Blues Amongst Clubs Linked With Bury Keeper
Friday, 6th Jun 2014 09:14

Town are amongst a number of clubs reported to be eyeing Bury keeper Reice Charles-Cook, who has turned down a new contract with the Shakers.

According to Sky Sports, the Blues, Crystal Palace, Bolton and Middlesbrough are amongst the sides understood to be monitoring the 20-year-old’s situation.

His agent Lee Payne confirmed that his player was looking for a new club: "Reice decided to move on from Bury.

"He had a good time there, and will always be grateful to David Flitcroft for giving him his Football League debut and for offering him a new contract, but he wants to explore other options.

"A lot of people know how talented Reice is and we now have to decide between us what the next step will be."

Charles-Cook joined the League Two side following his release by Arsenal a year ago and made one start and one sub appearance during March, spending the rest of the season on the bench. While with the Gunners, where he was unable to break into the first-team squad, the Londoner spent a short spell on loan at Chelmsford.

With Scott Loach moving to Rotherham yesterday, Town are certainly in the market for another keeper this summer, however, manager Mick McCarthy is likely to be looking for someone more experienced than Charles-Cook to compete with current first choice Dean Gerken.

Aside from Gerken, 18-year-old Michael Crowe, who is yet to play a first-team game, is the most senior keeper at the club. McCarthy is unlikely to promote the London-born, Norway-raised Wales U19 international to second-choice next season and may look to send him out on loan to gain senior experience.

McCarthy and keeper-coach Malcolm Webster were both spotted running the rule over Colchester’s Town-supporting number one Sam Walker at various times during 2013/14, although a move for the 22-year-old, who having signed an 18-month deal when he joined the U’s from Chelsea in January would command a fee, is unlikely unless the Blues’ transfer budget is boosted by the sale of Aaron Cresswell or another current player.

Amongst the other keepers who may be on McCarthy and Webster’s list of potential signings is former loanee Bartosz Bialkowski.

The Pole, who was understood to have been interesting the Blues last summer, has said he will leave Notts County during the close season, despite having a year left on his contract.

The 26-year-old recently told the Polish media that he is close to a move to a Championship club — believed to be Brighton — but the Magpies are yet to receive an offer for him.

Bialkowski spent a short spell on loan with the Blues in 2009 without making a first-team appearance and was coached by Webster during their time together at Southampton. As with Walker, Town are unlikely to make a move unless their summer budget has received an injection from a sale.

Elsewhere, academy midfielder Monty Patterson is on the bench as the New Zealand U20s take on Brazil in their second game at the Panda Cup in China this morning. The 17-year-old, who starts a two-year scholarship this summer, came on as a 66th minute sub as the http://www.twtd.co.uk/ipswich-town-news/25269/patterson-on-as-sub-in-defeat>Juni All Whites lost 1-0 to the hosts in their opening game on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Simon Milton, Alan Lee and the rest of TeamITFC have started their London to Amsterdam charity cycle ride. You can follow their progress via Milton’s Twitter account.

Almunia, kuzsack and westwood are all available on a free and would be stand out number 1's which is what we need

Yes Jim but all rather costly wages wise i suspect.

Yea that's what I thought, but we have never really payed decent terms, hence why we lost out on numerous targets. Austin being a prime example. One things for sure, we need a better first choice than gerken, coz for every forest away there was a QPR at home, or milwall away. Made some costly mistakes along the way

To go up in this league we need a top keeper that doesn't cost you points , haven't had that for a number of years .
Surely we can afford wages for the keepers Jimmys listed above if no fee ?

Jimmy86 - he has made some mistakes, although I think his consistency has improved a lot as the season has progressed and I would be happy with a new loach for next season as no.2.

I think he is good. Sign him up. As for the afromentioned keepers, Westwood would be the only one. I would take. Cheaper wages and anyway, Kuszcak makes more mistakes than Gerken.

Don't forget that Kuszczak turned us down for Brighton, who now wish they never had him. He is a definite no.

Ipswich121 gerken has done well on occasions but always has a mistake in him im afraid and in my opinion we need a new number 1, better than gerken, if we want to kick on next season

A lot of people discussing the more well known keepers that we could have but not much being said about the player linked in this story. I don't know anything of him myself but he's young and sounds highly sought after, and would certainly be a cheaper option than the others. Surely Aaron Cresswell is evidence enough that such players are worth serious consideration, not to mention it's similar origins from which Joe Hart was unearthed.

Think your a bit harsh on Gerks Jim! yes he has made mistakes all players keepers included make mistakes,Westwood is a good keeper but his mistakes at Sunderland have cost him. He was well thought of a year or two ago but i belive his form has dipped, maybe its Loach all over again?

Agree with Wickets, Jimmy you keep saying Gerks made more mistakes last season but then he also played rather more games. I have no mistake to game ratio statistics I don't have that many howlers jumping out in my mind. I agree he not the best keeper in the championship but I do think he's solid and reliable and a great shot stopper, I just wish his distribution was better. I think he does flap at crosses sometimes too but none the less there are worse keepers in the championship too. I don't think we are getting a new no 1, but I have no issues with Gerks starting next season. Given how many people commented about expensive prem flops on the summer recruitment article I find it amusing that there seems little excitement at this chaps arrival. I know nothing about him but he's young, sort after and hungry, Isnt this the type of player most of this forum keeps demanding?

Thats prospective arrival of course. Probably nonsense paper talk?

I still think we need a new number one. An experienced keeper is what we need.

Jimmy86 added 12:39 - Jun 6
He's a good keeper, but lets be honest, there isn't much in it between loachand gerken. They both good shot stoppers, which at this level they should be anyway. Loach's distribution is better than gerken, gerken's command of his area and coming off his line is marginally better than loach. For me they were no worse or no better than one another.

Presumably Bury would get a fee for Charles-Cook decided by tribunal? If he is so highly rated why did he only make two appearaces in League Two? I know he's young, but I'd hope to sign someone with more experience than that even if he is 20.

We are now going to be linked with every keeper available and when Cresswell moves on we will be linked with every leftback going etc etc it's silly season and I actually like it.

RegencyBlue added 14:21 - Jun 6
We will only be after free transfers unfortunately until Cresswell is sold and even then I suspect the amount made available to MM will be small, if indeed Evans puts any money his way.

I'm all for being careful with money but building a side capable of promotion out of free transfers and loans is going to be a big ask! Obviously spending vast amounts of money didnt work for us either but there has to be a middle way surely!

How about going after Speroni, just released from Palace I believe.
Appreciate he is 35 but proven at Championship level and judging by how well he was respected at Selhurst Park he must have a good attitude too.

Brian Clough once said that when you build a team you start with the keeper

I hate this time of year, so many made up paper stories! I doubt if we will sign anyone before training starts in July and guess they will only be players out of contract and free?

Mr Evans get your money out for mick to spend.
Keep getting freebee's all the time is garbage.
How come Keane and Jewell had a good kitty to spend, plus mick would spend it wisely.
New signings should be a keeper, a Rb & Lb if cresswell leaves.
Another left winger, att midfielder as in Williams & a striker who can score coming off the bench, we have are main 2 forwards in Murphy & mcgoldrick.
Give mick 4 million he'll sort out the team.
Wishful thinking though!! :-)
