Collison Set to Move On
Monday, 8th Dec 2014 21:54

Town boss Mick McCarthy says midfielder Jack Collison won’t be staying with the Blues beyond the end of his current short-term deal which is up later this month.

The 26-year-old former West Ham man joined Town in September following a trial but hasn’t made a full appearance having suffered various injuries.

The Wales international is currently sidelined with a knee problem which he picked up playing for the U21s last month.

“Jack’s injured, Jack won’t be staying, sadly he’s got an injury,” McCarthy confirmed at this evening’s PLC AGM.

The Blues manager wouldn’t be drawn on the future of any of his other short-term signings or loanees, although said Darren Ambrose, Sean St Ledger and Noel Hunt are all keen to extend their spells.

Asked about the prospect of Tyrone Mings and David McGoldrick staying beyond the January transfer window, he said there are no guarantees except that they’re both on lengthy contracts and that Marcus Evans was prepared to turn £7.5 million from Leicester down for McGoldrick in the summer.

Questioned about possible additions to his squad in January, he says he’s delighted with the players he’s got and isn’t looking to replace any of them, pointing out that Town would have to spend a lot of money to improve on them.

However, he added that he would be keen to sign Jonny Williams on loan from Crystal Palace for a third time should he be available. The Wales U21 international is currently injured with his current loan spell up at the end of the month.

The Town boss cited Derby, Middlesbrough and Bournemouth as the amongst the better teams in the division, also giving a mention to fellow dark horses Brentford and feeling that the likes of Cardiff and Fulham could still make a challenge.

McCarthy said he’s pleased to draw Southampton, who are currently fourth in the Premier League, in the FA Cup third round: “I think it’s a great draw for us, I would have loved it to have been at home.

"Believe me, I didn’t want Accrington Stanley. Who? Exactly!" he joked. "I didn’t want one of those teams, I’d prefer to test ourselves [against a Premier League side like Southampton].”

Asked whether he would field his strongest team, he added: “We haven’t got a game in the following week and I would have thought that the lads would want to play.

“I’ll see what we’ve got. We’ve got a squad of 21 operating at the minute and we’ll see who’s fit, who’s ready and we’ll go and take them on.”

Meanwhile, Town's U21s are in action against Brentford at Playford Road on Tuesday afternoon (KO 1pm).

A shame for Jack, but not a total surprise given his injury situation and the fact we have so many good options in midfield.

Good player Collison and a good age. Premier League and international experience so he's not to be sniffed at, just a shame he can't get himself fit. Well worth a look but a shame it hasn't worked out. If he can get himself fit he can still go on and get his career back on track.

Naughty.

Dont think its a case of getting himself fit. His knee is structurally shot away. I doubt he'll play football at a professional level again. Very sad, but thats why WHU released such a talent.

Heard the lad on Talksport recently ,and he was looking to go into sports media work, suggesting his injury situation couldn't continue. Real shame, but I'm sure he'll find a place somewhere in media, I mean if the Dark Lord can do it, I'm sure he can, come to think of it..... maybe I should give it a crack!

MM was referring to the old ad, not being deliberately dismissive. Have made it clearer.

Real pity about Jack. I wish him well for the future.

No late challenge from Norwich then, hey Mick.

SB1984 I think he means a we don't have a week match. ie. we've got a week to recover.

Still can't are MM playing our strongest available side, especially if we're still in the top two come January. What's the point in risking injuries to some of our essential players in a cup we have no intention of winning? Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see town go all the way but if I had a choice between a better chance of getting promoted or a lengthy cup run, I know which one I'd pick.

Each to they're own though, who knows what might happen!!

I loved how he mentioned that Cardiff and Fulham could still make a challenge, but not Norwich. :)

Best of luck Jack in your future career. Always sad to hear of a career ending early due to injury.
I remember Gerard Nash (Town Coach) had a horrific injury very early on in his Town career. In fairness to the club they supported him and helped get his coaching badges and make a career for himself.

I hope Jack can go on and have a successful career in what ever he chooses.

Phil, I know the ad!

Lower league sides are sometimes the biggest tests though you could argue.

Gutted to see jack leave,a really talented player, but has suffered with injuries throughout all of his career. Good luck to him in the future, whatever it may hold.

Shame really, always had potential to be a great player but never got to fulfil it. Still, in Mick we trust! #COYB

I see Freddy Sears is out of contract in the summer,12 goals from midfield for Colchester this season, about the same as Dids got for Coventry before Mick swooped! Still only 25 and has played in the Prem and forEng under 21.

A very good draw, I agree with Mick however, it would have been better at home , the trouble with facing much lower division teams is that they try so hard and that can result in injuries to our players sometimes when they challenge recklessly, which nobody wants.

He has the same problem as Ledley King can't train between games - fluid on the knee. Hope the career isnt over but reckon it may be.

A shame for Collinson, but this is a good decision. We can't carry injured players. Hopefully those wages can be better utilised elsewhere.

Such a shame. With his age and experience I thought that this would be a fantastic acquisition by Town. It looks like his injury is such that we cannot take the gamble.

I hope for Jack's sake that we got it wrong and he can recover and rekindle his footballing career. Whatever the outcome I wish him the best at what must be a difficult time for him.

Jack was a decent player, so it made sense to have a look at him on a short term basis. However, the injury seems to be terminal for his professional career; we need players on the pitch, not the treatment table!
