Kenny Set to Join Town
Saturday, 17th Jan 2015 22:21

Former Leeds, Sheffield United and Ireland keeper Paddy Kenny is set to join the Blues on loan from Bolton Wanderers, TWTD understands.

Earlier this evening manager Mick McCarthy confirmed that a deal had been agreed regarding a new keeper to come in as cover while Dean Gerken is out with a hip injury which is expected to sideline him for around a month.

Halifax-born Kenny, 36, started his career with Bradford Park Avenue, moving on to Bury and Whitby Town (loan) before he joined the Blades, initially on loan in 2002.

After eight years at Bramall Lane Kenny joined QPR and Leeds before joining Bolton, for whom he is yet to make an appearance, last summer.

In November the seven-times-capped Republic of Ireland international joined Oldham on loan, where he made four starts in a spell which ended earlier this month.

Meanwhile, we understand Balint Bajner’s switch to League One Notts County, which could be a permanent move rather than a loan, is set to be confirmed early next week.

Hopefully won't need to get a game. Bajner's move being permanent might be what's holding up the Sharp deal?

Why? Always thought Kenny was a nasty piece of work and we have a young promising goalkeeper looking to break through.

Surely this is the perfect opportunity for Crowe to make his mark. Crikey..do we really need a 36 year old on loan when we could use this as an opportunity to blood a promising young home-grown keeper. Won't do much for his confidence and we are supposed to be pushing our younger players to make the first team in order as well to achieve Grade One Academy status.

Haven't got any quarms about this, as long as Kenny has got himself fit again after piling on loads of (extra) weight at the end of his Leeds spell.

A decent, experienced keeper. Yes, he's been on the receiving end of a bit of stick against us, but he always seemed to take it in reasonable spirit?

Adequate cover on a loan basis.

I have never liked Paddy Kenny, but to be fair that is probably because he was being an annoy so and so for the other team, I never doubted his ability as a keeper. I would prefer to see an academy product as the back up keeper, but I've never seen Crowe play.
I think I do an ok job as Ipswich coach from the stands (when I can) and remotely over the internet, but McCarthy is an all round manager and I still don't think I'm quite ready to make these kinds of decisions and I'll leave it to Mick to make these calls...

I think people should calm down a little. He is back up for month, nothing more. He is an experienced championship keeper and we need one whilst gerken is injured.

And look at Mick's record of his signings here, speaks for itself.

-Garv & Oldgold: Just how promising is Crowe? How close to being ready for first team action is he & at what Divisional level? He hasn't even been sent out on loan to a Division 2 side yet to determine that. I sure as hell don't know. Maybe you have seen him play in a few games, but even then that's at a level where the opposing strikers are like Bajner & McQueen.
Are you really ready to risk our best chance of promotion for 10 years on a young keeper who has been described as "promising", when a hugely experienced option is available at little cost on a short term basis?
For quite some time a lot of people were calling on Jack Marriott to be included in a similar way, but MM didn't feel that he was ready for Championship football despite lots of experts saying he was promising, had potential etc. There was outrage when a journeyman striker such as Noel Hunt was brought in as it was going to prevent Marriott from getting his chance with us. I would suggest that we probably have 4 points more now than we would have had (2 wins rather than draws) without having signed him. Of course we'll never know what would have happened if Marriott had played instead, but 4 points makes a big difference in this league & come the end of the season could be all that separates 2nd & 7th.

Experienced keeper yes but MM has just spent 2 seasons getting rid of trouble makers (bad eggs) within the squad then willingly brings another one in. Lets just hope this doesnt disrupt the team spirit. COYB

There was a mention of Al-Habsi, but he's away at the African Cup Of Nations anyway for the next few weeks.

Hahaha the amount of stick we've given him over the years! Can't believe everyone moaning though. Experienced back up keeper who hopefully won't even be needed.

The sensible option - can't risk a promotion opportunity for emotional reasons. He's always done pretty well and got under our skin when he's played against us, which probably is why we find him annoying! Goalkeepers are not only prone to injuries, but may also be sent off at any time, so we need experienced cover. Let the lad Crowe get some League experience on loan before risking our chance of Premiership football on him.

Just to throw in a curve ball, is it the case that Kenny might ultimately be competition to Gerken on a longer-term basis? I'm still not convinced by our Gerks, and I like to see a keeper who is prepared to come off his line on occasions (although not as much as the Millwall keeper does!). Kenny fits the profile of a number two to BB better in my view.

Can't see why so many people are getting their knickers in a twist over this. Its not like he has just signed a three year deal and going straight in as a number one keeper.
McCarthy wants an experianced keeper as backup whilst Gerken is out. Paddy Kenny has been there, done that, got the t-shirt. Seems sensible enough to me. Have a bit of faith in MM people. If a lot of the posters on this board were in charge of transfers we would never have signed Noel Hunt for starters.

Feel sorry for Crowe..not much point in him being here if he can't even be trusted with being 3rd choice.

MCCarthy knows best....not you moaners, I think we have established that fact, many months ago. If still not convinced please check Mick's recruitments, in and out policy, and lastly league table!
This player is cover in case of an emergency, Crowe is obviously not up to the job, at present. What's wrong with the manager protecting a young lads future if this is not the right time for him? If it happens, welcome Paddy.

Sorry, I said Al-Habsi was away on ACON duty for the next few weeks. My bad - he's actually away at the Asia Cup thingy. Either way, he wouldn't be avaialble to play for a couple of weeks, which would defeat the object. :-)

Sensible choice. Good keeper at this level just what is needed. In Mick we trust. COYB's

Crowe has great potential but is not ready for first team football in the Championship. This would destroy his confidence. We should trust MM who is involving him in the first team squad which will boost his confidence. Likely that he will go out on loan once cover is in place.

Not a good keeper, but will only warm the bench

Guys. He's going to be here as cover. For someone who probably won't play i don't think we could have wished for someone with more experience of promotions just to have around the team.

Arthur added 12:59 - Jan 18
He is only in for cover.

This is an important season for us. Lack of experience at the at key moments could cost us massively. I would want someone who would come in and command his area if required.

This guy seems a realistic and cost effective short term solution.
