end of the season.

Some nice defense splitting passes to 'big Frank' - watch out in the upper tiers. Looks like a good acquisition if only for a month.

First Green was signed, now this lad. Certain young Ipswich midfielders must think that the dice are loaded against them, or that management has decided that they're no good.

Very pleased we've got him. Could be the creative spark we've been craving. Until SEB is fit, would like to see him in a front 6 of:
Skuse & Green CM
Williams CAM
Taylor Murphy Hunt FWD

Good, creative signing. Pretty busy month of games ahead of us so very useful to get him on board. Wouldn't be surprised if the loan gets extended if Palace, Williams and us are happy, can't see him playing for them this season as they have a pretty big squad already. Great signing even if it's only for a month.

Good signing. Adds something different to our midfield. I don't think we will make the playoffs but at least were giving it a go.

Quality signing and instantly looking forward to Saturdays game now. Hope he gets at least a half an hour to show what he can do. We have finally signed a quality footballer rather than just a lad that runs around a lot I.e Green/Tabb. Quality creative player just what we need and in my eyes in his favoured position (top of a midfield 3) he is the best in the championship alongside Hughes and Bryson. Excellent signing

....... all I know is we seem to think there are only two types of player - midfielders and defenders !!

Best not be interested in a Striker - god forbid - not sure MM has even heard of such a position.

Why on earth do we need another midfielder oh well put him at CF McCarthy plays so many players out of position another doesn't matter.
All the people who reckon we will make the playoffs what planet are they on or they haven't watched any matches at PR this season.

One thing worries me and its all our midfielders are dwarfs ,Tabb,Hunt,Green and now Williams,is MM going to become a drag act and dress up as Snow white

Great signing and welcome to Town Johnny.

You will have to play like Messi though to even try and win round the moaners on here!

Now can we please play him in the middle with Skuse and have 2, count them 2 wingers playing against pants Birmingham on Saturday?
Anything less is cowardly, we need to attack teams like Birmingham not flood the midfield and play for a draw

Just watched his interview where he explained the play offs are just two wins away...wait until he reads the wisdom on here where some have already calculated with 40 odd points to play for this season is already over. But don't dare call them 'negative'. Great signing, hopefully SEB will be match fit soon to fill McGoldricks place and push on during March. COYB.

Good signing this! Actually pleased and excited with a signing from Mick and I haven't said that in a while. Lets hope he actually plays him and not do another Jordan Graham. Try not being too attacking though Jonny, you might get dropped! ;-)
