Town Draw Southampton in FA Cup
Monday, 8th Dec 2014 19:17

Town have drawn Premier League Southampton away in the third round of the FA Cup.

The teams last met at the same stage of the competition back in Town's 1999/00 promotion season when the Saints won 1-0 at Portman Road with Dean Richards netting the goal.

More recently, they faced one another in the fourth round in 2009/10 when Wayne Thomas and Michail Antonio netted for the Saints - who are currently fourth in the top flight - and Pablo Couñago scored in the final minute for the Blues.

Previously, the Blues were at the Dell for a third round tie in 1990/91 when the home side ran out 3-2 victors.

Blues striker David McGoldrick and keeper Bartosz Bialkowski will be facing their old club, while Tyrone Mings was with their academy as a schoolboy and keeper-coach Malcolm Webster is another former St Mary's employee.

Southampton may prefer the game to be played on Sunday 4th or Monday 5th January as they are facing Arsenal in a home game on the Thursday.

This will be a great opportunity to test ourselves against a similar sized club who are going extremely well towards the top of the Premier league - just like Ipswich did in 2000/2001.
The question is does MM play his "best 11" in a genuine attempt to progress in the competition or does he "concentrate on the league" which after all would bring much needed finances to the club if we secure promotion.
Can we risk injuries etc.
Not sure I would like to have to make the decision.

Mings is sort of against his old club as well is he?

Hopefully we can get used to keeping that company! Great tie - Premier League club, maybe a weakened team.. winnable.

Great draw. Lose gracefully and bow out to concentrate on the only thing that really matters

Didn't we play them in FA cup in 2010

Didn't they beat us in the cup 2-1 at their place a few seasons back?

We have a different trophy with our name on it

Good draw. No one expects us to win so its win win for us. Great for momentum if we do them but hardly deflating if we don't. A game ripe for tv too. COYB!

Yes we had a good day out about 4 years ago at Southampton in the 3rd round, lost, but good day. Out first round and win the Championship is OK by me. Don't forget we beat Villa in first round in 1981, and lost the league by playing too many games.

It was 4th round 2010 lost 2-1 when they were in league 1

I was there when we smashed Saints 7-0 at PR - still got their autographs including Terry Paine, Englands winger. Late '60s. Great draw this one. Lets go for it Mick, dont fanny about and play a weak team

Good tie, can't see us playing a full strength team due to the christmas fixtures, but obviously they won't either so could be an interesting game. COYB

Not sure how I feel about this draw....do we go for a win with a full strength XI or do we put out a mixture of reserves and use the excuse "we want to concentrate on the league"

I'll save my money and stay in Norway. Boring ground without soul. Hopeful that we can get a result, as the FA cup means the world to me. Will be interesting to see the lineup, we know Mick rotates whenever cup games come up.

Pfft, well disappointed with this one. Worst of both worlds: unglamorous, Premier League club in a boring, flat pack stadium who are actually really good and will more than likely tuck us. I was really hoping for one of the non league sides - Dover Athletic away or something like that would've been awesome! Ramshackle little ground with terracing, that's the FA cup right there...

I'll still go though as i'll be thoroughly fed up with my family by that point...

Went to this exact fixture in 1991...we lost 3-2 to Shearer and Le Tissier goals. I remember there being a great atmosphere in the Ipswich end, even without a roof. I think I'll concentrate on the league this time, though.

a ramshackle ground that no-one would be able to attend!

The 7 - 0 can't have been late '60s because Alan Brazil starred in the win.

I remember overtaking the Southampton team coach on the A12 and thinking it's a long journey to Hants when you've just been thrashed.

oh well,at least that means we can concentrate on the league. It all depends what team MM puts out or just as important the team which Southampton put out.
