Town Again Linked With Towell
Wednesday, 3rd Dec 2014 09:38

Town are again being linked with Dundalk midfielder Richie Towell, who boss Mick McCarthy and his assistant Terry Connor watched in action during the the club’s pre-season trip to Ireland.

According to the Irish Independent, the Blues and Millwall could offer the out-of-contract 23-year-old a trial, Towell having already had a reportedly unsuccessful week at Cardiff.

Some reports yesterday claimed Towell was close to signing for Blackpool, their manager Lee Clark previously having shown interest during his time in charge at Birmingham.

The Town bosses watched Towell and Dundalk defeat Luxembourg’s Jeunesse Esch 3-1 at home in the second leg of their Europa League second qualifying round tie in July.

Dubliner Towell played youth football with Crumlin United before joining Celtic in 2006 when only 15.

Having made one sub appearance for the Bhoys and spent two spells on loan with Hibernian, he returned to Ireland and joined Dundalk ahead of the 2013 Irish season.

During a highly successful first season with the Lilywhites Towell won the PFAI Young Player of the Year, was in the PFAI Premier Division Team of the Year and was Dundalk’s Player and Young Player of the Year.

He scored seven league goals in 31 appearances during that 2013 campaign with the Irish season running through the summer.

Towell netted 11 league goals as Dundalk carried off the 2014 Airtricity Premier League title and was amongst six of their players named in the PFAI Premier Division Team of the Year and was a nominee for the Player of the Year gong.

Barnsley, Charlton and Brentford have all previously been linked with the former Ireland U17, U19 and U21 international.

Meanwhile, Town boss McCarthy is likely to be amongst the nominees for the November Manager of the Month award which are announced on Thursday morning.

The Blues picked up 13 points from 15 during the month, however, Brentford boss Mark Warburton looks to be the favourite to carry off the award - which McCarthy won in September - his side having picked up a maximum 15. The winner is announced on Friday.

Clint - Are you being thick on purpose? A guy has one bad trial at another club and suddenly he's a bad player? Do you think Leeds rate Noel Hunt? Do think before speaking please.

Hadn't seen the reports from yesterday re Blackpool, so will harden up that aspect of the story, although can't see anything which says he's actually signed.

Agree with Ipswich74. He's a smashing young player. If we're looking for a bit of midfield creativity, and we need it for free - he's our man.

Here he is breaking Bohs hearts last season.

Sounds promising. If we can pick him up on a free then what's to lose?

Good player, I would certainly consider him capable of challenging for a place in the team.
We can see with an injury /suspension that we are light on midfield players. He would add more depth to the squad and add more goals from midfield.

Sign him, let TC and his crew work their wonders on him, and it can only be a good thing. Welcome to our great club Mr R Towell.

Our club certainly seems to have Ireland well covered or should I say the South of Ireland (Eire).
Our Irish supporters certainly seem to rate him as well as Mick;so that is good enough for me!
Hope we have the other countries of the British Isles covered as well as the near continent.

If it were not for Mark Warburton, Brentford would be toast in this division.

Defo worth a gamble for free in my opinion. All the league of Ireland fans
seem to agree.

Look a but jaded towards the end of a long season. So the little break he's had will do him the world of good. Wouldn't imagine he would be looking for much in wages either.

Sign him up mick
