Town on Hot Food Policy
Monday, 27th Oct 2014 18:22

Town have outlined why fans were prevented from entering Portman Road with burgers and hot dogs purchased from vendors outside the ground prior to Saturday’s match against Huddersfield.

Supporters on the TWTD forum and elsewhere on social media commented on what appeared to be a new club policy.

However, club media manager Steve Pearce said in a statement: “It’s not a new policy but it is one that the club have let lapse over recent times.

“It is 32 hours of work for our cleaning staff just to pick up litter around the stadium after a match and this is increasing.

“We have also noticed an increase in people bringing hot food into the ground so we will be asking supporters who purchase hot food and drink from outside the stadium to consume it before entering.

“This falls in line with other football clubs and other sports up and down the country. There are also food safety issues that we have to be mindful of.”

Same old crap from our once great club who used to care about the fans.
Next we wont be able to enter without some official club merchandise on and a programme in our hands. I take my own food and drink in in my pockets if im hungry. Its expensive enough without paying rip off prices for pigswill quality food

The choice for a non meat eater is appalling , basically chips, chips or hmmm chips and they are usually cold, I see no reason why I should not be able to bring food into the ground that I can eat. I have been to many ground and have noticed that I can get pizza or fish at many grounds, wise up and treat your supporters with more consideration ITFC.

Thought for a while now the club need to be doing more to provide overall matchday experience and catering very much part of that. A number of American sports clubs take view that as they can't control their primary product ie what goes on during the game they therefore work twice as hard on the off field experience. Quite apart from improving the standards lots of other things could be done like real ale promo's, seasonal offerings - plenty of opportunity for this at Christmas etc, free pint with every Cat A game ticket (How much would it cost for Greene King to do that), better use of retail outlets and better use of after match facilities, bars showing 5pm match as example. Bottom line is if 1/10 attendees either arrived earlier or stayed later the club would have more customers than any entertainment complex in Ipswich by quite some margin - clearly this brings additional revenue, some of which can be re-invested in improving things further so whole thing becomes self perpetuating. 17,000 attendees every match is position a lot of businesses would envy and more could and should be done to enhance their experience to increase wallet share of money that's being spent elsewhere currently.

what a complete load of bullocks by Town. Do they think the fans are thick?

Its patently obvious this is about creaming every last penny from the Club's loyal fans.

Yet another kick in the teeth for us from a Club that shows little respect year on year for an ever dwindling fan base. Little wonder therefore that ST sales continue to decline.

It's a perfectly reasonable policy. You wouldn't wander into a cinema, theatre or music venue with hot food bought on the street, why would a football stadium be any different? As per the last paragraph, this falls in line with most other sports venues. Eat before you get to the ground or buy inside, it's quite simple.

Yes, the club is protecting a revenue stream and reducing clean-up costs, so what? Regarding litter, I can quite believe it takes 32 hours to clean up. Look at Portman Road when leaving a game. People seem to think it's acceptable to treat the place as a waste disposal site. Disgusting.

Spot on Tarrico Fan, when I left the ground Saturday I came across a massive KFC Box along with smaller KFC boxes, firstly I'm not sure how these got into the ground with this new policy, secondly why can't these people consuming these put the rubbish in the bins provided on the concourse, rather than leave it for someone to clear up. I'd hate to see the state of their houses.

Regardless of the rights and wrongs of this it does look like yet another issue which could have been handled much better if someone at Portman Road had engaged their brain for five seconds!

An announcement prior to match day that this policy was going to be enforced might have helped a bit - radical idea I know but .............!!

Last time I bought food was before norwich game - waited 20 minutes to get served by someone who clearly didn't know what he was doing and tried to charge me £6 more than I was due. I'd be more inclined to buy if the food and service was of a decent quality. Any way what about the bags containing the paper and goodies - surely these should be banned as well?

If the food inside the venue was sensibly priced then fine - and also if the queues were not half as long as they are then fine. Neither meet the criteria so to me it's nothing more than forcing fans to eat over priced food with a shabby service when getting it. Very poor.

32 hours to clear up after................what's that got to do with Hot Food?. Whatever next, ban crisps and chocolate or do they not contribute to the litter?.

if they are protecting revenue streams surely the first thing they should do is put more staff on so they can sell more stock?? The amount of people that simply give up queuing at half time is Ridiculous and seems to be getting worse. They have also run out of beer a number of times. The club is a total joke of a business but for some reason it is tolerated.

They do have fans by the short and curlies - standard FA template conditions for purchasing match tickets include the following, so I would be surprised if ITFC will deviate from these :-

"You shall not bring or attempt to bring into the Ground any of the following: (i) bottled or canned food or beverages; (ii) any other foodstuffs; (iii) any alcoholic beverage whatsoever. Refreshment facilities will be made available inside the ground."

This is more down to the greed of the game overall than down to ITFC as individual club.

On the subject of litter, anybody who throws this down is a "lout" in my opinion and should be tackled in an appropriate way rather than be confused with the irrelevance of where the litter came from.

I don't see the issue, I often see people around me leave their litter under their seat and I think it's disgusting.

I don't see why our club should pay to clear up the mess, paying £5k a year just to clear up litter seems like an enormous waste of money to me, not to mention the cost of waste disposal.

Sort yourselves out. If everyone took their litter home there wouldn't have been an issue in the first place. If you love your club, look after the f*****g thing. If you're guilty of dumping your stuff, then you're probably the ones moaning and who have ruined it for everyone.

And of course it's about protecting revenue, it's a business! When will people wake up?

What a joke. I don't buy from the vans outside, but occasionally have a pie from inside. I think they are clutching at straws with the reasoning. The bigger picture here is that town want more fans through the gates. A) Why would you try and pi55 off good customers (the main product is football) B) Why would you deter people who may have to scrap for ticket money, and take their own sandwiches thermos etc. I really think this club can be small minded at times...but I can't help but love it!
