Evans: I've Had Offers for Town
Thursday, 14th Aug 2014 17:21

Town owner Marcus Evans has revealed that he gets “offers all the time” from parties interested in buying the Blues.

"There are always people making offers for football clubs and I get offers all the time," he told BBC Radio Suffolk.

"Therefore, if I was interested in not being involved in the club, I would have had ample opportunity in much more difficult periods to become a season ticket holder rather than the person who has to write the cheques out to support the whole club.”

Evans was speaking to Mark Murphy in a wider interview which will be featured on Friday’s BBC Radio Suffolk Breakfast Show (from 7am) and also on Saturday’s Life’s a Pitch (12pm-2pm).

However, as with the Blues’ owner’s previous contacts with the media, the interview was given with the agreement that the audio would not be broadcast.

The 50-year-old owner also admits that he thought getting Town into the Premier League would be an easier job when he completed his takeover towards the end of 2007: ”When I first bought the club I did expect it to happen far easier.

"Those people who sold the club did a very good selling job in persuading me that a little bit of extra money and one or two extra players was all that was needed.

"One of the previous managers, Joe Royle, was always quoted to me by people at the club. He always said if we just had one or two extra players we were definitely going to get promoted.

"I've now found out that every manager says that. So that is something that I did think was going to be easier."

I've got a lot of time for Joe Royle. When he made the comment about £2 million being the difference between staying in the division and getting promoted he was absolutely right. But that was under his leadership.

When Jim took over Town didn't have two ha'pennies to scrape together, which is why we didn't get Francis Jeffers from Blackburn, but Jim made the best of a bad job.

After Evans took over Jim got given a large budget which he largely wasted. Evans wanted immediate success so he binned Jim and got Keane which unfortunately was a massive disaster. Keane spent ridiculous sums of money on very average players and allowed Jordan Rhodes to leave for a pittance.

Jewell didn't investigate players' backgrounds which is why we ended up with characters with off field problems like Bullard, Taylor and Chopra. His managership was a disaster like Keane's.

McCarthy's teams may be boring but he doesn't waste money and he gets results.

Lots of people criticise Sheepshanks but one thing that you can never take away from him is that he is a true blue Town supporter. I feel that Marcus Evans probably bought Town to make a quick profit but is now has the same mindset as Sheepy and the rest of us supporters.

I'm not convinced that everybody was 'over the moon' about Keane's appointment, but to be fair it did give the town a lift for a short while - as for Jewell, a very mixed record before arriving at Portman rd and in retrospect a risky appointment. McCarthy is a much steadier influence and appears to me to be getting the best out of a limited budget. Sadly I think the league positions, broadly speaking, reflect the money available for wages and transfers and therefore I feel that we have reached our maximum position, unless we are really fortunate and can achieve similar success to Burnley.

'we are a stable club' just as a patient in a coma is stable, so let's stop kidding ourselves as that is about the best description of us, only we are slowly slipping away in terms of squad, emerging youth, income and season ticket sales

and we are supposed to be grateful !

I have it on good authority (directly from someone closely connected to the boardroom who used to work at town, and who now works for the FA) that Evans has been looking to sell the club for the last few years... But cannot find a buyer. He won't put anymore money in regardless of how the club are trying to stick to FFP

Mark I agree with most of your comments and I know I am not going to be overly popular with backing Jewell but I honestly think Paul Jewell had no chance. Marcus made the massive mistake of appointing Clegg who wanted Jim out and Keane in. Roy Keane set our club back so many years even had Mick taken over there he would of failed. Mick came in at the right time Paul had worked hard to rebuild a foundation which Mick has fantastically built on he has turned us from relegation fodder to Play Off contenders Marcus made a massive mistake of taking on CLegg and then thinking he knew what he was talking about. Thankfully he now has seen sense and built a top to bottom Management structure which will get us up and hopefully will keep us up for many years. COYB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
