Cresswell at West Ham for Medical
Thursday, 3rd Jul 2014 13:33

Town left-back Aaron Cresswell is reportedly undergoing a medical at West Ham United.

Rumours that Cresswell had missed training at Playford Road and was having a medical with the Hammers surfaced online early this afternoon and then was subsequently reported by Sky Sports.

West Ham were amongst the clubs keeping tabs on 24-year-old Cresswell throughout the 2013/14 campaign and were linked with a possible move by their local press yesterday.

The Hammers are understood to have turned to Cresswell, having had an offer for Norwich's Martin Olsson turned down.

Speaking on Monday, manager Mick McCarthy confirmed that he wouldn’t stand in the way of Cresswell if an offer came in from a Premier League side: “I said last season, and my stance hasn’t changed, Cressy got all the plaudits for being the best left-back in the league and if at some stage somebody comes in and the deal’s right, it becomes untenable because [in those circumstances] the player wants to go. It’s not that we want to sell him but I might be able to reinvest if that’s the case.

“I don’t want to sell him but he himself is really ambitious and if the right deal comes along, who knows, it may have to happen.

“And if it does, I’ll shake his hand, thank him for all that he’s done and I’ll crack on and get somebody else. That’s the way it happens.”

Cresswell's former club Tranmere Rovers are entitled to 20 per cent of the profit the Blues would make on the £420,000 they paid for him following his summer 2011 switch to Portman Road.

A Football League tribunal set a compensation figure of an initial £240,000 plus milestone clauses, with only a £100,000 payment on promotion to the Premier League not triggered.

Cresswell, named in the Championship Team of Year for 2013/14, has made 138 appearances for Town, all starts, scoring seven goals.

Coincidentally, West Ham are at Portman Road for a pre-season friendly on Wednesday 16th July (KO 7.45pm).

The joys of being a mid-table Championship club... we cant hold onto anything anymore...

I just hope we don't have a poorer season or this will be one of the reasons people will cite as a reason not to renew season tickets or go to the games.

Any idea on the sum they're paying??? Time will tell if this is a good move for Cresswell as they did struggle at times last season. Obviously knew this was going to come sooner or later so not too surprised, but hopefully this means some of the money is invested for Mick to sign some players not on frees (depending on the fee we receive for Cresswell).

If he does sign it would be nice if he could take a bow at the friendly on the 16th.

If Luke Shaw is worth £30m, we should be looking for £6m minimum

ITFC_Essex: What a disrespectful comment from a so called town fan, you should be ashamed of yourself!

Doesn't surprise me, if he does go for a decent amount then I trust Mick to spend the money well on some decent, young, and hungry players.

Good, the club clearly wants him to go to get the transfer fee.

Be prepared for the fee being vastly lower than we might expect. We'll probably end up with under £2M once Tranmere are paid their share. Of course, it'll probably be an "undisclosed fee".

Gutted - it feels a bit like the hot girl we've all been punching above our weight with has finally and enevitably dumped us.

Not surprised, hes a quality player and I hope he does fantastically in the PL - and I hope MM gets the cash to re-invest in 2 or 3 quality players. All the best Aaron

Hay ho. As long as MM is given all the money to spend in the transfer market, probably a good thing. Mings looks more than capable. £3-4M in the transfer market, spent wisely, could make all the difference to us this season.

Inevitably was going to happen. Im optimistic of a decent transfer fee knowing West Hams recent dealings though..

Good luck Aaron for the future, one of a limited number of positives in towns very recent history but the money will go a long way to shaping for a promotion push next season

I know we can't stand in the way, but West Ham sounds rather disapointing to me...

Good time to sell. Better than waiting until late August for the inevitable to happen and making some last minute panick signings. Mick will hoopefully be given the funds to reinvest in a solid first choice keeper and a creative centre-mid. Mings can fill the LB role adequatly enough as long as their is better support from midfield.

Cresswells first season here was his best imo. I welcome the money we will be getting gor him snd I dont think we will miss him as much as some fear.

Good Luck Cressie and thanks. But the move will benefit all parties .

Cambonbleu- not only does it feel like we - the 'nice guy' - have been dumped but that said hot girl has left us for the bad boy with a history of violence and substance abuse with a fancy car

All the best Cressy, show the big boys what you can do

No complaints if the fee is credible

£4m has been mentioned that would mean £716,000 going to Tranmere and -£3,284,000 to Town. Also the changes in FFP mean Town need to raise £2m to keep within the fair play rules (trading loss limit reduction) so it would mean a transfer/wages kitty of just over £1m. In real terms this means we could probably afford either one fee of around £400-500k or a slightly larger squad with a couple more free transfers although that would also mean another sale would be needed next year to be sustainable.

It's also because accountants can do the maths and realise that teams not on parachute money need to sell so can limit transfer prices. It's a sad fact of the modern game that money goes to money and other teams are comparably frozen out.

Always hated losing good players, but it's done so we need to make the money (you would hope above £5m) really count....and Mick is as good as anyone at doing that. Thanks Aaron for all that you've done. Real shame to see you go.
