Tabb Hoping History Doesn't Repeat Itself

Jay Tabb is praying history does not repeat itself when Town travel north for tonight's live-on-Sky game at Wigan.

Firstly, the experienced midfielder was an unused substitute in his side’s 2-0 defeat, and secondly it was a scoreline that did not accurately reflect the teams’ respective displays.

Tabb, 30, recalled: “We went there and played really well. It was early in the season and I remember we gave away a bit of a silly goal at the end. It was never a 2-0 match.

"Wigan have had a little bit of a tricky run of late so it might be a good time to play them. They are a good side with a really good manager and a strong squad so it’s going to be very tough for us, although it’s nice to have an extra few days before the game to make sure we can recover well and go there fully prepared.

"It’s going to be a long trip up north on Sunday night but I’m sure we’ll be ready on Monday come the game and we’ll see what happens.

“It’s usually Premiership games that are on Monday nights and it changes your preparation. We always train on the two days prior to a game so that will be Saturday and Sunday and the manager has given us a bit of time off before then to rest our legs and make sure we come back ready to go again.

"You just have to adjust in terms of the days you train but come Monday we’ll be ready.”

Tabb, who has started all seven Championship games so far this season, also reflected on the growing competition for midfield places following the recent capture of Town old boy Darren Ambrose on a short-term deal and the anticipated return of injured duo Stephen Hunt and Cameron Stewart.

He added: “The competition is massive at the moment. At one stage it might have looked as if we had quite a small squad but that’s not the case now. It’s a good squad, not only in terms of numbers but healthy competition in every department.

“There are another two youngsters coming through as well. They have been training with us and they will be pushing us all the way for our places as well. We all know you need that to be successful.

“It was a real shame that Cameron got injured in pre-season because he’s a different type of winger to what we’ve got at the moment. The same with Stephen Hunt as well but at least they are both on their way back and hungry to get involved at first team level as soon as they can.

“I’m sure the manager is delighted with that and I think that as a squad of players as well we know it’s good to have the competition, even if you always know you are being pushed for your own place. It’s a good position to be in, knowing that there are so many different options.”
