Bishop Fined
Friday, 5th Jun 2015 17:02

Town midfielder Teddy Bishop has apologised after today being fined £3,000 for a breach of the Football Association’s betting rules. Bishop, 18, was also warned as to his future conduct after an FA disciplinary hearing that took place in London.

The player did not place any bets on Ipswich Town games but the betting rules changed at the start of last season with anyone employed within the game prohibited from placing bets on all football worldwide.

Before that it was possible for players, officials etc to bet on football as long as bets were not placed on games involving their own club or competitions in which their club were participating.

Upon hearing the verdict Bishop told the club website: “It has been a very worrying time for me and I’d like to apologise to the manager and Ipswich Town.

“I have no one to blame but myself for not being fully aware of the restrictions in betting on football. I am only young and I’m learning all the time about experiences in life and in football. This is an experience I won’t forget. It has been a massive learning curve for me.”

Town’s managing director, Ian Milne, added: “Teddy has apologised to Mick McCarthy and the Club for his actions.

“Like the rest of the playing squad and the Club staff in general, he was made aware of the guidelines regarding betting on football matches at the start of last season.

“He has accepted his punishment and we have reiterated to him the responsibilities he has as an employee of Ipswich Town Football Club but it is worth noting that the bets were all for small amounts of money and while placed under Teddy’s name, were shared amongst his friends away from the game.

“He is young and has made a mistake. He is aware of that and will certainly learn from it.”

That's about right. Raises the question howeveras to how much the club put into making it clear to such a young player (who has only just reached the legal age to bet!). Particularly bearing in mind the betting problems of a recent employee!

I hope he can still claim his winnings when Norwich get relegated!

Common sense approach. The correct action taken by the club. I'm sure Mick will have had a word ...

Thought you'd crawled back under your rock some time ago Campo. Guess we have to put up with all of your wind up posts again for a while....

I remember naming you Thrush a while back - and I recall why.

A good bet is Norwich will sack their Manager before the next season ends...
When "Lets be Aving you" Delia, realises he's no better equipped at managing them than Neil Adams was.

........ concerning that one so young has got himself involved in something like this already, it's NOT a requisite for youngsters of his age to become embroiled in - hope the lesson has been learned.

Otherwise - the slippery slope is never far ahead, if it continues even in 'small ways'.

....... grossly irresponsible for anyone to take this lightly, and just brush aside. Some no doubt will tho'.

So, the kid put a couple of quid on a bet with his mates. It doesn't seem like a huge deal to me.
Good on him for apologising though - he's towing the line and saying the right things. Next time give your mate a quid and get him to put it on for you - I hear that's how other players have got around it!

Some ridiculous comment on here not least catswiskers, how I wish our directors had the courage Delia & her board had in getting rid of Adams & appointing a young ambitious man who's record is exceptional, we're facing another season of agricultural football. The league positions showed that the 3 best teams got promoted but I don't really think we were any where near 6th best.

In that case Hegansheroes we must have finished 6th because we had(and have) a very good manager.

I have no doubt that Teddy will progress on from this. I only hope he givesbup what seems to havd been a regular betting habit. I really hope and pray its not the thin end of the wedge as far as gambling is concerned.

Bit of a pathetic fine given he is probably on £10k a week. £30,000 would have been more effective.

ArnieM added 20:08 - Jun 5
I doubt very much he is on £10k a week. More like £3k!

Heagans heros, did you read any comments on the Dumplings fan pages when Adams was sacked. Many of their fans hate the board up there regardless of their promotion

wayway added 20:15 - Jun 5
Its got to be worth a tenner bet, The Dumplings to be relegated and the manager to be out in the new year. What odds anyone

AYACCA added 20:25 - Jun 5
