Move For Irish Winger in Doubt
Tuesday, 27th Jan 2015 09:34

Town’s move for young Shelbourne winger Dylan Connolly is in doubt, according to a report in Ireland.

The Blues were previously reported to be ready to offer the out-of-contract 19-year-old an 18-month contract during this transfer window but, according to the Irish Herald, issues relating to the training compensation due to Home Farm and Bohemians, where Connolly played prior to his time with Shelbourne, are currently preventing the move from going through.

Under FIFA rules when a young player moves between national associations compensation is due to all the clubs who have trained him between the ages of 12 and 21.

Connolly was one of three Shels players who spent time on trial with Town in the summer, featuring in the pre-season friendly at Braintree, along with defender Ryan Robinson and midfielder Adam McDonnell, 17, who joined the Blues in August.

McDonnell is still to play a competitive game for the Blues at any level as he is yet to receive international clearance. A number of young players at other clubs also find themselves in the same position with FIFA having recently tightened the rules relating to youngsters moving abroad.

Irish U21 international Connolly was a regular for Shelbourne’s first team as they finished second in the Airtricity League First Division (second tier) during the 2014 season, making 27 appearances and top scoring for the Dublin side with 12 goals.

He was named in the PFAI First Division Team of the Year and nominated for the PFAI Young Player of the Year award.

With the Town move having hit a stumbling block, Drogheda United and other League of Ireland sides are said to be keen on adding Connolly to their ranks ahead of their new season.

Meanwhile, The Sun is again linking Tyrone Mings with a £4 million switch to Newcastle.

Quizzed on claims of Magpies interest in Mings last week manager Mick McCarthy said the Blues had received no approaches and reiterated that no one would be sold in January: “We’re not getting shot of any of our players. We want to be in the mix for promotion at the end of the season.”

The Blues, who turned down a £3.5 million offer for the left-back from Crystal Palace in the summer, are understood to value Mings at more than £10 million.

This seems to explain why it took so long.

Who was the lad we had these issues with from france? He was then dumped by us having spent almost less time at the club than it took to get clearance. It seems ridiculous that whatever the rules its not straight forward. Another sign of how poor FIFA are at administering the game.

That French player was Cheick Kourouma. Took ages to get him cleared to play after issues with paying his previous clubs and then, as you said Monkey_Blue, he was then released (or his contract mutually terminated) just a short time later. Never made an impact after all the effort. FIFA, doing their best to ruin the game again.

I can understand the logic behind wanting to protect young players under 18 being transferred from country to country.
But seems odd that we have this situation regarding two Irish when Arsenal have just brought a young seventeen year old from Poland without too much hassle.

Watched that Braintree friendly, all the Irish lads played fantastic as did Kevin Bru. Big, direct and pacey.

The situation with Adam McDonnell seems completely crazy.

Can't believe this situation. Adam Mcdonall has been with the club 6 months and still no one knows when he can play for us. Crazy really isn't the word.

Must be really frustrating for Mcdonnell. He's at a peak time in his career and he's forced to watch every performance from the bench.

FIFA's rules have got far too many holes in them. Realistically, any club coming in for Connolly has to be able to pay off every club he's been with since he was 12. So, rich clubs once again benefit from the ruling. If you've got the money, you can bring in the most promising players.

Daft ruling. Not thought out at all. Even if the lad wanted to play for the likes of Bradford/ AFC Wimbledon etc they wouldn't take him on board because he costs too much.

Surely this will also encourage academies to get in as many players as possible (quantity not quality) so you can say "Billy So-and-So was here from the age of 13-14 so time to pay up!". These rules are nothing short of insane.

Really sorry for young players who suffer because of them (McDonnell etc).

Fifa are excellent at 'regulating' some aspects (ie players moving between countries to progress their careers) but absolutley fine on other things (Millions of pounds being transferred from one countries delagations' bank account to another)
