Williams Taking Return Day By Day
Thursday, 2nd Apr 2015 06:00

Loanee Jonny Williams, who hasn't played since being injured in action for Town five months ago, is far from a certain starter when the Blues take on Championship leaders Bournemouth at Portman Road on Good Friday.

Williams said: “I’ve been in and out of training for quite a while now, managing what I do. Full training has been the last seven to 10 days.

“It’s nice to be back in training and doing what I love best, but it’s one of them where I can’t look too far ahead at the moment. I’m just getting through each training session. It’s a case of taking it day-by-day and seeing where I am.

“I’m hoping to be as fit for as many games as I can. At the moment it’s a case of seeing how I go in training and weigh it up from there. It’s a case of the sooner the better for me, but I’ll have to be guided by the staff around me.”

Crystal Palace and Wales midfielder Williams, starting his third loan spell at Portman Road in just over a year, revealed the support he has received from this part of the world meant a great deal to him as he battled his way back to fitness.

He added: “That’s been great for me, especially after the bad times I’ve had through injury, to have that backing from the staff and fans here.

"It’s very important to have that belief and hopefully it will bring the best out of me. Hopefully I can show what that support means to me out on the field.

“It’s massive to have the opportunity to come here and play on the big stage and prove myself. The gaffer here has given me that a few times now. The chance of potentially getting another promotion on my CV is massive.”

Williams helped the Eagles to step up to the top flight two years ago when he played in the play-off semi-final victory over arch-rivals Brighton and then the final triumph at Wembley over Watford, who are very much in the promotion race again this season.

But rather than consider the possibility of sixth-placed Town winning promotion through the play-offs, Williams revealed: “Everyone is focusing on the top two. It will be silly not to given it’s so close. With the rollercoaster of the Championship, and the surprise results you get every week, you never know what’s going to happen.

“For me it’s really hard to explain what the play-offs are like. Going to Wembley to play in a game that’s worth so much money to the club and which means so much to the fans, it’s huge.

“The prospect of helping Ipswich get to that sort of match is one I’m relishing and I’m just hoping I can contribute.”
