Derby Back to Second
Tuesday, 17th Feb 2015 22:30

Town remain fourth in the Championship following this evening’s fixtures, but are now two points behind all the top three.

Derby (goal difference: 30) moved back to second after drawing 3-3 away against Rotherham, equal on 59 points with leaders Bournemouth (33) and Middlesbrough (28), who drop to third but play Birmingham in their game in hand tomorrow. The Blues (19) are on 57.

The Millers, who beat Town 2-0 10 days ago, were 3-1 in front with less than half an hour remaining with ex-Blues loanee Paul Green amongst the scorers.

But Tom Ince netted his second of the night before former Town frontman Darren Bent grabbed the equaliser with seven minutes left on the clock.

Elsewhere, Saturday’s opponents Reading lost 1-0 at home to Wigan, while Cardiff drew 1-1 with Blackburn at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Our goal difference will sadly become crucial and will not do us any favours.
Guess we'll just have to keep winning to make sure of a top two finish.

Agree ArnieM. We need to make sure we aren't in that dangerous "5th/6th/7th position" near the end of the season, as our goal diff is well below the others.

Derby's draw is a good result for us really. It's going to be a massive East Anglian Derby this year. Hopefully we will have a couple of reinforcements by then (Fanima etc) which will give us the boost we need between now and the end of the season.

Personally very excited about the prospect of Fanima. Surprised it's not caused more discussion on the forum. He was absolutely fantastic against our U21's.

Good that derby didn't win, means we will be only 2 points off automatic promotion no matter what the boro result tomorrow. Closed the gap again now need to keep up this form

We're fairly unlikely to drop out of the top six on goal difference, as only five teams have better GD than ourselves and the next best, Brentford, is on just +4. Norwich's GD is only four better than ours, well within reach if we can keep winning steadily. Apart from the top seven, Forest is the only team which has a positive GD (+1).

Phew, that's a relief, saw the headline and thought the Nodge game had moved by a day!

I said a long time ago that our inability to stuff teams like Blackpool would come back to bite us. Our relatively poor goal difference could end up being the difference between 2nd and 3rd which would be a real shame. All we can do is keep winning and hope the rest drop points against each other. Definitely don't fancy Norwich in the playoffs.

Oh Carsey give it a rest! If only we had more points we'd be higher up the league Duh! I'm sure there are Derby fans with equally incisive comments like "I told you if we didn't win against Rotherham we wouldn't go top"!

We are where we are and without being able to bring in Tom Ince and Darrent Bent (who I'm sure a few at the bottom of the Prem would love to take on). 2 points off the top, 15 cup finals comming up (8 at FPR) and I couldn't give a rats arse who we get in the playoffs, if it comes to that, because the first team everyone else in that top 6 will say "No thanks" to is Ipswich.

The difference with these teams are epitomised by their second and 3rd goals:

Tom Ince brings the deficiet back to 1, before Lingaard sets up Bent to save a point for Derby. Their 3 January signings will be crucial to them going up.

Well the two sides looking in best position are Derby and watford. Derby only have two games (both at home) while Watford have 3 at home!
There's going to be 2/3 sides making late runs so who they play may be an issue too! And of course the bottom sides will be getting points that aren't expected

Derby result last night proves, with Blackpool a possible exception, no games are a 'given 3 points'.
All teams ebb and flow with form, and it's about trying to find as much consistently over a marathon. That's why there's no reason to over react when we do lose games, for instance Rotherham, although I do understand many on the forum focus upon the 90 mins that has just unfolded, and concentrate on team selection etc.
Obviously investment in strengthening squads has already started to be pay dividends for teams such as Derby, we, for whatever reasons haven't heavily recruited, but still continue to contend, much, I guess contributed to team spirit.
Personally believe a top six finish is assured, please note Brentford shooting themselves in the foot, but also believe McCarthy and boy's firmly have sights on automatic spot, and why shouldn't they....2pts of top!
Next game a potential banana skin, let's hope all stay concentrated and don't look too far ahead, something Bournemouth may just of done recently.

Goal difference could be crucial at the end of the season & it's unlikely we will get on par with the teams above us. Not enough goals from midfield obviously, never killing the opposition & when we've been in a winning position sitting back & trying to contain the opposition rather than trying to get a hat full of goals. Can't rely solely on Murphy, without him we would be mid table at best. Can't TC spend every day with Tabb, Anderson, Skuse and the others teaching them to shoot.

Anybody know latest on Dids and Hyam?

I believe it is the top two or nothing in reality which is why reinforcements vital before loan window closes (when is that?).

We do not want Nodge to have incentive of having to beat us to above us next week----it is in our hands though so come on boys, 2 very winnable home games coming up if selections and atitude right.

The difference between us finishing where we do this season (and the last few) could come down to our lack of goals from midfield (again)..when oh when are we going to get someone in who can chip in with 8-12 goals from the middle?

Needs sorting next season no matter which division we're in.

carsey added 10:48 - Feb 18
Fat_Boy_Tim I don't disagree with your "we are where we are" comment but you can't dispute the fact that goals or the lack of them from the midfield could very well end up costing us promotion, automatic or via the playoffs.
Just because someone says something you don't agree with is no reason to tell them to shut up which I take it is what you mean by "Oh Carsey give it a rest!". It's an opinion.

All we can do is keep winning and hope others around us slip. If it comes to GD well so be it, lets hope not. I think the question is how many points is needed for top 2, with 15 games left there are a possible 45 up for grabs so quite conciveable 90 points plus could be needed to get that top 2 so where migh they come from, now as you know I dont read to much into where the opposition are or form because as we know football is just not like that but looking at what remains

Reading - 3 pts
Brum- 1 pt
Scum- 0 pts (Sorry but I grew up in Nodge and as such am ever the pessimist when we play them)
Leeds- 1 pt
Brentford- 3pts
Boro- 0 pts
Bloton 3 pts
Watford 1 pt
Cherries 1pt
Hudds 3 pts
Blackpool 3pts
Cardiff 1 pt
Wolves 1 pt
Forrest 3 pts
Blackburn 1 pt

Based purely on gut feeling and pessimis (because whilst I believe I dare not dream) thats 25 points which would put us on 82 which I think would leave us play off bound

Lat year that would have left us 4th (Where QPR finished). Leicester went up with 102 and Burnley with 93.

My feeling is we willmiss auto by a few points as the 3 above are all decent, Bournemouth might have a wobble, they havent had one yet and Derby are known for choking, so if we get really lucky it is doable.

Let is us hope Villa now recall bent (Please Tim), I dont know if they can, Howes lot have a nervous breakdown and Boro lose Bamford for the rest of the season!

Sure - we lost to Rotherham - but equally we beat title contenders M'bro 2-0, with ease. It's the ebb and flow of a long, unpredictable season.I've been watching us since 1976 and there were always moments like this.

Derby and Bournemouth are where they are because 1) they have good managers who play organised, attacking football that brings them goals. 2) They have the money to buy the strikers to score those goals. But even then they don't win every game - even against the weaker teams.

Where we are is nothing short of miraculous — our entire squad cost £110K (incl 100K for Sears). If you factor in that we got around 5m for Cressy, than our squad in real terms is IN PROFIT by nearly 4.9m!

So I'd much rather be hearing talk of ' will it be auto or playoffs?' than 'can we stay up' or even 'mid-table mediocrity. Whatever happens we've had an amazing season on no money.

Thing is Walberwicks, I've never looked at one of your team's forums before, I don't know who the Norwich players are, I have no idea who your lot want to sign or who they need to sign or are rumoured to, I can't remember the name of your manager or the one before. Basically that is because I'm an Ipswich Town supporter and I have no interest in your team whatsoever except when we have to play you and i'll get that news from here.

So why are you so interested in us? Not a true Norwich supporter? Just listen to the radio and ask for a yellow scarf for Christmas? Why so fascinated?

I think last night demonstrated the difference between us and Derby. Both clubs were two down at Rotherham. We had nothing to give and limited options, Derby had their ambitious January signings. None of that emergency loan rubbish from them but good half season loan deals ensuring availability from January for the rest of the season. I still believe our lack of January activity in comparison to our competitors will prove to be our downfall. Hope I am very wrong. Sadly, if we signed a loanee now, they would miss a potential play off final. That's the clubs dilemma and yet more evidence as to why such deals should have been done in January.

The table is looking tight again. 2 weeks ago all the doom and gloom mongers where on here saying mick missed his chance to sign players and we would be lucky to make the playoffs. Even if we dont go up I will still follow the club. I love ipswich town.

I would add the Bournemouth have not added anyone in Jan nor to my knowledge during the current loan window as yet and that Bent is costing Derby in the region of 30-40k per week, that would cause some utter disharmoney in the dressing room
