Edwards Nets Winner for Millwall
Tuesday, 8th Apr 2014 23:44

On-loan skipper Carlos Edwards lashed home the winning goal as Millwall beat play-off challengers Wigan 1-0 away.

The 35-year-old Trinidad and Tobago international, who was playing at right-back, was on target in the 22nd minute.

According to the official Millwall site: “[Edwards] picked up the ball in his own half and set off on a mazy run right through the heart of a home defence that stepped away from making any real challenge.

“As he closed down on goal, Edwards spotted [Scott] Carson off his line and lofted the ball over the advancing keeper, his effort taking a little deflection en route to the back of the net.”

Edwards, who is with Millwall until May 3rd, was subbed at half-time with a minor groin problem.

Elsewhere, Elliott Hewitt played the full 90 minutes as Gillingham lost 2-0 at Peterborough, while Jack Marriott was subbed on 71 as Woking drew 2-2 at Grimsby in a bizarre Skrill Premier game in which the first goal came on 84 and the other three in stoppage time.

Hopefully Edwards has done us a favour there. No idea what has happened to Marriott. Gillingham seem to have ruined him and his confidance. Needs to pick it up and start banging in the goals like he was earlier in the season to stand any chance in the championship. Want him to make it soooo badly! Come on Marriott, you can do it.

I know he is now 35 but he is still fit as a flea and could have still offered something to us, but I think mick won't offer him a new deal and my guess is that's why he hasn't featured much, due to triggering the additional year deal

Space to run into, that's what a right back often has. Carlos is a right back and has been since he joined us.

Not necessarily suggesting he could do it in a disciplined McCarthy side mind.

I thought against Blackburn at Portman Road in december he was decent. He scored a goal as well.

I really like Carlos Edwards and I'm very pleased that he scored. I think it's best left at that.

I see Millwall still have to play Bournemouth on the last day of the season. Can you reserve your shooting boots for that one please Carlos?

Top man!!! on paper we have the easiest run in but its starting to look tough Doncaster only 4 points from the drop are going to fight followed by Watford oh why oh why do we play out bogey team at such a crunch time they have nothing to play for and the bogey HAS to come to an end sometime we must hope by the time we have out last two games both Burnley and Sheffield Wednesday have nothing to play for. History says we only need 10 points more for the play offs but another crazy season I think means we need another 13 may be unlucky for the other teams not us COYB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well done Carlos, I think Wigan probably had their minds on the FA Cup coming up - I don't feel their catchable though. Noticed Martin scored as well on saturday, so the nutty results go on!

Robbie, I don't know how Gillingham have ruined Marriot when he's at Woking. Maybe, also, his barren spell confirms he is not ready for Championship football yet, as many 'experts' were advocating.

50years- he was doing fine at woking at his last spell, 11 goals in 11 games, then after Gillingham, everythings gone downhill. Maybe not next season, but hopefully seasons to come. :)
