Colchester Keen to Extend Hewitt Loan
Wednesday, 29th Oct 2014 16:38

Colchester United boss Tony Humes says he plans to speak to Town this week regarding the extension of right-back Elliott Hewitt’s loan. The 20-year-old’s current spell is up after Saturday’s home game with Port Vale.

“We’re pleased with Elliott and we’ll have a discussion with Ipswich.” Humes told the Colchester Gazette.

“We’ll see if we can further his loan, if Ipswich are happy with that. It depends on their situation and whether they have injuries.”

The Wales U21 international, who is out of contract at the end of the season, has made five appearances for the U’s and Humes says the move has benefited all parties: “Elliott has been playing first-team football for us whereas he wasn’t really figuring in Ipswich’s 18 that much.

“We’ve known him for two or three years through the academy system and we’ve always liked him as a player.

“He fits how we try and play the game and it’s an opportunity for him to get some first-team football.

“It benefits Ipswich but it also benefits us. I think it’s something that we can take forward, depending on Ipswich and what decision they make. If we can extend it, we’ll be looking into doing that.”

Speaking earlier this month, Town boss Mick McCarthy indicated that he would be happy to allow Hewitt to remain with Colchester.

Let him stay and play football, but with a 24hr recall if there is a problem with our 1st choice full backs, either injury or suspension.

I agree Cloddyseedbed, we must have the 24 hour recall as we function much better with proper fullbacks.EH should go straight into the team if Parr or Mings unavailable.

Still think we have issues at the back. With just one injury or suspension we are in a position where we can't even put another senior defender on the bench. Agree Hewitt needs games, but we need cover. 24 hr recall may be a good option all round.

In games like the one against Huddersfield where Mings was missing that i think we would have done better if we had carried on with the team playing the same system (two attacking full backs providing the width). Meaning that instead of moving Chambers over to the right i would have like to see Hewitt used for the game and simply move Parr over to the left. If we want the players to get used to playing the system then it has to be implicated for every game. Hewitt is someone i would have liked us to have on the bench for most of our games because he could just as easily come on as a winger to provide a pace injection as well as being the defensive cover.

Have to agree truth hurts. We need to get Elliot signed up. It would be a very bad thing if we lost him.
I really like what MM and TC have done with the squad. They've got rid of all the dead wood and doubled up on most positions.

By the way, did Frank Nouble leave or is he on loan? Just wondered, because he did rather well for Coventry last weekend.

Stop dithering and give him a new deal..has huge potential & great tenacity, slightly surprised why Mick hasn't made more use of him...don't let him slip away.
