Williams: We Just Have to Keep Winning
Saturday, 19th Apr 2014 06:00

Will Town have to win all their remaining four league games to gatecrash the play-offs ahead of rivals Reading, Brighton and Bournemouth?

Only time will tell as Mick McCarthy’s men embark on a run-in that sees them visit Watford on today, take on the Cherries at home on Monday, then travel to Burnley before bringing down the curtain on the regular season with a home clash against Sheffield Wednesday.

Good Friday's results helped the Blues' cause with the Royals losing at Wigan and Bournemouth at home to the Owls, while the Seagulls drew at Huddersfield.

On-loan midfielder Jonny Williams had first-hand experience of the situation with Crystal Palace last season, helping the Eagles over the line despite a far-from-convincing last few games and then triumphing in the play-offs to see off Brighton and Watford, both of whom had finished higher in the table.

Speaking ahead of yesterday's games he said: “Last season Leicester finished sixth with 68 points and we’re only four points off that with four still to play so I imagine the points needed to get sixth place this year will be much higher.

“So we are going to have to get more than four points and with some good teams around us, like Brighton, Reading and Bournemouth, I think we just have to keep winning.”

Williams has enjoyed a popular relationship with the Town fans and added: “They have been fantastic. I’ve only just started to realise how far Ipswich is from everywhere. It’s always five or six-hour coach journeys so it’s credit to the fans for turning out at Yeovil, Middlesbrough, Blackburn and other places.

“There’s always been a great turnout and I know it will be the same at Watford from the number of tickets that have been sold. It’s really important to the lads. Even at home the crowds are getting bigger and bigger as we reach the end of the season. It’s been a good relationship between me and them and hopefully it can carry on for a while yet.”

Sometimes an extra player can make a difference. Best loan signing we have had. Possibly better than Gio and Campbell.

He's certainly made a huge difference, not just his direct impact on the ball but also the space that is created for others by having such a direct player, the way it excites the crowd and then spurs on the rest of the team to play with more confidence.

Without Williams we wouldn't be in the play-off picture, no doubt about it. And who would have given us a cat in hell's chance of us keeping him beyond his initial spell? Nobody could foresee the run that Palace are on which is allowing us to keep him and with results going our way again yesterday it really seems like lady luck is on our side right now.
