Town and Charlton Linked With Koren
Friday, 23rd May 2014 09:44

Town and Charlton Athletic are reported to be chasing out-of-contract Hull City midfielder Robert Koren.

According to The Sun, the two clubs are fighting it out for 33-year-old Slovenian international Koren’s signature, Hull having told him he will not be offered new terms. Brighton and Millwall have previously been linked.

Koren, who is said to be keen to stay in England, started his career with Dravograd and Celje in his home country before moving on to Norwegian side Lillestrom in 2004.

Three years later 5ft 9in tall Koren joined West Brom before moving on to Hull City in the summer of 2010 on a free transfer.

While at the KC Stadium he made 133 starts and 18 sub appearances, scoring 29 goals, and latterly was club captain.

During 2013/14 his involvement was limited to 13 starts and 13 sub appearances and he scored three times.

Capped 61 times by Slovenia, scoring five goals, Koren skippered his country at the 2010 World Cup, starting all three of their games and netted the winning goal in the 1-0 victory over Algeria.

Good player, and on the right deal would be a very good acquisition. 1yr contract, with option of 2nd year after a certain amount of games played.

If this had been 3 or 4 years ago I'd be bouncing around the room. Would probably take him on small wages as he's a player with a creative link between midfield and attack that we've been lacking. Just unsure whether a 33 year old can handle the demand of Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday football.

Love how people think a 33 year old can't hack it.

Think of these people at age 33
Bradley Wiggins
Chris Hoy
Michael Johnson
Michael Jordan (the second coming)
I'm sure there are hundreds more, just depends on the individual, Giggs at 33? ? ? !

I can only assume those commenting are the 'olds' who when they were younger players didn't look after themselves to the degree they do today or the 'youngs' who see us 33 year olds as past it.

I've mentioned it before on here, but i'm fitter and faster than all of those in their 20's I play against (although I take a bit longer to recover from knocks - not that i'd ever admit it!)

Always rated this guy at Championship level. As long as he's fit and doesn't break the wage budget, I'd like to see us go for it.

No bigger fool than an old fool Dirtyboy! I too played football and when I got over 30 was always getting muscle strains that were taking longer to recover. You just can not recover as quick when you are over 33 and playing twice a week your likely to get more strains, injury's occur, sorry. The brain is just as fit however!
I would prefer us to be looking at players just a bit younger.

Surely you need experience and youth mixed together it's not often a young team keep it together we all know what we need but it's money which only the teams breaking the rules can do rules are rules and the punishment should fit the crime I.e points deducted retrospectively and removed from the league like Peterborough were years ago for illegal payments

Well would defo have him in the midfield than the likes of green etc. Can still do a good job in the championship and he knows were the goal is

dirtyboy - You're quite right. I'm over 30 and it takes me longer to recover from your modesty.

Played in several football teams over the year up until I was 40. Never once played in an over 30's team. So when I see people questioning wether a 33 year old can make it in the vhampionship you have laugh shake your head and say, "Kids today!"

33 is not old for a championship player , we missed an experienced player who could shut down a game last season by keeping the ball and wanting the pass , youth and naivety cost us too many leads from winning positions

A few years ago he'd have been worth taking but depends what he's like now

If you can't afford to buy quality (& we can't!) then picking up quality and experience on a free has got to be a great bit of business?! A proven Champ player with extensive international experience who scores goals and has been promoted from this league with 2 different clubs. Get him in MM

Fatboy added 16:12 - May 23
If he does sign, I believe he'd be the only non-UK/Ireland player in our squad (not counting Tommy Smith, who was born in Macclesfield).

@Fatboy: Almost right. Quick glance at the squad list on Wikipedia shows that with Edwards gone, Veseli (Swiss) is now the only one left.
