European Home Run Again Longest Still Unbeaten Streak
Thursday, 16th Apr 2015 09:55

Town's 31-match European unbeaten record at Portman Road is once again the longest still ongoing undefeated home streak in Europe following PSG’s Champions League quarter-final first leg defeat to Barcelona last night.

The French champions equalled and then surpassed the Blues’ run earlier this season via victories over Apoel Nicosia and Ajax and a draw with Chelsea, but saw their streak end when they were beaten 3-1 at the Parc des Princes by the Catalan giants - beaten twice on Suffolk soil by Town during their run - yesterday.

The Blues' record goes back to the European Cup preliminary round tie with Maltese club Floriana in September 1962, which was won 10-0, to the 1-0 UEFA Cup second round first leg victory over Czech side Slovan Liberec in October 2002.

The stat in itself may be somewhat tenuous but it should not detract from a truly amazing feat. To remain unbeaten throughout 31 home games in Europe ranks as arguably one of the greatest achievements in English football history. To put it into some kind of context precious few teams have managed to remain unbeaten for 31 consecutive games at home in our domestic leagues. To do this over a period of 40 years against some of the best teams of their day in Europe is quite staggering and is something of which we should all be proud.

NSL, just how many towns the size of Ipswich have had a football team play 62 European cup ties let alone gone unbeaten in every single one of the home ones of those (including against Inter Milan when a second tier club)? It might not be the same as winning the Champions League but there aren't many clubs that can claim that glory either.

While I wholeheartedly agree that the unbeaten run is a record to be proud of - especially when we played the likes of Real Madrd, Barcelona and the St Etienne of Platini - but if we're talking history it should be accurate. We were still a premier league club when we beat Inter Milan in 2001 and during the European glory nights of the 70's and 80's (TWTD) I never once heard the song 'it's just like watching Brazil'. The repetitive dirge of Ipswich, Ipswich, Ipswich etc to the tune of Amazing Grace was more likely - with 25,000 failing to manage the truckers gear change high notes halfway through.
