Cresswell Expected to Complete Move Before Weekend
Thursday, 3rd Jul 2014 13:56

Town left-back Aaron Cresswell is undergoing a medical at West Ham United and is expected to complete a move to the Hammers later today or tomorrow.

Rumours that Cresswell had missed training at Playford Road and was having a medical with the Hammers surfaced early this afternoon.

Firm details of the agreed fee - which will almost certainly prove to be officially undisclosed - have yet to emerge, however, London sources are reporting that the deal is worth almost £4 million, a figure which may include some add-ons. It’s understood that the Blues have previously turned down other offers for the 24-year-old, with reports elsewhere claiming Fulham were amongst those to make a bid.

West Ham were amongst the clubs keeping tabs on Cresswell throughout the 2013/14 campaign and were linked with a possible move by their local press yesterday.

The Hammers are understood to have turned their attention to Cresswell, having had an offer for Norwich's Martin Olsson turned down.

Speaking on Monday, manager Mick McCarthy confirmed that he wouldn’t stand in the way of Cresswell if an offer came in from a Premier League side: “I said last season, and my stance hasn’t changed, Cressy got all the plaudits for being the best left-back in the league and if at some stage somebody comes in and the deal’s right, it becomes untenable because [in those circumstances] the player wants to go. It’s not that we want to sell him but I might be able to reinvest if that’s the case.

“I don’t want to sell him but he himself is really ambitious and if the right deal comes along, who knows, it may have to happen.

“And if it does, I’ll shake his hand, thank him for all that he’s done and I’ll crack on and get somebody else. That’s the way it happens.”

McCarthy has previously said that he will look to second-choice left-back Tyrone Mings to replace Cresswell, while the fee is likely to go towards strengthening the squad.

Cresswell's former club Tranmere Rovers are entitled to 20 per cent of the profit the Blues would make on the £420,000 they paid for him following his summer 2011 switch to Portman Road.

A Football League tribunal set a compensation figure of an initial £240,000 plus milestone clauses, with only a £100,000 payment on promotion to the Premier League not triggered.

Cresswell, named in the Championship Team of Year for 2013/14, has made 138 appearances for Town, all starts, scoring seven goals.

Coincidentally, West Ham are at Portman Road for their first friendly of pre-season on Wednesday 16th July (KO 7.45pm).

Really sad to see this. I'd be happy if he went to club renowned for playing good football, however i can't see him progressing under Big Sam. Good luck to him though, served us well the past few seasons.

Shame, but at least we can use the money to good effect with Mick in charge

Let's play guess the fee. I'll say £2.6M with £0.6M going to Tranmere.

I really hope ME will invest the entire fee received, plus wages saved, back into the playing squad. I'm personally not sure west ham and their style of play is right for Cresswell, but it's his call. Would have thought Southampton were a miles better option, but perhaps they no longer want him. The fee west ham were rumoured to be paying originally was just £1.5M. I hope it's more than that!

I wish Cresswell well!

Be nice if he could take a bow on the 16th.
Good luck Aaron, thanks for the memories.

And just as I was on a high from the other signings. S'pose it had to happen after being in the shop window for so long.

Although we will miss him, this has been inevitable for a while now, and it might as well happen sooner rather than later to allow MM more time to reinvest the profits into new signings. Preferably I'd like to see him bring in another left back rather than play Mings there.

Good luck to Cresswell, West Ham's an interesting choice for him. Should get a lot of praise for his deliveries, but Big Sam seems to favor big full backs, e.g. Guy Demel.

Good luck Aaron. Deserves to play in the Premier League. Just hoping that we've agreed a big fee and not just taken the first bid that came in as 20% goes straight to Tranmere. Hopefully Mick will be given the funds and makes two or three top signings to strengthen the squad!

Im glad its happened now and not the after the start of the season, gives MM time to reinvest and integrate new players. All the best Cresswell its been a pleasure watching!

Can see him dropping in perfect crosses for Carroll, so I suppose it makes sense. Good luck to him.
Anything below €3.5m would be disappointing & represent poor negotiation, in my view.

Absolutely gutted about this :( has been such a consistent performer for us during his time here. Surprised he is going to West Ham, don't think he will develop as quickly as he would compared to somewhere like Southampton.

As for the fee, anything less than 4 million would be very disappointing. 800k of that would go to Tranmere so I think McCarthy would get 1.5 or 2 million to sign players. I don't think Mings is ready to start at left back. We will miss Cresswell defensively and going forward, provides good deliveries at set pieces and loads of assists.

Also hope we have a percentage sell on percentage!

Thought he could have done better than West Ham but hopefully he'll have a great season in the premier league. Sad to see him go but hopefully we can use the money (which I assume will be undisclosed) to invest in quality in the team.

Good luck to him, he must make the most of the opportunity, I think Mings will step up to the plate

Inevitable that this sage would end eventually but it is news I've been dreading for what seems like an age now. Have got a lot of confidence in Mings to be the next best left back in the Championship, but still this hurts. An Ipswich team without Cressie bouncing down the wing? Hard to imagine.

West ham? Thats a side ways move he'll end up back in the championship next season. And as for the figure we all know its gonna be low as ipswich always cave in too early. Oh well move on George elokobi is a free agent mick

While always disappointing to lose a good player, this may be a blessing in disguise. Should this materialise there is a real opportunity for Mings to flourish and there will be some money for MM to spend on a couple of players including a box to box midfielder who can set-up and score goals.
Well done and good luck Cressy...you have earned this opportunity to play with the big boys. And if Suarez stays with Liverpool you had better wear some armour!

Just wondering if the deal includes Henderson on loan or permanent!

One thing that is likely Wet Spam got a bargain and our Club got screwed. Hope it is not so but MM has almost begged for someone to come and buy him.

Look at the positives bar giving away the penalty against Donny Mings played an amazing game that day, he's only 20 4 years younger than Cresswell, he will get experience, Mick will look to get someone to push Mings to the limit, it's not excellent I think we would all like to see Cresswell live out a bit more at Portman Road but if you look at the positives, 2 mil at least and Mick will sign someone maybe not as good for a free transfer 2 mil gained experience for Mings gained, and trust he will fail at West Ham, I called England going out in the group stage, I am calling Cresswell will not perform like we expect against West Ham, wish him all the best all the same
