McCarthy: Style Will Suit Sammon
Monday, 18th Aug 2014 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy believes that new loan signing Conor Sammon will score more regularly for the Blues with Town’s style of play suiting the Irish international. The 27-year-old joined from Derby until the end of the season on Friday and made his debut as a late sub at Reading on Saturday.

Sammon’s record of scoring only 13 goals in 49 starts and 40 sub appearances in two years with the Rams and prior to that once for Wigan in 10 starts and 24 games from the bench has come under scrutiny since his signing.

The Dubliner’s most prolific period in British football came between August 2008 and January 2011 when he netted 25 goals in 53 starts and 23 sub appearances for SPL side Kilmarnock following his move from the League of Ireland.

“I think the way we play will suit him and I think he’ll get goals with us,” McCarthy said. “I think at Derby it’s different, you’ve got your man up front [Chris Martin] who plays with his back to goal better. He’s better than Conor at that, but he’ll give us plenty, that’s for sure.”

The Town manager says he’s a long-time admirer of Sammon, who he revealed former boss Paul Jewell tried to bring to Portman Road during his time in charge.

“He is somebody I’ve liked,” he added. “I guess you don’t sign somebody who you just see the week before and say ‘I’ll sign him’.

“There’s always got to be a mutual respect or like of what he does and what he brings to the team.

“I think he brings a lot, and he’s a really good person as well, which fits into our squad. I’m pleased to have got him.

“Before me I think Paul was looking at him. So, he’s finally ended up here. Let’s hope it’s a success for us.”

Sammon has a reputation for not giving opposition defenders a moment’s rest during games, an approach McCarthy likes to see throughout his teams.

“I like players who don’t give their opponent any peace at all, whether that’s a full-back, a centre-half, a midfield player or a winger or a striker,” he continued. “That’s part of the game. What’s not to like about that?”

He played down the suggestion that Paul Taylor’s move to Rotherham on a half-season loan had freed up the resources to allow the move for Sammon: “I don’t see why you have to put it down to freeing up the cash, there’s a different story there.

“One’s gone out and Conor’s come in and he will be a good player for us. I’m delighted to have got him.”

I'm waiting for them to bedsitfc, seems like every headline they moan about everything. What this club needs is support not moaners.

Bedsit & Superkevin : Please don't dismiss the genuine views of genuine supporters, who love this club, just because they might see some aspect of play, transfer or line differently to you.
The expression "so called fans" in particular is highly offensive & downright lazy. Who are you to label otherz, who you know nothing about, in that way?
I have been a big supporter of Mick's appointment & most of what he has done in making the club a stable outfit and in particular sorting out the defence, on a shoestring budget and I have commented to that affect on numerous occasions. I have been hugely positive about many signings, such as Berra (before everyone recognised hos good he was), McGoldrick, Murphy, Anderson - who I have been saying will have a good season for us this season since the start of the year - & many others.
However, I am not a fan of Sammon coming to us, particularly because of the other forwards we currently have at the club - if Nouble were to go it would make it somewhat easier to accept - as I don't believe that he is the type of player we need up front at the moment. I have made that point on here, giving my reasons why, & been lumped in as a moaner & "so called fan" by people who fail to even consider the reams of positive comments I have made at other times & most importantly, the 36 years of unwavering love & support I have given the club ever day from first thing in the morning to pretty much last thing when my head hits the pillow at night.
I will always get behind the club, & indeed the players on the pitch, whether I was in favour of their signing or not, but that does not mean that I can't express my opinion on a forum, set up for that very purpose, when I disagree or feel we are taking the wrong option at times.

Well said Len. I don't think you need to worry about Nouble though, looks like his days here are numbered.

Sammon is a good pro with the right attitude and a fantastic work rate. He'll fit in perfectly here. I would also rather he was a technically gifted player with a top goal scoring record, but we have to be realistic. If he had all those attributes, Derby would be hanging on to him.

Well said Len. Having an opinion that differs from others' points of view is not a hanging offence and, as you say, that is what this forum is all about - discussion.

Bedsitfc, what you have actually done is moaned about the moaners, rather than comment on the subject matter at all. You have made a sweeping generalisation which catches many on this site who ARE true supporters even if they do have a moan and groan from time to time.

Anyway, back to the topic of the thread... for me, this isn't the most exciting signing but I hope that it proves to be a good one.

I assume that we do still look at the cream of the lower leagues as there must be some great potential around somewhere which MM and TC would be able to nurture and develop.

Len - I see what you are saying but I use the phrase "so called supporters" because if you look up the meaning of support you won't see the word negative it means "get behind" "back up" "offer assistance" people that put the club down can call them self's fan's because they ain't supporting.
I can accept people having a go on here but dislike it as it filters back to the club but in our stadium it should be nothing but SUPPORT.

Let's face it sammon might not work out for us but every time he puts on our shirt I will back him and try to give him confidence.

Do I think he is a good signing? Yes I do, but I think he thrives on service from wide positions

Social media seems to bring out the best and sadly the worst in some people! People who wouldn't normally say 'Boo to a Goose' are emboldened and behave in a way they wouldn't normally.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but this is a fans forum and we should at least be respectful to each other even if we don't agree!!

On the subject of Sammon the jury is out for me, but a good honest hard working player. Hope he does well.

He always played really well against us and not many forwards in this league get the better of our defence. He is far better than people realise a real team player and Mr assist. Good signing.

bedsitfc I agree with you that negativity and criticism from the stands is counter-productive and is not being a "supporter". I don't think we have too much of that at Portman Road however and certainly not in the north stand. Frank Nouble case in point, everyone can see he is crap but we applaud his work rate and get behind him anyway while he is on the pitch.

As others have said, TWTD is about opinions and everyone is entitled to theirs. So long as they are reasoned rather than moronic one-liners...

The True Path is straight and narrow: constructive criticism on TWTD if you feel inclined, but total support inside PR. It's as simple as that. Some, however, deviate from the True Path and apply the former (and it's not usually very constructive either) in connection with the latter. COYB!
