Police Praise for Fans
Sunday, 1st Mar 2015 21:17

Police have praised fans for showing a “good spirit” at today’s East Anglian derby at Carrow Road. Only four arrests were made before and during the game, while 14 Town supporters were given direction to leave notices by British Transport Police at Norwich railway station before the game.

Matchday policing commander Chief Superintendent Nick Davison said: "Overall there was good spirit between both sets of fans resulting in minimal disorder.

"The policing operation was firm in places and these tactics were used to ensure supporters enjoyed the game and journeys to and from the stadium in a safe environment.

"Fourteen away fans were given direction to leave notices at Norwich train station as a result of their behaviour; enough to cause concern to officers who took this reactive measure in a bid to prevent disorder.

“These supporters had been spoken to by police during their journey from Ipswich and were fully aware of the standards of behaviour expected but sadly their conduct fell short of this resulting in police taking action.

"Additional road closures were put in place to ensure the safety of those attending before and after the match and I would like to thank motorists for their co-operation during this time.”

Two of the arrests were for breaching direction to leave notices, one man was detained for causing criminal damage at the ground, while the fourth person was arrested for being drunk and disorderly.

I ve been a Town fan for 40 years. I get to about 20 games a season, that includes 4 or 5 away games. I travel by car and train. Sometimes on my own, sometime with friends sometimes with my daughter and my 6yo grandson. During that time I ve visited 44 away grounds. Yesterday was my first visit to Carrow Rd. Do I go to the same games as the people that post adverse comments on here? I ve never had cause to complain about stewards or policing/police constables at any of the games ive been to, in fact I found on the two occasions I spoke to a police officer and a steward yesterday I found them to be both courteous and informative.
Could it be the way I conduct myself when Im proudly representing my club.
Could it be that when I go to a game I don't shout and swear on the train in a way that annoys other travellers whilst swigging alcohol.
Could it be that I treat all people, whoever they support with the courtesy and dignity that I expect to be treated with.
Could it be that trouble will always find trouble for those looking for it.
Makes you wonder don't it.
For the record Im as passionate about Town as I always have been. I sing. I shout. I chant.
I know how to conduct myself with dignity and pride.

I was in Norwich for my stag do- we Hired a boat and parked about 40yards from the ground. We were barred from entering all bars at 10am to get breakfast after police in the door checked our id and as I live in colchester and my best man was from bury st Edmunds. Literally only those with at least 17 fingers on each hand were allowed in.

Bizarrely I did watch the whole game from the Geoff watling stand surrounded by yokels dressed as clowns....policing of the whole place was odd!

Some points

If you are told your behavior is inappropriate, but can not change that behavior when you know you are being watched, even for the 40 minutes the journey takes, then you deserve to be sent home again
A lot of the Police on duty would have been from Suffolk, and logic would suggest they were heavily involved with the policing of the supporters from Suffolk.
When Norwich come to Town, do you want them drinking in your local pub, in colours, singing songs etc? Or would you rather they were kept at a distance? It works both ways. (yes, most of them are OK, but like us, they have an "element"
Perhaps we can do away with Police next time, and return to the smashed pub windows and running fights in the street?
It's the Derby, it has been poiliced like this your years. If you don't have the wit to deal with it or the brains to circumnavigate it, either shut up or don't go.

Yes, I have an interest in this, but believe me, I am the Constabularies biggest critic. Biggest Derby for decades, no injuries as far as I k now, and only four arrests. Well Done and Thankyou (someone needs to say it)

I've never been to Carrow Road before (travelled up from London) and have no desire to return there. I found it a hostile place and the fans were unwelcome from the start - regardless of who you are. I found one of the stewards ott as I was going in to the stadium, so I complained when I was in there and they did have a word with her.

The long walk back to the station the worst part. Police horses galloping through largely peaceful Ipswich fans (apart from those singing). The use of the police dogs at the entrance of the station both intimidating and unnecessary. In the station saw police shoving fans onto a train. Seemed you weren't allowed to speak to anyone or ask a question without getting shoved onto a train so I kept my distance, like a lot of other fans...Saw man (not drunk) with his friend say to an officer he was being heavy handed and was immediately surrounded by about 7 officers.

The police were heavy handed. I appreciate it's a Derby day, but I think they got a bit overexcited as big events like this are quite rare up there.

Total contrast to when I went to Millwall away recently where I was expecting trouble. I recall there were more fans than at Norwich and less police were used, but it was handled a lot better. Millwall itself is not a nice place to hang around either. There were no police dogs or people being pushed around. Took a while to get back to the station but no comparison to this.

I can only speak from what I experianced and witnessed.
I went by coach and before the game I thought the police were friendly and helpful.
Both inside and outside the ground I found the stewards also to be helpful.
The atmosphere inside between supporters was hostile but having been to something like 25 derbies in Norfolk in the last 50 years it was as I would expect.
After the game the mingling of supporters could have caused huge problems IF we had won because I do not think there were enough police on the route back to the coach park if it had all exploded which I think would have been the case with an ITFC win.

Had no problem tbh.. those of you that did, were obviously with a few donuts that tend to give every club a poor name.. Wish those responsible that follow our club give themselves a good talking to

I too was at the match and any interaction I had with police or stewards was respectful & polite. Admittedly I made my own way up to Norwich & did not take the train, so i will have missed some of the shenanigans, but undoubtedly there are idiots on both sides who do their best to spoil it for everyone else.
