West Ham to Visit in Pre-Season
Thursday, 8th May 2014 09:51

Town will play Premier League West Ham United in a pre-season friendly at Portman Road on Wednesday 16th July (KO 7.45pm).

The Hammers were last at Town ahead of the 2012/13 season with goals from Michael Chopra (pen), Luke Chambers and Jason Scotland seeing the Blues to a 3-1 victory.

The game could be one of two home friendlies this summer with manager Mick McCarthy keen to play a match at Portman Road the weekend prior to the start of the Championship campaign on Saturday 9th August.

The Blues play their opening friendly in Ireland against Shelbourne at Tolka Park, Dublin on Saturday 12th July with games at Colchester (Wednesday 23rd July) and Gillingham (Saturday 26th July, although not yet confirmed) also on the schedule.

Phil - What did become of the Lazio friendly? Assume it just died a natural death over time?

This is purely and simply about bringing in revenue. I myself am an Essex Blue and have to spend my days surrounded by tasteless yobs. Do we really have to invite them to our stadium for a pre season friendly??? One to miss if you ask me!

Really? On a Wednesday night? Such an awkward time to go see a pre-season game

I work in East London and its surprising how many West Ham fans think that they are a massive club. And that they won the World Cup in 1966.

Is that tw@t of a Gillingham manager still there? The fella who thought we weren't any good when we beat them last pre season?

Souper Jim there are four of us from Clacton who are season tickets holders in the Sir Alf Ramsey stand;so do we constitute an Essex Mob,even though two of us have been following the Town since the days of Sir Tom Finney and Sir Stanley Matthews?
There are many more, even a coachload from Clacton;and just for the record two schools from Colchester and one from Chelmsford are always near the top of the national academic achievement table;so Essex boys and girls are not all shell suit wearing chavs and morons.
Perhaps I am too much of a gentleman as it annoys me when Norwich City are termed 'scum' and other fellow posters are similarly treated by derogatory remarks.
Close season rant over.

I'm from Essex (near to Maldon) - why do you think West Ham fans are largely Essex based? @SouperJim. You could very much say the same for Tottenham and Arsenal as well being an Essex mob, in fact as per a few counties a large mix of teams supported.

.............. meanwhile, I guess MM is already having sleepless nights hatching a plan to defend the point (home and away) that we start with next season - against the 'Northerners of the A140' ........ !!!

Interesting comparisons ahead ! - maybe.

......... don't mention LAZIO to MM - he would have a nose bleed - far too adventurous I'm afraid.

West ham are my 2nd club, why do ignorant town fans tar with the same brush, sometimes I find town unbearable to support. Scared they will outnumber with there huge support.

You anti-Essex supporters were happy to call Loach a local lad and he was from Halstead, Essex. ITFC has a lot of supporters in north Essex. If you alienate our near neighbours from Essex there will be even less in the stadium.

Blueboy, p*** off if you don't like it, or put up and shut up. It is only pre season, for crying out loud

There's Essex and there's Essex. N.E. Essex (including Harwich, Manningtree, Colchester etc.) has always been just as much traditional ITFC territory as anywhere else. Then there's Essex-near-London, which many might like to categorise as "yobland." The fact that the latter has in later years ínvaded the former is due to population movements out of London. I too find it a bit irritating to see yobland shirts in traditional ITFC territory, but I am also pleased to see quite a lot of younger lads (and lasses) still wearing the correct traditional dress. I would guess there are also supporters from yobland not only in N.E. Essex but also in the town of Ipswich (and probably Naarwich too). But don't try to drive a wedge between Essex and Suffolk-based supporters. We are all part of the same (originally agriculturally-based, but now mixed) population. By the way, Naarwich is a fine East Anglian city: it's just a pity about their "football " team. COYB.
