St Ledger Signs Short-Term Deal
Thursday, 27th Nov 2014 12:40

Ireland defender Sean St Ledger has signed a short-term one-month deal with the Blues. The 29-year-old joined Town on trial earlier in the week and featured for the U21s in Monday’s 1-0 defeat to Southampton.

Irish international St Ledger was a free agent having left Leicester at the end of last season.

St Ledger, who has been handed the Town number 24 shirt, was close to joining the Blues in January 2012 before regaining his place in the Foxes side.

Born in Solihull, he came through the ranks at Peterborough before spending time at Stevenage (loan), Preston, Middlesbrough (loan), Leicester and Millwall (loan). He has been capped by 37 times by Ireland, scoring three goals.

In the summer he spent time on trial with Huddersfield but his move broke down after Mark Robins's departure.

Now without a club so suddenly Ipswich become a club he is interested in
Needs to play very well to win fans over

Not going to complain at all. Once again McCarthy delivers solid Championship experience on an almost non-existent budget. Plenty quick to judge these players based on their recent performances than acknowledging what benefits they can bring, which is surely what Mick is doing.

Experienced centreback who isn't that old and has nearly 40 caps for Ireland. And on short term deal to prove himself. No brainer. Hope he does well.

Luffly bit of competition for our centre backs

NoCanariesAllowed, agree 100%.

Hunt and St Ledger are no lose moves by McCarthy. Easy to forget that people were complaining about Stephen Hunt signing on a 3 month contract last year, look at him now. If it doesn't work out (ala Ebanks Blake) then you haven't really lost, but if it does, like S Hunt, you've got yourself a cracking free transfer out of nothing.

Gives us some much needed cover and has a good pedigree. Some people appear to be under the misaprehension that he turned us down previously, he didn't, Leicester pulled out as he was needed again due to injuries.

Can't believe people are criticising this one! Proven solid centre back to provide great competition for the 3 solid ones we have! small wage and remember a right footed cb so if chambers were to move again ahead of parr to rb then we have a good dynamique for cb.

How long is the short term deal? Until Jan, or the end of the season?

Quite happy to have experienced back up. Hope he does well enough to prove to be another inspired signing from Mick!

CarrotBlue - He probably never joined us before because we were a joke, managed by a clown and couldn't agree personal terms back in the Simon Clegg era.

Good cover. Good decision. We will get injuries and you never know when they're going to happen. Jury is out on Hunt Mk. 2, but this could well work out too.

I,m glad that most people approve 6- 8 weeks to prove he's still got it just remember he was an extremely competent c/b 29 if he's fit you've got a good player assume he,ll sign till end of season if ok,Collison will probably be gone then poor old Stewart ( let's hope he gets over his sicknote very quickly)

Town agreed a deal with Leicester when PJ was in charge but they pulled out due to injuries to other defenders at the time. St Ledger didn't turn Town down.

Good player. Great cover if we get injuries over the next few weeks. Sensible signing imo.

Best of luck Sean.

Lets hope we can get him match fit over next few weeks and have him ready (assuming his contract is extended) for the busy Christmas period. If he proves his fitness Im sure we will keep him till end of season

Desperately need defensive cover, with just five senior defenders at the club. That's still a big worry, because if two are out then we don't have sufficient to field a team of four. Therefore this signing is sensible, although his lack of match fitness is clearly an issue
